“Staying true to my values”.

So says Michelle Obama as she announces she won’t be attending Donald Trump’s inauguration next Monday.

Personally I think there are expectations around her position as former FLOTUS. She ought to attend in my opinion. The voters have made their choice - sorry Michelle. It’s not ‘all about you’. See the bigger picture here. It’s a State occasion, you should be there. “Your truth”? Pah!

I totally agree with her and admire her ‘values’ Her husband has to go but I doubt he really wants to.
Trump snubbed Biden’s ceremony altogether as did his wife so he’s getting a little of his own medicine back again.

Did Trump attend Biden’s inauguration? 🤔

PaperMonster2 Thu 16-Jan-25 09:13:47

Stuff expectations. Well done Michelle Obama.

Good for her. I don't suppose she's obliged to go.

Smileless2012 Thu 16-Jan-25 09:19:10

Marriedalongtime is right, Trump didn't attend Biden's inauguration. Protocol was that he should have been there but protocol doesn't apply to Michelle.

She isn't saying or doing anything against the choice made by the majority simply exercising her choice not to attend.

I think Michelle is great. Maybe she will run for office next time?

Anniebach Thu 16-Jan-25 09:21:00

She has every right to stay away, she was never president

pascal30 Thu 16-Jan-25 09:21:42

I admire Michelle.. such an intelligent, principled woman..

Sueki44 Thu 16-Jan-25 09:30:31

I too admire Michelle, she’s a great role model. Why should she go to the inauguration, she’s not a former president.

eazybee Thu 16-Jan-25 09:36:03

Although I don't think Mrs. Obama is a Meghan Mark two,(too intelligent) I quickly became tired of all her self-promotion after they left the White House; having read her first book I had no desire to read another. She should attend; her absence will be noted and she can't claim she is frightened because of lack of security.
Bad manners.

Oreo Thu 16-Jan-25 09:40:48

Yes, she should go if only to support her own husband. If it’s a tradition for wives to attend along with their ex Presidents DH.
It’s a political day not a social outing.

Ladyleftfieldlover Thu 16-Jan-25 09:47:03

I admire her for not coming up with a diplomatic cold or whatever. I couldn’t bear to be in the same room as trump. Anyway, trump refused to attend Biden’s inauguration, so it could be argued that trump started the trend for non-attendance.

Jewelle Thu 16-Jan-25 09:50:56

Well done Michelle. She has more backbone than the others combined.

Lathyrus3 Thu 16-Jan-25 09:52:19

She’s not a FLOTUS any more. No reason why she should have to turn up to anything connected with it.

Would she even be sat next to him? Or are all the previous presidents sat together?

Totally don’t get the Meghan bit🙄🤔

Casdon Thu 16-Jan-25 09:52:26

Women are not an accessory to their husband’s job, she has long been quite clear what she thinks about Trump’s morality, and I can’t think of a single reason why she should be obliged to go against her principles to attend. I doubt if any of the ex presidents are attending with any joy whatsoever in their hearts.

keepingquiet Thu 16-Jan-25 09:53:53

Yes, following trump's lead- what's good for the goose and all that.

Personally this isn't important in the scale of things is it? Not for me anyway.

So do I. It’s her free choice, for the moment. Something that is advocated by posters on here, so why criticise her?

Marmin Thu 16-Jan-25 09:55:12

Why isn't she going?
She has to get up the next morning and look at herself in the mirror.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 16-Jan-25 09:55:53

Just 3 of us then who think it’s bad form! We are in the minority on this. 😁

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 16-Jan-25 09:58:39

Rumours …. The Obamas are heading for divorce! 😮
Maybe that’s the real reason?
She didn’t attend Jimmy Carter’s funeral last week either with Barack - who was seen laughing and joking with Trump.

Lathyrus3 Thu 16-Jan-25 09:59:53

Guess it’s a Martin Luther moment.

“Here I stand, God help me. I can do no other.”

All any of can do is be true to ourselves.

LizzieDrip Thu 16-Jan-25 10:22:14

Well done Michelle!

I’d really like her to stand for the role of President next time. I think she would have had more chance of beating Trump than Kamala Harris.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 16-Jan-25 10:24:12

Anybody would have had more chance of beating Trump than Kamala. Dud choice.

Kate1949 Thu 16-Jan-25 10:29:38

Good for Michelle.
