Labour has come under fire after refusing to hold a public inquiry into historic sexual abuse by grooming gangs in Oldham.

Scandalous I think.
I’m with Elon Musk on this re his comments to Jess Phillips.

Elon Musk attacked the decision as “disgraceful” and Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative leader, said a full national inquiry into rape gangs was “long overdue”.

Jess Phillips, Labour’s safeguarding minister, insisted it was “for Oldham council alone”.

Really Jess?

How can you accidentally retweet a tweet by accident?

Iam64 Thu 02-Jan-25 18:48:28

Good to see we both consulted a search engine Rosie51. Naz Shah might not be everyone’s cup of tea but posting this about her begins to feel like an attack on Muslims.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 02-Jan-25 18:48:17

So there seems to be some confusion regarding NS’s tweet

Iam64 Thu 02-Jan-25 18:46:33

I’m not dismissing concerns about possible cultural issues with the grooming gangs. My direct experience mirrors the desperate story told I. The tv programme Three Girls. I do fear though that Musk and Badenoch seek to inflame tensions rather than five “truth’ which has been established by previous inquiries.
I disagree with Jess Phillips - if there’s to be more inquiries, it shouldn’t be left to individual councils. We know a lot about mistakes. Greater Manchester has 10 councils, Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan. They’re all covered by Gtr Manchester police force. The police were instrumental in not properly investigating or charging. Lancashire has 15 local authorities - many as with Gtr Manchester has areas of high deprivation and communities of Muslims of Pakistani origin.
The issues identified in individual inquiries will be so similar thst if further inquiries are needed, they should be national. My view is we don’t need this

I got interrupted before posting but see you've already covered the fullfact coverage of the story Iam64

I have never 'liked' and 'retweeted' a post by accident, and am not sure how you manage two separate actions by mistake.

She told the Yorkshire Post at that time: “I refuse to be defined by a tweet, that was up for eight minutes, that was rectified.”

Maybe she liked and retweeted because she thought it was a genuine Owen Jones tweet without thinking it through?

Naz Shah MP for Bradford (Labour) said an appalling thing about the girl victims of the grooming gangs which is available online.

Only she didn't.

I’ve read the long bbc article on line, which gives the correct information, I’m sorry my tech skills are poor, or I’d provide a link.
Naz Shah retweeted a post from Owen Jones in anparody account. It said ‘exactly Areeq, those abused girls in Rotherham and elsewhere just need to shut their mouths. For the good of // diversity’.
She immediately deleted it, claiming it was an accident. Is it possible irony was involved? I don’t know but I agree wuth this quote -“ but NS had a 20 year record of working on the issues of child abuse, violence against women and grooming which is well documented ‘. (Full fact social media)

In 2020, Ms Shah successfully sued the campaigning group Leave.EU after it called her a “grooming gang apologist” in a 2019 Facebook post. The group apologised and accepted Ms Shah was a "vociferous campaigner for victims of grooming gangs", said their post was “ill-judged and untrue” and paid her damages for libel.

It’s disgusting…

I think I read she re tweeted something along the lines of "these women should stop going on about being abused in the interests of social cohesion" not verbatim but that was the gist, then it got picked up and she quickly cancelled it or whatever people do or did on Twitter when they realise they've massively put their foot in it! I remember thinking the comment was pretty shocking, there was no sense of the sisterhood about it or empathy towards a fellow woman who'd suffered abuse shock

The trouble is that some of the young girls involved are loyal to who they think of as their ‘boyfriends’ and are reluctant to
Complain. I worked in child protection for many years and remember a particular 13 year old who was in care but who left the childrens home to meet a man/ men. The staff could not stop them going out. Despite all efforts she refused point blank to report what had happened. She believed he loved her.
It’s only much later when they may realise they were children and vulnerable to being groomed by people who used and abused them, but years may have passed and evidence harder to prove.
Like most things it’s not as straightforward as one might think.

Anniebach Thu 02-Jan-25 18:11:30

Why would Brown have said that when he spoke out about abuse of child migrants

Elon Musk should mind his own business, and look to the injustices that happen to the black, poor, and people either learning disabilities, and mental health in the USA. His country is a disgrace at times.

I thought he was a South African citizen? I don’t think he has any right to interfere in any other country’s business including the US.

If you have enough money it is easy enough to buy citizenship of the USA.

TerriBull Thu 02-Jan-25 18:07:36

Yes Nazir Afzal and Maggie Oliver have both been champions for the abused girls.

It's kind of obvious where obfuscation, denial, victim blaming all conspire to play into the far right's hands, there are sometimes uncomfortable truths that surround some ethnic groups, somehow that needs to be recognised without demonising the entire community. Sometimes appalling behaviours have to be faced head on, we've seen how not addressing wrongs, remember the mass assaults against women in Cologne followed by denials, what has gone on behind closed doors within churches, eventually these matters are outed and will blow up in the apologists' faces. Wrong doings should never be swept under the carpet, trivialised, or the abused told to suck it up for the greater good. There's far too much of that it's mealy mouthed at best and plain criminal at worst!

JaneJudge Thu 02-Jan-25 18:06:11

Did he actually say that? If so, that’s awful

Dumping vulnerable people (especially children) with all sorts of problems in just set areas has caused huge problems too and has led to this also.

Only brave women stand up for people

Ann Cryer said she was shunned by police, social services and imams when she tried to bring abusers to justice

I remember that Anniebach.

Thank God for Maggie Oliver and all those like her!

JaneJudge Thu 02-Jan-25 17:54:11

We let them down outside of these scenarios. The fallout is huge
We should be doing better
