Very bright above 🌙?

When Jupiter is close, you should be able to see some or all of the five Galilean moons with a pair of decent binocular. I have a camera with a very good zoom lens and captured this, but you could see it through binoculars.

I wish it had been my drive with a piece of it ending up in the NHM. We need a new drive☺️. More than likely that it would have ended up in the bin unless it had been too hot to handle then we might have put on our thinking hats.

the Winchcombe meteorite
I remember that, it must have been quite a sight. It made a large hole in their drive I think.

No not me that’s you 😀

It's your name! ⭐
I'm no expert but I did have I Spy the Night Sky when I was a child and used to go out and try to cross off things I saw.
DH did go to an astronomy club so he knows more than me but sometimes I nod and smile when he's explaining things.

Thank you. I had to go outside for something at around 5pm and saw it. I asked DH but he wasn’t sure. It was incredible bright.

Well there was me thinking you'd be our resident GN expert on astronomy! ⭐

I did see the Winchcombe meteorite in Feb, 21. I had taken the dog out for a wee just before 10pm and as I was coming down the steps from the garden I saw a very bright light reflected moving at an incredible speed across a bedroom window. I was so busy negotiating the steps as the lights had gone out that I didn’t think any more about it until I saw it on the news. It actually landed in Winchcombe shortly after I saw it as Winchcombe is just 50 miles from me.

Soon there will be 4 visible planets lined up, an unusual occurrence.

Apparently later in the month Venus and I think Jupiter, will be very close and both can be seen with the naked eye.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 04-Jan-25 17:59:07

I saw it last night. Gin clear sky with the sun just disappeared, absolutely beautiful.

And again tonight, particularly bright about 6.45 pm.
(I was persuaded to go outside again to get a better view!)
The stars were really bright last night when I looked about 2.30am.

It just made me think how insignificant we are.

Yes Allira, my brain boggles when I stand outside & look the night sky. I think of all the things that we can't actually see too.
We are so privileged to live in this magical planet. "The third rock from the sun" Did you ever watch that programme? I used to watch it with my Boy's. 💫💥🕳

No and I don't know why I didn't.

Venus. No doubt. How do I know, my brother is an astrophysicist If he says it's Venus, it's Venus. If I disagreed he'd hit me, so it's Venus.

How could anyone hit a person with such a wonderful name?
Wibblywobblywobblebottom?? 😊

Definitely Venus - it’s always the brightest planet. We could see the Moon’s craters with our telescope last night (until the clouds moved in).

knspol Sat 04-Jan-25 15:23:09

I saw a really bright 'star 'in the south about a month ago and after googling it seemed to be the planet Venus which it said would be visible for a while at this time of year, can't remember the explanation. I still see it every night in the same position when the sky is clear. Tried to take a photo last night but it didn't come out well it was very close to the arc of the moon and looked magical.

Gogo84 Sat 04-Jan-25 14:45:58

Oh you are so lucky to see this phenomenon. We live in the middle of a city, and are lucky to see very few stars at all. We haven't got a car either so can't drive to a darker area. My most vivid memory was when I was walking the dog when I was in my 20s and I witnessed a huge meteor shower.

Doodledog Sat 04-Jan-25 13:55:00

I saw the star, and convinced myself that it was a reflection of a Christmas tree light on the window grin. It was very shiny, and looked quite magical against the clear, dark sky.

Greyduster Sat 04-Jan-25 13:51:24

Definitely Venus.

JamesandJon33 Sat 04-Jan-25 13:41:49

Beautiful crescent moon last night.

leeds22 Sat 04-Jan-25 12:32:42

The Moon and Venus were beautifully clear as we arrived home at 5 pm.

Milest0ne Sat 04-Jan-25 12:25:38

I have an app on my iPad called SKY GUIDE. (free). As we live in a central Lancashire valley I don't find it as useful here as I do on holiday as it is always cloudy when there is something interesting to see, - northern lights or meteors etc

MickyD Sat 04-Jan-25 12:16:23

Yes it’s Venus

undines Sat 04-Jan-25 11:46:01

Moon and Venus were in conjunction yesterday evening, it was definitely Venus, and my sharp eyed granddaughter could even see it as a tiny crescent!
