As for desserts at a buffet table (I don’t bake but I know a woman who does 🤣) and I’d just order a Victoria sponge and a chocolate log. Full of ‘what you know’. Butter, eggs, flour.
Delicious and proper food - no list of additives.

I remember serving vol au vents, (frozen?) filled with tinned prawns and tinned potato salad at a neighbourhood gathering after Christmas, must be about 1980.

They seemed delicious and the height of sophistication to me back then. 🥹

My guests enjoyed them, as I recall.

My FIL called vol au vents ‘mystery pies’.

I think Iceland is just advertising that they have "branded" foods with this photo.

Redhead, the point about bought party food is that it is there when you fancy it during a very busy period - your list would need to be prepared.

What’s wrong with what we have had for years cheese and pineapple on a stick. Mini sausage rolls or pies with pickle cheese fondue with dippy delights, meaty fishy or veggie kebabs that take your fancy.
Coleslaws and salads homemade or shop bought rice salad. As mentioned vol au vents with tasty fillings easy to prepare as is garlic bread. There is so much more normal savoury foods and desserts that are not saturated with rubbish.

I’ve just fried some slices of halloumi in olive oil 2 minutes each side and eaten them with a pink lady apple cut into wedges Babs03 for my lunch! Delicious.

I often have that for lunch. Half a pack of halloumi, sliced and fried in just a film of oil, a cut up apple plus maybe a few slices of a pepper and a small chunk of white cabbage.

These are not eaten as a meal by us but as a nibble to be enjoyed with a drink , especially with a few of us together.
Like someone up thread, I can’t scroll back, I freeze any we don’t use immediately and when my H was alive we would have a couple with our G&T before our meal at the weekend.
Very happy memories for me.

It reminds me of my girl, because she first ever cooked halloumi for me.

Yes,I love sweet chilli too.
Halloumi is something my boys actually like that isn't meat.
It means we eat the same, which is rare.
