Irrational dislikes of people you don’t know..

Perhaps I shouldn’t introduce this topic, as it could get nasty. I was thinking how I have irrational dislikes of people I see on television whom I don’t know at all. Helen Skelton, Sarah Moore (from Money for Nothing), Meghan used-to-be Markle, Luke Littler. I know nothing about any of these people, but I can’t stand them.

Of course the upside of this is that I have irrational likes as well.

I think irrational dislikes often stem from subconscious biases or projecting our insecurities. It might happen when someone reminds us of someone who hurt us in the past or exhibits traits we suppress or dislike in ourselves. Recognizing this helps me shift toward curiosity instead of judgment. What about you—have you experienced this?

Not at all

I loathe people with a deadly loathing. Nothing whatsoever to do with any 'insecurities' I may, or may not have.

I have the ability to hate. No questions asked !
End of.

They seem to try too hard, and sometimes lack professionalism.

I don't hate but get "unsettled" by people because of their looks, mannerisms and speech
"Step back" people, they makes me recoil
David Bowie looks feral, Jack Nicholson looks not only terrifying but insane.
James Nesbit who played Pontius Pilate with his irremovable "Norn Irn" accent
Lyse Doucet who strangles every innocent vowel she encounters
Lesley Garrett who unleashes her bosom and charges up behind it and is a "singer"???
Woodentops-unmoving Suranne Jones, Christopher Eccleston
But Gordon Ramsay is amazing in his series on US restaurants and swears very little.

I don’t like Alan Titchmarsh or Charlie Dimmock either, but I thought everybody liked David Attenborough!

Yes , not liking David Attenborough is certainly a sin. It may well be a crime !!!

I just really try hard not to do this. I’m not perfect but feel that I shouldn’t judge people who I don’t know.
My pet hate is any generalisation (at all really but particularly those) that involve “these people” when the speaker has never met/had any association at all with the person/group to whom they are referring.
As in my father’s recent “these people who rent property” 🙄

When I was working I took instant dislikes to some people but when I confessed this to a colleague was told I should like them as they were all born under Sagittarius and I am an Aries! Maybe there’s more to star signs than we think!

Amol Rajan tops my list and he has spoilt University Challenge for me.
I used to like Chris Packham when he was young on The Really Wild Show but have gone off him since he became so sanctimonious.
I don’t like Emily Maitlis or Victoria Coren Mitchell though they seem clever.
I dislike lots of TV presenters as they are so overpaid - with my hefty licence fee - and many don’t seem specially talented.

I do like Paul Martin on Flog It, though.

In real life I hardly ever dislike anyone, and if I met any of these people I would probably like them too!

You are not alone; I can’t stand Jeremy Clarkson, Stephen Fry and Keir Starmer. It’s not just what they say but the way they say it. (They don’t like me either.🤣)

My friend can't stand Angela Raynor as she looks so much like a girl who bullied her at school.
I dislike few people I don't actually know and come to think of it I don't dislike many people.

For years I disliked anyone called Linda as I was bullied and spat at by someone called Linda when I was at primary school. Then I met someone called Linda who became a good friend. Sadly in my last job I had a supervisor called Linda who is an absolute b***h. Everyone dislikes her who works closely with her, but she seems able to charm others who work less closely. So the jury's out on the Lindas of the world!

I have no problem with Dawn French or Alan Titchmarsh, but can't stand Monty Don!

Ilovedogs22 Mon 06-Jan-25 16:26:48

Sitting here looking at the sunset a certain person, I'd forgotten I'd hated (Goodness knows how!!!) popped into my brain.
It's that awful Francis Tophill person from the now completely rubbish Gardeners World.!
I cannot stand her sanctimonious attitude not her twittering, simpering voice not her blubbery, red face. Please, Oh please don't let that charisma-free lump take-over from Monty Don,
but even he's become boring & very pretentious lately. 🤔

Louella12 Mon 06-Jan-25 16:28:52

Holly Willoughby, Susannah Reid , Kate Garroway, Ed Balls ... in fact most people on daytime TV. Laura Tobin. Any of the Loose Women. Alison Hammond. Keir Starmer. Rishi Sunak.

Oh and Trudeau, he's always annoyed me and I've just heard he's resigned. Not just me then.

Neilspurgeon0 Mon 06-Jan-25 16:30:47

I can’t stand David Boring Attenborough but quite liked George Alagiah. Cannot abide Helen Skelton, Paddy McGuiness or Jimmy Carr but think Sally Taylor South Today is the bees knees.

No accounting for taste is there !

theworriedwell Mon 06-Jan-25 16:38:54

I don't really dislike many people but plenty I'm not bothered about. Top of my dislike list is Stephen Fry.

Who's a "Nasty not so little man" Vanessa? There are so many them around & about? 🤔

This must be one of the worst threads ever on Gransnet!

it's quite an eye opener

Dianehillbilly1957 Mon 06-Jan-25 16:59:21

Some come across instantly likeable whilst others don't, my unlike list is too long!!

Alison333 Mon 06-Jan-25 17:38:56

Oh blimey! I thought I was alone in finding Jimmy Carr,
and Michael McIntyre irritating. I'm also not keen on David Mitchell because he has dead-looking eyes!

Unlike other people I think Amol Rajan and Stephen Fry are fine.

And as other people have also said, they're probably nice in real life!

MaggsMcG Mon 06-Jan-25 17:43:08

Jim Cary and Jonathan Ross i don't like. No reason.

Daffydilly Mon 06-Jan-25 17:58:20

I used to really dislike one of the models in the Cotton Traders catalogue, enough to stop me buying something I liked if she was the one wearing it.

Unreasonable, I know.

GrammarGrandma Mon 06-Jan-25 18:01:06

There are quite a lot of "hates" on here I've not heard of, possibly because I don't see daytime TV? But it's not irrational to hate Donald Trump or anyone whose politics we know and dislike.

My irrational, possibly, dislikes are both Carrs, David Walliams (actually that's not irrational), Clare Balding, Lucy Worsley, Jeremy Clarkson, Vanessa Redgrave's voiceovers at the beginning and end of Call the Midwife, Janina Ramirez, Alan Titchmarsh, Victoria Coren Mitchell.

Ones I am drawn to are Georgia Tennant, Sarah Lancashire, Ruth Jones, Alison Steadman, Douglas Henshall, Michael Kitchen (I'm trying not just to list men I find physically attractive, though those last two are), Jon Snow (much missed), Kathy Newman, Alison who plays "Tosh" in Shetland.

Flo122 Mon 06-Jan-25 18:01:24

I don't like Lorraine Kelly nor Fiona Bruce. Chris Packham gets on my wick too. I guess there are personality traits that annoy me and we do see them on the tv a lot. Strangers, though, that's a different thing. I can take an instant dislike to someone the moment I meet them.

Nanny27 Mon 06-Jan-25 18:19:02

Anyone who becomes a celeb because of who they are or were married to.
Christine McGuiness
Abby Clansy
Debbie Magee
Colleen Rooney
Priscilla Presley
And on and on and on

Patsy70 Mon 06-Jan-25 19:09:55

They are not ‘hates’ on here, just ‘irrational dislikes’, but many ‘likes’ too. I’m finding it very enlightening, unlike some of the very unkind comments on some other threads. I really find ‘smugness’ unpleasant, and there is a lot of it on TV. The very clever Sandi Toksvig is an example, along with Fiona Bruce (who I used to like at one time).
