The SNP and Christmas puddings! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Apparently in Scotland the (new?) law is that Christmas puddings containing alcohol cannot be bought until 10am! You couldn’t make this up could you? I thought alcohol ‘burns off’ anyway during cooking - leaving just the flavour?

At a self checkout in a supermarket in north Glasgow yesterday a couple tried to scan their pudding and the screen flagged up ‘assistance required’. Aargh! Nice early shop scuppered. New SNP law apparently.

Parallels with that amusing thread I started about sawing off the bottom of school classroom doors during Covid comes to mind!

My dentist advises not to use mouthwash with alcohol in it. Apparently, it’s very harsh on the gums.

Yes, me likewise, I use a non-alcoholic one - but some alcoholics will drink anything.

There is a reason methylated spirits (denatured alcohol) has additives in it to make it bad-tasting and/oror nauseating to discourage its recreational consumption.

I do remember the case of the man who was arrested and charged for driving over the legal limit for alcohol one Christmas Day.
He claimed he had drunk moderately, but it was his auntie's trifle which had pushed him above the legal limit.

Alcohol deaths? Highest in Europe. Reduced hospital admissions due to reduced places available for admission

Well they may still be, but I consider every life saved in that 13.4% worthwhile.
Of course everyone is entitled to their opinions, as long as they are not dressed up as facts from ‘data’.

I am not flippant about this matter. minimum unit pricing for alcoholic drinks I am sure has saved lives and is the main, if not only reason for this drop in alcohol related deaths.

But that still leaves the question of how many of these alcohol related deaths were the result of consuming food containing alcohol, whether Christmas puddings, cakes and mincemeat or, marmelade, honey or any of the wide variety of other foodstuffs that may be laced with alcohol. Not to mention that alcohol is also used to make some mouthwashes.

Sadly, nothing surprises me anymore.

How much alcohol is in Christmas puddings anyway?
Mine (homemade) contains only brown ale - and TBH we prefer it to any of the shop ones.
OTOH before taking it - with a spring of holly - to the table, it’s doused with a really good slosh of flaming 50/50 brandy and vodka!

My mother's recipe states "A bottle of old ale"

I don't know what old ale is so I used a dark beer, such as Hobgoblin.

😂😂😂. Obviously no cooks present when this law was passed

😂😂😂

Honestly, whatever next!

Christmas puddings are steamed for hours so any alcohol is driven off.
What about ready-made boeuf bourguinon? That contains red wine. Do customers have to wait patiently at the till to ascertain if they old enough to buy their ready meal?

What a load of numpties!

The family better not fill themselves up with the turkey s I have made three different Christmas puds. One natural, one with fruit and one ice cream Christmas pud. I made the latter as my youngest grandchild remarked,
‘‘I don’t like mincemeat’ so I am hoping an ice cream version may change her mind.

And that's what taxes should be spent on... to the benefit of the nation. Much better than wasting it on vanity projects like HS2.

£360 million on two ferries, not including the charter fees for replacements whilst these were being built us pretty eye watering. Millions on foreign Embassies, millions keeping an airport that noone else will buy - going to be a space station apparently. And an ex leader's husband charged with embezzlent. How much to take Alex Salmond to court, he was vindicated. Now they are currently fighting the definition of a woman case in the supreme court. That's just scratching the surface.

Mojack26 Wed 18-Dec-24 17:28:26

Never heard of it and I live here too...

GrauntyHelen SNP freebies are paid for by us poor tax payers. Nothing is for nothing.

Wyllow3 Wed 18-Dec-24 13:14:35

I guess its as straightforward as - the English self service tills haven't been trained to recognise the difference between 0% and real alcohol drinks?

heavenlyheath Wed 18-Dec-24 13:09:33

What a joke will the scots be fined if the put brandy on and set it alight

Its not at all a new law - but a strange new application of it by the shops concerned

Sale of alcohol free/ non-alcoholic drinks before 10am

"The Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 (“the 2005 Act”) sets out the legal framework which underpins the alcohol licensing regime in Scotland.

"In terms of the 2005 Act, the definition of alcohol does not include “alcohol which is of a strength of 0.5% or less at the time of its sale”. If the non-alcoholic beverage has 0.5% alcohol or less then it is not subject to the provisions of the 2005 Act"

But I cant find anywhere WHY shops are suddenly restricting purchases? It's not in the main articles on it

seems to me we need some sensible ruling pdq.

I find it astonishing that when I buy 0% alcohol lager in the supermarket I need assistance at the self service tills. The law is a ass! And this is England, so nothing to do with the SNP. At least it's not restricted to after 10am.

Do people feed alcohol into Christmas puddings like we do with the Christmas cake, which gets a tablespoon of brandy every week from being made until it’s iced? Genuine question, as I’ve never made a Christmas pudding in my life.

Not in this house, no, and TBH I’ve never heard of it. It gets a good dousing just before coming to the table!

I put port and brandy in mine when making. I prefer not to flambée it on the day. Nigella recommends vodka to flame it.

I remember my mil made hers with a bottle of stout.

GrauntyHelen Wed 18-Dec-24 12:42:08

Another Snp bashing thread SIGH Id rather be governed by them and enjoy my free bus travel prescriptions and tuition fees than live in any other part of the UK even if they were banning the sale of Christmas puds pre 10am which they aren't!

Who are these clowns in Government who spend time on stupid laws like this instead of tackling the big issues?

I'm not quite sure what you meant, just querying, because the O/P gave completely wrong information when it said,

"New SNP law apparently".

Nothing new - it was established on the first page that the SNP alcohol laws are 20 years old and the problems at checkout on puddings due to Waitrose check out systems because of labelling on goods.

(sorry in advance if that wasn't what you were referring to)

M0nica Wed 18-Dec-24 09:23:50

I put brandy in the mix when I make a Christmas pudding. I put a good slug of brandy on it when it has been cooked and it is going into (temporary) storage and dowse it again when repeated through on Christmas day before putting a match to it to take it, flaming, into the dining room.

*“The units of alcohol per pricing by the SNP?
Waste of time. 🤣
Well intentioned but ineffective actually.

Have you seen the data? 😮”*

Yes, I’ve looked at the Public Health for Scotlands evaluation data. This shows that minimum pricing has reduced deaths from alcohol by 13.4%and hospital admissions by 4.1%.
Can I ask what data you are referring to.

Allsorts Wed 18-Dec-24 06:53:54

Do you see many people lying comatose on pavements having got drunk on Christmas puddings.? Interesting.
