Very bright above πŸŒ™?

Think it is Venus.

JamesandJon33 Thu 02-Jan-25 17:44:13

Venus, the morning star?

JaneJudge Thu 02-Jan-25 17:45:15

Yes it’s very bright tonight

Allira Thu 02-Jan-25 18:04:56

Jupiter says DH, near the moon.

Mars is a but further away, showing very red tonight.

Well, of course, I had to go out into the garden with DH and inspect Jupiter then look for Mars.

It was flippin' freezing, Whingey!

There are some brilliant apps for researching the night sky, or even just google 'the sky tonight' for info. We had a clear night as well, and on our dog's last outing I could see Mars noticeably red, in the south-east and another planet higher up in the south.

Venus

Oh dear, just upset DH, he's off to consult his Night Sky! πŸŒ™ *

As the new year of 2025 begins, the night sky of January offers an exciting lineup of celestial events for stargazing enthusiasts. These include a rare chance to see a parade of four bright planets – Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars – in one evening view.

For years I told my daughter it was the star that the 3 wise men followed πŸ˜‚

Remember the wonderful late Patrick Moore? He’d know.

Whingey Thu 02-Jan-25 20:23:16

Sorry about the freezing weather allira

Allira Thu 02-Jan-25 20:34:44

No snow (yet) at least

The jury's still out. A conjunction of planets? A comet? A supernova?
Patrick Moore wrote a book about it.
The Magi were probably astronomers.

It depends, of course, on which was the actual year of Jesus's birth.

I caught the tail end of something on TV saying we may see the Northern Lights again, something to do with an explosion on the sun??
I didn't see the whole clip so may have got it wrong, but I'll be watching the sky for a night or two, I missed it last time. Anyone know where to look? - towards the north? - or towards the setting sun?

Allira Thu 02-Jan-25 21:04:55

Face north away from light pollution.
Best to look through a camera lens.

And again tonight, particularly bright about 6.45 pm.
(I was persuaded to go outside again to get a better view!)
The stars were really bright last night when I looked about 2.30am.

It just made me think how insignificant we are.

Moon and Venus were in conjunction yesterday evening, it was definitely Venus, and my sharp eyed granddaughter could even see it as a tiny crescent!

MickyD Sat 04-Jan-25 12:16:23

Yes it’s Venus

Milest0ne Sat 04-Jan-25 12:25:38

I have an app on my iPad called SKY GUIDE. (free). As we live in a central Lancashire valley I don't find it as useful here as I do on holiday as it is always cloudy when there is something interesting to see, - northern lights or meteors etc

leeds22 Sat 04-Jan-25 12:32:42

The Moon and Venus were beautifully clear as we arrived home at 5 pm.

JamesandJon33 Sat 04-Jan-25 13:41:49

Beautiful crescent moon last night.

Greyduster Sat 04-Jan-25 13:51:24

Definitely Venus.

Doodledog Sat 04-Jan-25 13:55:00

I saw the star, and convinced myself that it was a reflection of a Christmas tree light on the window grin. It was very shiny, and looked quite magical against the clear, dark sky.
