“Staying true to my values”.

So says Michelle Obama as she announces she won’t be attending Donald Trump’s inauguration next Monday.

Personally I think there are expectations around her position as former FLOTUS. She ought to attend in my opinion. The voters have made their choice - sorry Michelle. It’s not ‘all about you’. See the bigger picture here. It’s a State occasion, you should be there. “Your truth”? Pah!

Even though I disagree with you (yet again FriedGreenTomatoes2!) I do understand where you are coming from.

I think Michelle Obama should make her own decision about thi. It will be criticised, it might be seen as bad manners but she is her own person, not her husband's accessory.

That said, I suppose it does say more about your mindset than mine.
I have to agree again. This is becoming worrying. There is a limit, though, a line I cannot cross! 😁

Why would you even begin to compare the two- if not? They have nothing, but nothing in common. Apart from hair and skin colour.

"I’m still the same person that I am, and I’ve never defined myself by my relationship.”– Meghan Markle

"As you get older, you become more comfortable in your skin and comfortable in saying no to things...I’ve also learned that saying no is just as valuable as saying yes. It’s something that, I think, comes with age and really having a sense of your self-worth. And then you make choices based on that.” – Meghan Markle

“Staying true to my values”. - Michelle Obama

My understanding is that the comparison is more to do with what they have said, rather than anything else.

Other assumptions say more about those who are making them.

Why Meghan for Michelle ? surely not colour of skin

Appalling indeed.

Not at all in any way.
You’re flogging a dead horse with this attitude. That said, I suppose it does say more about your mindset than mine.

She my rebuttal upthread.

“Cease and desist” as my lawyer would say if I had one. 😂

The OP is just appalling, truly

I'm assuming you are referring to what was written in the Original Post not to the Original Poster Claremont?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 17-Jan-25 17:55:01

I’m old fashioned too Allsorts. 😁
Especially something so high profile (world stage).

If my husband was going I would attend to support him. That considered old fashioned now though I suppose.,Trump makes my skin crawl but he was elected democratically.

Smileless2012 Fri 17-Jan-25 17:35:38

appalling!!! really; you found the OP shocking, dismaying and/or horrific?

Did Trump attend Biden’s inauguration? 🤔

The OP is just appalling, truly.

If you’re upset about Michelle Obama’s decision not to attend Donald Trump’s inauguration, have you forgotten that Donald Trump refused to accept the results of the election he lost. He then plotted a coup and encouraged an insurrection and didn't attend Biden’s inauguration. Did Melania go?

Casdon Fri 17-Jan-25 17:22:35

I think you’re making excuses for Trump’s appalling behaviour when he lost. They don’t wash, with me anyway.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 17-Jan-25 17:16:20

I think to be honest, some formal handovers are more congenial than others. Melania Was interviewed recently on a station in the US and said she found it terribly difficult going into the White House when the Obama’s left. She said lots of documentation that would’ve been helpful was missing. However, she said this time with the Biden departure things have been much smoother.

I don’t think the Democrats would’ve liked Trump & Melania at Biden’s inauguration.

He behaved like a small minded, spoilt brat who couldn’t accept defeat. He was invited, as all ex presidents are, there is normally a formal handover. There really was no excuse.

I’m glad Barack at least realised it’s politics and nothing else (not personal) and that being civil costs nothing.

Yes, he and Biden are really showing Trump up, aren’t they?

Claremont Fri 17-Jan-25 16:57:22

With Michelle all the way.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 17-Jan-25 16:55:22

Maybe. Maybe not. My source was in the Telegraph. 🤷‍♀️

Daily Mail gossip fgt - might be true but more likely malice _. I skim it often and never fail to feel a tad grubby

No it wasn’t/isn't … but you know well enough how threads meander.

^I suppose you might infer she is doing what she wants but even that is speculation^

True indeed Lathyrus. Guilty as charged.
However aren’t most of our posts (on various topics) speculation?

Ah yes, lots of speculation and lots of false and deliberately misleading posts too.

I guess we have to learn to ignore them and see them (and their posters for what they truly are.

There’s a John Donne quote there somewhere that has just (half) popped into my mind………

They are divorcing and Obama is dating Jenifer Anniston. Apparently.

Allira Fri 17-Jan-25 16:19:54

AHA, so here's the comparison or similarity with M (& H) after all!
Speculation about both marriages, though I personally think M & H are rather happy.
😁

Show me a trouble-free marriage and I'll show you a doormat.
