I was told yesterday that the thumbs up emoji and sign, is now classed as aggressive. I asked my DGD, she confirmed. This symbol has been used as ; OK, Great, I’m Fine for years by the armed services, divers and every day people. Woke has gone mad. Please stop the world, I want to get off.

Raised eyebrows will be deemed aggressive any day now!

It’s not rude here. The word β€˜woke’ is though.

Well, I’m sticking two fingers up at that idea. So there.

Surprisingly, it is also considered rude in Australia.

That came as a big surprise to my Australian family and friends (Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide) Perhaps it the same as with the UK. Some find it rude in OZ and others don’t.

Me too Mollygo,
Our Australian family use it a lot on our WhatsApp group. No one ever thought we were rude to each other.

I am glad to learn this as I do sometimes use this emoji. It seemed less rude to me than not replying at all. But I will try to remember to do the latter now.
I suppose it is a bit like younger people not sending thank you letters which grans often complain about here. Customs and language do change.
It is endless and hard to keep up when you are older. I remember being impatient of older people who struggled with decimal coinage. Now I understand their confusion. You live and learn in some ways through ageing, even when struggling to learn new things in other ways

How people love to dictate and feel important! Why do others feed their egos?
Just carry on as usual and ignore all the supposed new interpretations.

Of course first used by Roman Emperors at the end of the gladiators contest. Down meant : put him to death. Up : grant him life he is good.

And here was me thinking it was Norman Vaughan, hosting Sunday Night At The London Palladium, who invented the thumbs-up (Swinging) and thumbs-down (Dodgy).

Me & mum use it to let each other know we are ok, I will never stop using it- saves me going into long winded texts.

Saying that I wouldn’t use in the street

Apparently, thumbs up and by association it's emoji, is rude in the following places:-

Middle East, Latin America and West Africa where it = middle finger.

Afganistan, Iran, Greece and parts of Italy where it means "up yours"

Surprisingly, it is also considered rude in Australia.

Apologies if somebody has posted about this before, I did scroll through but I may have missed it.

The definition of woke: Aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice).

Language evolves and in the same way "Sick" means something completely different these days, I suspect "Woke" means something different to an awful lot of people. The definition will probably change officially at some point.

We’re pretty much all asleep here.

What a load of woke rubbish! No wonder young people have mental health problems. Get a life - get off your phone and actually talk to someone !! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ˜Ž

The die was cast in 1895 when The Post Office trunk telephone system was opened to the public.

We've been 'on the phone' ever since, and no-one is going to "get off" it in order to secure a "life" that you appear to think they don't have.

Because the phone is now an integral part of it.

Just more 'interesting stuff' about 'wokism'. You can interpret an emoji as you like, it's a picture! πŸ‘πŸ˜‚

Good idea. GNers will recognise one another when we hear the code word grin. How spiffing would that be?

Sorry - that was to Nanny27. I started to reply then went to answer the door and the thread moved on before I posted.

I have a number of β€œwoke” friends (whatever that means 🀣) and we use a thumbs up all the time - and my Gen Z grandkids use it!

It’s the complete misuse of the word woke which pees me off πŸ‘ŽπŸ‘ŽπŸ‘Ž

I use the thumbs up to let someone know I have read their email which doesn't need a reply..
I haven't come to terms with "woke" Who decided to use the past tense of wake in a different context. What does it mean?

pascal30 Fri 17-Jan-25 16:57:42

love that Nanny27 and can remember it being used..
