New Year superstitions?

I am not superstitious, but I know some people are.
Are there things you won’t do on New Year’s Day?

Many years ago when my oldest was just a baby, we arrived at my in-laws for a few days, after visiting other relatives. I needed to wash nappies and baby clothes but my father-in-law refused to let me. I had never come across this before. To say it was inconvenient is an understatement.

Yes I've come across that one. it's horrid. Not supposed to wash on NY Day. & I would normally put a wash on tomorrow.

It's my mum, when she rings to wish me Happy New Year she always checks I haven't washed anything. I'm not superstitious but she really believes these things & goes into a full-scale panic unless I lie about it.

Aveline Tue 31-Dec-24 20:25:52

I've never heard that one about washing. What's wrong with washing?

Casdon Tue 31-Dec-24 20:31:50

You wash away a life Aveline, apparently. It’s a silly superstition, but I never wash on New Years Day either, just in case.

Allira Tue 31-Dec-24 20:37:16

Me neither, I've been trying to catch up with washing today, the rest can wait.

"Wash on New Year's Day, wash one of the family away" I was told.

Omg my washing can wait! Never knew this one! But as I’m superstitious I’ll leave my washing till Thursday! My mam used to empty all the bins hoover right through and everything had to be pristine. She used to shove my dad out at 11,55 so he was the first foot in the house of the new year he carried a bottle of whisky and a piece of coal!

Grandmadinosaur Tue 31-Dec-24 20:43:14

My mum and Gran were also adamant about no washing on NY day but I think along the same lines as you Casdon

Grannynannywanny Tue 31-Dec-24 20:43:31

My Mum used to empty the kitchen bin into the outside dustbin about 11.30pm on New Year’s Eve and insisted nothing could be dropped into it till after midnight. It had to be clean and empty to start the new year.

I never wash on NYD either. As I finished all my washing today, does anyone know if I can iron it tomorrow?

Grannybags Tue 31-Dec-24 21:08:39

I'd never heard of not doing washing either. Glad I've just got organised after Christmas!

I was just wondering about the ironing tomorrow kittylester!

Grandmadinosaur Tue 31-Dec-24 21:23:09

To be on the safe side kitty I wouldn’t 🤣

My own DM ( Italian) always used to say whatever you do on NY day, you will do for the rest of the year, hence no washing of clothes but she always cooked a special medal, my DH always quoted this back to me if he wanted some " romance" on that day😂

62Granny Tue 31-Dec-24 21:42:03

Meal not medal, she deserved one of them.😍

Floradora9 Tue 31-Dec-24 21:51:10

In Scotland you did not wish anyone a happy new year until after 12 o'clock . The exception to this is to add " when it comes " .

Babs03 Tue 31-Dec-24 21:57:43

I have done washing on NY day because have never heard of that superstition but don’t have a load to do tomorrow. Not sure I would wait if I was a young parent with stinky baby stuff to wash.
My dad, who had black hair had to leave the house just before midnight then come back in on the stroke of midnight to bring in the new year.
And my parents would tell the same old joke on NYE about the man with as many noses as there are days in the year.

I think it's best to be on the safe side!

Is the superstition about washing, or pegging washing outside? My mother was horrified when I put washing out at the weekend, particularly Sunday. More to do with being an organised housewife than superstition, and vanished with the advent of working women.

BlueBelle Wed 01-Jan-25 12:34:08

Whoops just got my stuff out the washing machine oh well that s my luck gone for the year Never come across that one for sure
No I m not superstitious at all

62granny * but she always cooked a special medal* aren’t they a bit hard to cook 🤣

Allira Wed 01-Jan-25 12:35:28

I dried some washing this morning but I don't think that counts.
Just the washing away.

Norah Wed 01-Jan-25 13:06:37

Lentils for good luck.

Lentils for good luck.

Eat them or throw them over your shoulder?

wendyann23 Wed 01-Jan-25 13:12:52

My mum was horrified when I did the washing once on New Year’s Day when my son was in nappies (not disposables). Haven’t done any washing on New Year’s Day since.

AuntieE Wed 01-Jan-25 13:12:52

Having grown up in Scotland, I would never dream of washing on Nw Year's Day, or a Sunday for that matter.

My house is thoroughtly cleaned on Dec. 30th and 31st, After dinner on Hogmanay the kitchen bins are emptied and washed, the stove allowed to go out, ash-pan emptied, and fire re-laid.

Bed made up with clean linen, bills paid - need I go on?

kittylester Wed 01-Jan-25 13:13:00

I was told that washing on NYD washed someone out of your life.

I'm not prepared to risk it!

Aveline Wed 01-Jan-25 14:47:56

I've really never heard that washing superstition before. I had a shower and washed my hair though - what will that mean?
