Today I was trying to renew my home insurance Now it seems virtually impossible to speak to a human, even to do that you have to go through a robot and my poor little robot could not understand my post code I speak very ordinary English I have absolutely no accent at all but every time I told her my post code she got one letter wrong most often saying ‘Y’ when I said ‘E ‘even ‘Eeee’ and then I got ‘that doesn’t match’
We played this game a few times and then I shouted at the poor little thing I didn’t hear her cry but I think I must have hurt her feelings with my frustrations
Have you ever abused a robot 😢

My poor DH struggles every evening to get Alexa to set a timer while he wears his special eye mask for his blepharitis. I t is especially galling that she understands my RP immediately!

What do you mean you don't have an accent? EVERYBODY has an accent!!
As for the poor robot, I'm sure it'll go to the robot coffee room and laugh about the woman whose accent it didn't understand.

Holli57
Ai isn’t coming it’s with us now, every day.
I’m surprised that the robots aren’t programmed to recognise the phonetic alphabet. Then there would be no confusion.

Oh gosh poor you!

Loobyloo12 Wed 15-Jan-25 13:15:04

Ive certainly felt that way!Great that you can see humour there and share it....x

Sometimes, if you are VERY lucky you can scroll down to the very very small print right at the bottom of the screen and find a phone number.

I abused a little round robot vacuum cleaner - he got caught up in the fringe of a Chinese rug - made a loud noise and a big flash and sadly caput!

Everyone has an accent!

Many many times!🤣

This is why I bypass these automated systems by using the relay app. You don't have to be deaf to use it and it's great you can use voice to text, text to text, face to face and other ways. So I usually opt so speak to someone face to face so I can have a real conversation. Just feels like Facebook video messenger

Has anyone actually had a problem resolved by a chatbot? I certainly never have. All they seem to have the remit to do is direct you to various "help" pages that you'e probably already tried.

Oh yes. But I don't feel a bit sorry.
Why do they not understand the word nought for 0? Why do they prefer O? Nor did she understand my postcode.
So I told her not to be so stupid.

I think they prefer Zero for nil and Oscar for O

Oh, thanks, I'll remember that if I have the misfortune of another one answering the phone!

If you ignore the robot a human will answer eventually, do not press any options at all just wait and eventually you will hear. We are connecting you to an assistant.

Par for the course...Hate these stupid Bots! They're useless....

LilCatMomma83 Tue 14-Jan-25 17:36:25

Thank you BlueBelle this made me laugh - and yes, I too, have felt guilty after typing in capitals to a ChatBot "LET ME SPEAK TO A HUMAN YOU MORON". Very unkind.

hollie57 Tue 14-Jan-25 17:00:38

How I agree with you how on earth are we expected to deal with this Ai that is coming according to starmer yesterday it will be a nightmare when we no longer get a human being answering customer services these robots can’t deal with every
Problem today I was logged out of my bank account if I had not had the help of a human being I never would of been able to get a robot to understand the problem it took 30 minutes for them to sort it out god help us if this ever happens .

Elegran

Apparently robots are such clever-clogs that they only take nano-seconds to solve those "select all pics with traffic lights in them" tests. Human beings take longer.

It was putting a puzzle piece in place - it said I'd probably done it too quickly 😯

Alison333 Tue 14-Jan-25 16:17:17

My DH has a proven method for getting from robot to human. He speaks gobbledeegook until the bot gives up and transfers him!

That’s the way Avaline. Always be very difficult to understand, play hard to get - then the powers that be get the message that they really NEED to continue to employ humans. I am notorious for ‘f&£:;g up’ bank, insurance, travel any robots - pressing Zero several times when you only have numbered options often drops you to a human too.

Allira Tue 14-Jan-25 14:57:35

I had to prove I was not a robot the other day before I could access a website.
Unfortunately I failed and was banned from looking at the site (just an auto-sales site, nothing odd!). The message said I'd done the puzzle too quickly.

I shout at robots all the time but I still don't get to speak to a person.

But there are human robots that treat people like dirt funny enough they tend to be in government departments

The last two government helpline people I dealt with were so friendly and helpful I almost jumped in shock! I hadn't been expecting it.

Thanks for the support. My husband (who worked a phone desk for the Tax Office) will appreciate it when I tell him. The general public seems to think that people who answer phones are fair game for a blitz of venom and bad language. They're only trying to do their jobs, people, and if you haven't paid your tax you should be ashamed, not self-righteously entitled!

NonGrannyMoll Tue 14-Jan-25 14:37:36

I get that reaction every time I say the 4-digit number the credit card security-checker asks for on the phone. The instruction is "Type it in or say it" but it has never recognised my spoken numbers. It's not as if I'm not speaking plain English. If their gismo can't understand every accent in the UK, why use it? I'm a Londoner with an accent that's been around for quite some time (understatement). Gor, strike a light, guv, yore avin a larf, intcha?

Reminds me of a few years ago when I lived somewhere where my postcode ended 8EG. I got stuck talking to a robot who kept repeating “8 for example” 😂 It was very funny but hugely frustrating. I did try saying “Echo Golf” but it wasn’t recognised.
