Since retiring if I’m home at lunchtime I used to like watching this, BUT! Am I becoming a Grumpy Old Women but have the contestants become so loud and squealers ! If I was at an auction and they were filming it would be so annoying. Your comments please

aquagran Mon 09-Dec-24 16:12:58

I agree, I think they are told to appear excited! Too much screaming.
Also have you noticed they seem to buy the same thing over and over again, for instance, pearl fruit knives, silver topped perfume bottles and cocktail shakers in the shape of a penguin.

I think they’ve changed the format and like many other shows it’s become really hyped up. I still like it though. I have to say, there are some other tv shows that to me, are ridiculous now and almost unwatchable . Maybe I’m also just getting old and grumpy!

JamesandJon33 Mon 09-Dec-24 16:39:10

I know this is a slight detour, but why is Catherine Southon , on Antiques Road Trip , yet again. The third week running. I dislike her .

ginny Mon 09-Dec-24 17:11:52

I do agree about the over excitement . However what really annoys me is the percentage that the contestants get taken off. Most of them would not make any money if they were charged as most people would be.

Skydancer Mon 09-Dec-24 17:24:43

It is getting irritating by childish behaviour and silliness. The programme is backwards actually. I knew 2 antique dealers who bought at auction and then sold at market.

aquagran Mon 09-Dec-24 17:32:48

Also, the experts describe so many things as “such fun”. They must lead very dull lives! I am grumpy!

Cabbie21 Mon 09-Dec-24 17:49:41

I fail to understand this new meaning of “fun” too.
So little of the programme is devoted to looking at actual items. I am tired of the opening bits eg What do our competitors want in their expert?, and the formulaic structure and phrases of the show.
As for asking “ Do you like it? “ what does that matter? You are not buying it to keep, is what I shout at the screen. I still keep watching though.

Skydancer Mon 09-Dec-24 17:55:20

Same here, Cabbie21. But I still watch it. I hate it when the contestants shout and jump about at the auction. If I was the auctioneer I’d tell them to be quiet.

Allira Mon 09-Dec-24 18:09:25

Does anyone ever make a profit?

Hildagard Mon 09-Dec-24 18:12:50

Sky dancer I quite agree, but, how much do the Auction Houses get paid for hosting?

MayBee70 Mon 09-Dec-24 18:14:47

I really like Antiques Road trip, especially as it sometimes goes to shops that I go to, too ( they went to Etal a while back and I’d just been there) but I can’t stand Bargain Hunt. Always have hated it. Not sure why

Everyone is expected to haggle at these places.
No one pays the full price since most of it is tat coming from house clear.

I used to love Bargain Hunt!!?
I ve watched it right from early-on
but I've noticed a big change in the program for maybe 3 years now.
It's gone down hill dramatically!
Namely because of rubbish new
so-called experts .... Irita Whatshername & others so memorable I've forgotten their names!!
Furthermore the calibre of the contestants has dramatically diminished
Too many silly wannabes who just want to get their faces on tut telly.
The celebrity version is no better, with God help us! With even worse...... Love Islanders taking part with their blubbery fake lips & botox!
"I want the World to stop",
Modernlife is complete rubbish. 😡

Can’t think which one is Bargain Hunt. I have seen the one where two experts drive all over the country and must spend a fortune in fuel alone before making just a few quid on something. Not worth it in my opinion.

I agree but so many times they get 40 - 50% off the original price. The average is around 10%. 15 - 20 % if one is very lucky.

I'm not surprised, there are so many of these antiques programmes on TV now.

Antiques Roadshow remains the best and should endure.

“Pity they didn’t axe Bargain Hunt and keep Doctors”. I certainly agree they should have kept Doctors, sodapop. I really miss that programme. It covered many important topics.

I don't watch her any more, I find her rather sarcastic

Totally agree… the format is the wrong way round… they should BUY at Auction then try to sell what they’ve bought! The Buyers/ Sellers Premiums that those of us who buy at Auction average at c. 28% …so if they are selling they would under normal circumstances have to lose not only 28% of their profit, but also added ‘Administrative fees, VAT, and often a minimum charge per item! I was recently told by my local Auction House that if my lot went for £20… I would receive £2! Bargain Hunt never mention this! ( I have run a small book business for over 45 years so am well versed in these things) . It used to be fun at its inception, now it is almost unwatchable!

cupcake1 Tue 10-Dec-24 15:11:23

As others have said it’s well past its sell by date! 7 days a week come on BBC time to axe it permanently!!! As for the leg throwing at the end of the show it’s just pathetically laughable!!!
