Since retiring if I’m home at lunchtime I used to like watching this, BUT! Am I becoming a Grumpy Old Women but have the contestants become so loud and squealers ! If I was at an auction and they were filming it would be so annoying. Your comments please

Undoubtedly BH has lots its way. It hasn't been the same since Tim Wonnecott left - at least he shushed the idiots and maintained a modicum of dignity. I think contestants are often chosen because they have a gimmick - stupid outfits and/or hats, out-of-tune am-dram singing, etc. Also, it seems they're all versed in what to say and how manically they should say (sorry, squeal) it. My personal bugbear is the first section when they have to9 act like 4-year-olds: "What do we need...?" "MONEY!!" "What else do we need ?" "EXPERTS!!!" Totally puerile. Still, it seems almost the whole of modern British culture is being infantilised now (big businesses even run courses in how to remove the buying public's sense of free will). Oooh, that opene4d the floodgates for me, didn't it? Sorry, peeps (not really).

Can't agree with you there NonGrannyMoll Bargain Hunt was improved by Wonnacott leaving. He was a patronising know it all.

BlueBelle Tue 10-Dec-24 16:23:51

I agree about Wannacot Sodapo not a pleasant man at all
It’s a nonsense programme no one would get 40/50% off an item they were buying maybe £1 at best
It’s silly can’t be bothered with it

The celebrity version is no better, with God help us! With even worse...... Love Islanders taking part with their blubbery fake lips & botox!

I've only ever watched half a programme and was planning on covering a full episode.

... I don't think I'll bother.

Are the programme makers attempting inclusivity, or hoping for a wider audience among LoveIslanders fans?

Dickens Tue 10-Dec-24 17:45:17

I don't know if it's my glasses having taken on a rosy hue, or if BBC programming has, over the decades, genuinely deteriorated somewhat.

I understand that it (BBC) needs to attract a wide audience, but some of the programmes seem to be dumbed-down to the point of mediocrity.

Not sure I can really explain but, when I watch a 'special-interest' programme, I frequently feel that I haven't learned anything because their is no depth to it. I'm not suggesting presenters should present like Mr Cholmondley-Warner with po-faces, but sometimes a little less frivolity would be appreciated.

... or maybe, I'm simply one of those GOW (Grumpy Old Women) who's hard to please...

I think if they hit on a theme, they then flog it to death (excuse the pun).
Antiques programmes, quizzes and game shows etc

Boring, boring, boring.

vivvq Tue 10-Dec-24 18:19:17

I agree. There's also the problem of the auction houses. Sometimes there is only a handful of retired people, some with their sandwiches and one lady with her knitting. If there is no internet interest the chances of making a profit are very small. I've seen quite valuable items

vivvq Tue 10-Dec-24 18:21:40

For very little. End of first post. Obviously pressed Post before I had finished.

valdavi Tue 10-Dec-24 18:27:17

Well, I like it. It's very handy to watch while I'm having lunch, I don't mind if I don't see the things go to auction, I can just get up & get on.
The experts are characters & I love seeing what teams buy & what they get it for. Lot of silver-topped perfume bottles I agree, but also some weird & wonderful stuff. I've only recently had opportunity to watch it so haven't got bored, but there must be many people like me.

georgiejg Tue 10-Dec-24 22:28:56

They are at a different venue when the actual auction is filmed. It just looks like they are there. Nothing real about the whole programme.

Lilypops Tue 10-Dec-24 22:34:55

Can’t stand Charlie Ross and his over the top enthusiasm. And “isn’t this just fun antics ”.

Farzanah Tue 10-Dec-24 22:34:56

I like watching before the news but am always amazed with the tat that is bought and sold.

Absolutely agree with this. I’ve been thinking the same for a long time. Even programmes discussing serious topics such as the Martin Lewis show is sometimes dumbed down with silliness. It gets on my nerves. There is little intelligent humour any more.

I thought it was just me, but I totally agree with others on here who are saying how ridiculous and loud this programme has become. Contestants shrieking with glee at the slightest positive, shouting at the Auctioneer and generally behaving as if their lives depended on a good result! completely purile behaviour. As for Tim Wannacot. It was imo much better with him. He was a know all, simply cause he did, Know All, and the programme was the better for it

I know this is a slight detour, but why is Catherine Southon , on Antiques Road Trip , yet again. The third week running. I dislike her .

Oh! I have to disagree agree about Catherine Southon! I think she is lovely, like a bouncy Labrador. Catherine also seems genuine unlike some of the presenters. I do have a particular dislike of
Irita Marriot! She is so often wrong with her suggestions but very insistent & bossy in her manner, plus I can't understand her accent.
Ps Bring back Tim. 🤔

I too am disappointed with Bargain Hunt. The contestants should be told to pipe down and behave - they're ridiculous in their behaviour. I think it's reached the end. And like others I too miss Doctors. It was a good series but instead we are getting rubbish - at least that's my view probably because of my old age!

Smileless2012 Wed 11-Dec-24 14:31:38

We still watch but I too find the over zealous contestants rather irritating, especially the leg kick at the end!!!

Have you been a contestant on thi programme, dogsmpther?

The important question is, if so, did you make a profit?

Allira Wed 11-Dec-24 14:37:56

Sorry, need a new dibber.

What I dislike is being shown what happens at the auction before the start ,it's not just bargain hunt what does it antique roadshow does it ,and all the shouting at auctioneer must drive them mad.

Kim19 Wed 11-Dec-24 17:53:18

Wonder at the word 'expert'. Last couple of shows I watched recently these experts made considerable losses. Seriously unimpressive. I know the market can be volatile but that's supposedly their area of expertise?

It is getting irritating by childish behaviour and silliness. The programme is backwards actually. I knew 2 antique dealers who bought at auction and then sold at market.

The tv producers want a format that is difficult, competitive and has a defined end. This is why they do it the waay they do.

We used to do a bit of antique dealing and, yes, we bought at auction and sold at fairs but when buying at auction, you might well get a competitor bidding on 20 lots loosing on 17, or even not buying anything at all because they decide the items are becoming too expensive and then when the items they buy are put up for sale, they make take months to sell, if they sell at all. That is not a very good format for a tvprogramme, too undefined with no action at the start and petering out at the end.

By getting people to buy at a fair or visit a shop, then there is a good start with activity and things to catch the viewers interest. By having them then sell at auction, the whole things comes to a distinct end with a run of tension to see what things sell for.

People forget that the purpose of these programmes is to make tv that attracts people's attention and holds it, not to do things in a way they are done in real life.

Farzanah Wed 11-Dec-24 20:03:50

If items are bought in shops, not fairs for example, the contestants can’t afford the retail price so bully the poor shop owner into vastly reducing the item merely because they are on TV. It’s not realistic to buy in shops at full or slight price reduction, because they would not make a profit at auction, so to my mind it’s dishonest.
