Oh I like a bit of processed yuk and junk food over Xmas. Am presently baking up a storm for family next week and then towards the end of the week will start cooking up meals to put in the fridge. And of course will be a home cooked roast dinner Xmas day. So will look forward to something processed to slam on the buffet table along side the good stuff table for rellies coming aft Boxing Day.
I need a rest.
🙄

One of the tv adverts, can’t recall which supermarket, shows some round, white objects and I can’t work out what they are.
They resemble octopus without legs.

Think it’s classed as ‘party food’, but not sure if sweet or savoury.

Either way, I don’t fancy them.

They sound like bao buns.

I wait all year for the frozen prawn party ring with the lurid pink dipping sauce!

I really do not like the deserts, cannot stand anythingwhich is meant to be a bao bun

Wouldn’t buy the mini pork belly, quiche, Yorkshire puddings or burger type canopies.

I have got M & S single Coquelles St Jacques, prawn toasts, Brie and cranberry bites, and chicken satay canopies for Boxing Day.

I don’t need any of it, not even your canapĂ©s Sago đŸ€Ł

A mince pie and a glass of baileys is about as exotic as I need đŸ€Ł

I’ll leave the mince pie and have two glasses of Baileys đŸčđŸč

I love eating rubbishy processed food at Christmas. It's the only time I do really.

Watch out the food police are about!

As we’re all adults I think we can make our own choices.

mum2three Mon 16-Dec-24 12:44:10

Not something I would buy anyway.Traditional Christmas fare is sufficient for me.

sodapop Mon 16-Dec-24 12:44:01

Those crumpets sound good escaped have a few for me too. smile

I'm with you as well BlueBelle Baileys and mince pies my favourite.

I'm not keen, but occasionally pick out a few items like the various prawn offerings.
This year I've got my eyes on Crab & Brown Butter Mini Crumpets from Waitrose.

The relentless pressure from advertising encourages people to make daft food choices especially at this time of the year. I wonder how much of this excess is put in the bin?

According to a food waste advert I heard on the radio, 50% in Greater Manchester.

I’m sure my city isn’t alone on this!

Some of the 'picky bits' are actually really nice! Like you, we don't eat them very often, but at this time of year, we are entitled to indulge in a guilty pleasure or too. These threads (and the gravy ones) always bring out the food snobs.

😁
I think is the adverts - tv, magazines at this time of year!
slightly nauseous from the cavalcade of processed festive snacks. Additives overload, nothing like yummy emulsifiers and diglycerides of fatty acids to make up that perfect Christmas meal. Its absolutely being pushed by the food conglomerates and most people are drawn in by it

... you lost me at Matthew Macfadyen where I reminisced nostalgically among the morning mists to the "showstopper" moment when he declared that he loved, loved, loved whatshername in Pride & Prejudice...

I'd forsake the bronze-lustred curls of chocolate for such a moment.

Himself said he'll be satisfied with a Tesco Yule Log from the freezer section.

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏.

Same here!

It’s all yuk.

I make my own canapĂ©s as they are so expensive, here’s some ideas if anyone is stuck.

Make and freeze mini Yorkshire puds fill when warm/reheated fill with a dollop of mushy peas and a mini chipolata.
Fried Halloumi with a chunk of melon or a seedless grape on a cocktail stick.
Homemade Parmesan biscuits with a dollop of homemade pesto and baby tomato slice.
Smoked trout on a blini or brown bread ( salmon is now too heavily farmed).
Little croustades filled with haggis/vegetarian haggis and topped with scrambled egg.
Homemade soup served in little espresso cups.
Homemade hummus with pitta bread cut into strips and fried in a little olive oil.
Good old fashioned devils on horseback always go down well.
With the left over pastry from the mince pies I make mini quiches.

Christmas pud and cheese to finish.

Cossy Mon 16-Dec-24 11:59:11

Although I wouldn’t buy most of it, I don’t really have an issue with it being available for those who want to buy it.

MissInterpreted Mon 16-Dec-24 11:50:18

There must be a demand for it, I guess - no-one's being forced to buy it.

Ultraprocessed foods in boxes with sell by dates weeks ahead. Weird desserts - Do we need, in fact, any of the mad options now available to us on supermarket shelves? Waitrose has spent a lot of money this year on an advert featuring Matthew Macfadyen and comedian Joe Wilkinson, starring a pudding called the No 1 Red Velvet Bauble Dessert, which looks a bit like a Viennetta. At Sainsbury’s, you can buy a “Christmas Carol-Mel and Brownie Cheesecake”, which is apparently a cheesecake with brownie cubes, salted caramel sauce, chocolate mousse and “bronze lustred” chocolate curls. Tesco has a “Showstopper Macaron Tower”.

Probably all a bit yuk?
I’m hoping for a ‘less UPF Christmas’. Food my grandmother would recognise.

What about you?
