Today I was on my way out with my DH when we noticed something on the pavement opposite our house. We stopped the car to take a look. We discovered a man dead on the pavement.

Such a shock ... you did all you could. X

Streaky flowers How dreadful. I have a friend who had a similar thing happen with her DH. Keep doing what you enjoy folks. You truly never know.

Eight years ago my husband went out to walk to his allotment. He collapsed and died a short distance from our house, just inside a neighbour’s driveway. I will forever be grateful to all those who tried to help and the fact that someone was there with him at the end to comfort him and hold his hand.

Nothing left to say, it has all been said, just sending my kindest thoughts to you flowers

Thanks everyone. I'm sorry that some of you or family members had similar experiences. Yes Mt61 dying in the street alone (he was on the pavement but his feet were on the road) is not what we would want for our loved ones. As some have said, I'm sure he knew nothing about it.

Goodness, how awful for you, this man and his family!

I do hope you’re ok flowers

Kate1949, it must have been a big shock to discover the poor man. Well done for assisting.
My FIL collapsed and died in the street in our city centre so I understand how the shock stays with you.

Farzanah Sat 30-Nov-24 09:38:08

What a shock, and how good that you stopped and did what you could. Good that you felt able to share here, and important to talk to others because it is a traumatising experience.

Calendargirl Sat 30-Nov-24 09:32:57

We have many defibrillators around our little town and in the neighbouring villages.

One in the community centre, but sadly didn’t save a local chap who collapsed and died there a few weeks ago.

Kate49 I am forever grateful to a kind Polish woman who rushed to help my poor son when he was set on by a nasty gang. I wish I could have found out her name and address so I could thank her.

poppysmum Sat 30-Nov-24 09:15:34

what an awful shock and how terrible for the man but hopefully it was quick so he knew nothing about it. sending love to you both

downtoearth Sat 30-Nov-24 08:54:43

Kate big hug for you, I found my friend dead in bed last year, he was 51.
It is traumatic and stays with you.
You all rallied and pulled together as a community, as ours did,
I hope you feel better today 💐

Hello Kate I am sorry for the shock you have had today. I volunteer as a community first responder with the ambulance service and I am called to situations similar to what you faced this morning. I have done cpr and helped the paramedics in various situations and some are successful, some are not. I am certain the man's family will be grateful to everyone who tried to help him.

A dreadful experience for you and your husband Kate1949. Such an experience is bound to leave you feeling very shaken. You coped admirably. Well done. I hope you managed to switch off and rest last night. Be kind to yourself 💐

I’ve been in similar tragic roadside situations twice. The worst being a little 6 year old boy who was struck by a car. I did CPR till the ambulance arrived and the paramedics took over. His parents arrived on the scene from nearby 2 minutes before the ambulance and there are no words to describe how awful it was.

I heard later that day that he didn’t survive due to a catastrophic brain injury . My own son was also 6 years old at the time and I’ve never forgotten that little boy and his parents although this is the first time I’ve spoken of it in 30 odd years.

How very sad. I hope the poor man didn’t suffer too long. His loved ones will be comforted by the compassion of strangers, including you and your husband Kate1949 Look after your selves.💐

kittylester Sat 30-Nov-24 08:09:08

Hope you got some sleep kate and a feeling OK today.

Mt61 Sat 30-Nov-24 01:04:33

You expect to die in bed not on the street. Poor chap 😞

nanna8 Sat 30-Nov-24 00:23:38

Hope you are feeling better and more settled now kate An awful experience but I suppose some good came of it because it gives you faith in your fellow man because of the support they offered..

Shelflife Fri 29-Nov-24 23:27:47

Kate , I am so sorry you have had this dreadful shock, hope you and your DH are ok. The poor man.
One consolation is as you say is 'people are wonderful ' with so much violence in our country it is refreshing to learn how compassionate people are. Do hope you recover from todays trauma very soon.

Kate1949 Fri 29-Nov-24 23:15:16

People came out of houses with blankets and someone ran to a nearby school to try to get a defibrillator. People are wonderful.

Macadia Fri 29-Nov-24 23:05:37

Kate, I am so sorry. Also sorry for the man's family. Sometimes these things happen due to criminal activities but in this case, it seems as though it might have been natural causes so even though it was traumatizing to you, it might have been a blessing to him. God rest his soul.

brook2704 Fri 29-Nov-24 22:58:15

Oh kate that’s dreadful, hope you are ok. So sad for the poor man and his family 💐

Witzend Fri 29-Nov-24 22:54:07

What a nightmare for you! You must have been so shaken.

Lilypops Fri 29-Nov-24 22:50:49

My son went out for a haircut a few years back. He was on leave from the RAF. He was gone ages I wondered why. When he eventually came home he was very upset and shaking, he had seen a man collapse and gone to help with CPR. , he did his very best but the man could not be saved ,, He was a local man and his wife managed to find out where we lived , she came round to thank my son and she said it was very comforting to know her husband had not died alone , It upset us all for days.
Everyone should know how to perform CPR. Never know when it’s needed ,

Kate1949 Fri 29-Nov-24 22:33:31

Thank you everyone. It feels like it was a dream now. How wonderful all those people were who stopped and the ones who gave CPR. The Polish (if that's what they were) lads counting out loud the chest pumps in their own language for their mate doing the pumps will stay with me for a long time.
