New Year superstitions?

I am not superstitious, but I know some people are.
Are there things you won’t do on New Year’s Day?

Many years ago when my oldest was just a baby, we arrived at my in-laws for a few days, after visiting other relatives. I needed to wash nappies and baby clothes but my father-in-law refused to let me. I had never come across this before. To say it was inconvenient is an understatement.

I've really never heard that washing superstition before. I had a shower and washed my hair though - what will that mean?

Hair today gone tomorrow?

Lentils for good luck.

Eat them or throw them over your shoulder?

Pour them into a dark haired man’s hat 🎩 but not until midnight.

I never wash on NYD either. As I finished all my washing today, does anyone know if I can iron it tomorrow?

No! You must wait until Michaelmass, on no account do any ironing until then.🤭

My aunt was terrible for superstitions and I should never have listened to her but once heard, never forgotten.

You wash away a life Aveline, apparently. It’s a silly superstition, but I never wash on New Years Day either, just in case.

Never heard this before😁
I haven’t done any washing today but the machine has.I loaded it and added powder, does that count?
I honestly don’t understand anyone believing in superstitions.

I did my washing yesterday, but today I have cleaned the house and put the bin out. None of my neighbours has put their bin out though. Is that some other superstition?

Bins go out on Mondays here!

Mollygo did your dog survive, that was a bit harsh! 😄

😂😂
That’ll teach me to check before posting. We put the dog in the shower and her bedding into the washer. She’s fine, but the washing is still wet.

Yes, we always did first footing and that wasn't in Scotland.

A dark haired man would go outside the back door and come back in through the front door with a piece of bread, coal and money.

Scottish friends of ours used to clean the house from top to bottom on New Years Eve and throw a party in the evening.

Just before midnight a tall dark man (one of the guests) went outside the front door and re-entered at midnight carrying bread, money and a live coal (held with tongs) and put it back in the fireplace. We then all gathered in a circle, crossed our arms and held hands to sing "Auld Lang Syne". There would then be a toast to the New Year and lots of hugging and kissing.

I don’t worry about washing on NYD. If I don’t do it it’s because I did it on NYE or because I’m always too busy, but this morning, our dog had an accident so into the washer they went.

I too never heard about the washing, until I was telling an older friend what I achieved on a New a year's day, quite a few years ago. She was horrified I had done some washing.
I asked my Mum about this, it was new to her also. Wonder if this was a Regional thing?

I was told that washing on NYD washed someone out of your life.

I'm not prepared to risk it!

Having grown up in Scotland, I would never dream of washing on Nw Year's Day, or a Sunday for that matter.

My house is thoroughtly cleaned on Dec. 30th and 31st, After dinner on Hogmanay the kitchen bins are emptied and washed, the stove allowed to go out, ash-pan emptied, and fire re-laid.

Bed made up with clean linen, bills paid - need I go on?

My mum was horrified when I did the washing once on New Year’s Day when my son was in nappies (not disposables). Haven’t done any washing on New Year’s Day since.

I dried some washing this morning but I don't think that counts.
Just the washing away.

BlueBelle Wed 01-Jan-25 12:34:08

Whoops just got my stuff out the washing machine oh well that s my luck gone for the year Never come across that one for sure
No I m not superstitious at all

62granny * but she always cooked a special medal* aren’t they a bit hard to cook 🤣

eazybee Wed 01-Jan-25 12:32:03

Is the superstition about washing, or pegging washing outside? My mother was horrified when I put washing out at the weekend, particularly Sunday. More to do with being an organised housewife than superstition, and vanished with the advent of working women.

To be on the safe side kitty I wouldn’t 🤣

I think it's best to be on the safe side!

I have done washing on NY day because have never heard of that superstition but don’t have a load to do tomorrow. Not sure I would wait if I was a young parent with stinky baby stuff to wash.
My dad, who had black hair had to leave the house just before midnight then come back in on the stroke of midnight to bring in the new year.
And my parents would tell the same old joke on NYE about the man with as many noses as there are days in the year.

Floradora9 Tue 31-Dec-24 21:51:10

In Scotland you did not wish anyone a happy new year until after 12 o'clock . The exception to this is to add " when it comes " .
