Labour has come under fire after refusing to hold a public inquiry into historic sexual abuse by grooming gangs in Oldham.

Scandalous I think.
I’m with Elon Musk on this re his comments to Jess Phillips.

Elon Musk attacked the decision as “disgraceful” and Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative leader, said a full national inquiry into rape gangs was “long overdue”.

Jess Phillips, Labour’s safeguarding minister, insisted it was “for Oldham council alone”.

Really Jess?

I have never been particularly impressed by Jess Phillips; I can understand that she is shaken by Musk's juvenile attack on her, but I thought her appearance on the front bench in Parliament, yesterday, mouthing at people across the Chamber while Yvette Cooper was defending her was inappropriate.

I agree up to a point. Not all people from such different cultures behave as those ones. I do think that we have to take a much stronger line on integration and respecting our laws. Germany and Sweden have had to do this.

pinkquartz Tue 07-Jan-25 17:00:30

this issue is demonstrating the danger of allowing a very. different culture to set up home here and by people who will not allow integration to our way of life to take place.
there is danger here.
i think people need to learn that what westerners, who believe in democracy, will be dealing with in the future.
i think migrants need to know that our laws and culture are dominant. that we will. not be taken backwaeds to treat girls and women in such medieval ways.

the men in grooming gangs should be deported.

Oh I think Jess Jess Phillips is perfectly entitled to express her views obviously.

Galaxy Tue 07-Jan-25 16:45:42

I am afraid you are not going to be able to make me say the words you want me to say. Again this is all so familiar.

Galaxy Tue 07-Jan-25 16:43:34

Because I dont think she has the courage to be an effective feminist campaigner, she wasnt in any way brave around the gender issue, and it is very hard for me to understand that.

It's not fine to tell lies though?

No it is not. I also see Jess Phillips as another woman brave enough to take a stand in support of other women. I’m not interested in a hierarchy of who we support

I don’t agree with every word Maggie Oliver says but I support her right to express her views and see her as a genuine fighter for women and girls - like Jess Phillips

You find it appalling that I think other feminists have done more for womens rights than Jess Phillips. You are easily offended.

As I assume nobody is playing Feminist Top Trumps (game not president elect), why can you not acknowledge the work that Jess Phillips has done, Galaxy?.

Galaxy Tue 07-Jan-25 16:40:15

Sonia Sodha and JK Rowling for example are doing a really good job of focusing on the issues.

westendgirl Tue 07-Jan-25 16:37:54

No I think that even though you feel that others may have done more Jess Phillips deserves your support for doing something.

It is fine to criticise Jess Phillips, I am afraid in my view there are many braver feminist campaigners than her. It is fine to disagree on the merits of Jess Phillips.

Your starting point is somewhat more radical than mine.

Lydie45 Tue 07-Jan-25 16:32:49

I think it is disgraceful that Elon Musk is trying to interfere with UK politics. It is none of his business and he should mind his own business. It’s worrying he may have influence over Donald trump when he becomes the president officially.

westendgirl Tue 07-Jan-25 16:32:41

Why is it fine to criticise Jess Phillips in the aggressive way that has been reported when it is well known that she has worked well and hard for survivors. Galaxy I find your comments appalling.

That's interesting that survivors have the courage to support Jess Phillips but people on here are happy to type at their keyboards and cricitise.

Apropos of nothing but -

You'd think two MPs could not be more unalike than Jacob Rees-Mogg and Jess Phillips.
However, she visited him in his constituency years ago and they were filmed chatting to his constituents and each other as he showed her around. It was very interesting and both were very polite and seemed to have a good rapport.
Note the bored child tagging along with them, perhaps it was Nanny's day off.

Jess Phillips has worked to safeguard women and children throughout her career. She is principled, she left the shadow cabinet because she disagreed with policy on Gaza/Israel but didn’t set about colleagues who disagreed with her
She’s proud of the work she’s done with the Conservatives. The left don’t like her. We all saw the dreadful scenes of her being heckled abusively when her election was confirmed

The attacks on her by Musk and others are outrageous as well as dangerous. What’s to be done

I caught sight of Jess Phillips on tv in Parliament yesterday and she did not look well at all, very stressed.

I was very sorry to see her and hope she'll be all right. That was a wicked and unwarranted attack on a decent MP.

I agree. Whatever one's politics, nobody can deny that Jess Phillips is an outspoken campaigner for women and children who have suffered violence and abuse, domestic or other. It would be good to see MPs from other political parties acknowledge her tireless work, but I won't hold my breath.

Iam64 Tue 07-Jan-25 14:42:36

And let me stress I’m not wanting to close down debates on the Muslim abuse gangs, I’m wanting to acknowledge the horrific extent of child sexual abuse involving families, organisations, every faith group and more.
Child sexual abuse has been recorded since the beginning of time. I recall not long ago on this forum, the suggestion that posters whose work involved csa “see it everywhere”

He’s doing exactly what Starmer feared - winding up anti Muslim feeling. If he’d made similar comments about certain groups of white men or other faith groups there’d be a righteous outcry.

Jenrick stirring the pot Iam. I’m not a fan.

He is a loathsome man, the interview this morning was all about him. He is not only a blatant racist, he is also a liar, as was proved this morning. He is trying to out reform Reform.

Wyllow3 Tue 07-Jan-25 14:06:31

Yes, openly racist remarks by Jenrick. As in tarring all with same brush and usual memes.

It's salutary to have a report from the Muslim Council followed by his statements.
