Yellow weather warnings - sensible precautions or scaremongering?

Just that really.
I find I am worrying myself sick over fetching GD on Friday after school to stay with me as I am taking her to “Ballet Shoes” at the National Theatre on Saturday.
Worrying now about trains being cancelled, as I decided not to drive to Birmingham and back in one afternoon, worrying about delays on Saturday.
I could not bear to disappoint her. This is a special occasion for her - a birthday present from me - and the tickets were not cheap - plus it was the only date that suited us both for a matinee.
So I looked at the more detailed local forecast for Friday and Saturday and it doesn’t look too bad at all - but all this talk of 90mph gales is giving me sleepless nights.

That phone siren warning was horrible. Very sinister sound somehow. I suppose it has to be. Even the cat got a fright.

Last time with Storm Darragh I didn't get one, nor did DGD although the rest of the family did.
My phone was on, charged and not far from DH's and the alarm sounded on his.

Hunker down and stay safe, everyone

I got the government alert as I was visiting someone in hospital. All of us on the ward nearly had heart attacks and I was so embarrassed because I couldn’t seem to stop my phone. Then everyone else’s phones began bleeping and shrieking and some people got spoken warnings on their phones. It was insane!

We’ve been told not to travel unnecessarily, all schools and some businesses inc councils will be closed. Some funerals are cancelled or can only have close family attend. Having suffered the aftermath of Storm Arwen, I’d rather be safe than sorry.

Living in a rural area, I’d rather know than be caught out by falling trees and branches as I’m driving along the lanes. Better to be safe than sorry and although being in all the time due to the weather can be boring, at least we are safe.

I always presume it's going to be bad, so delighted when it's not!

Red weather warning here in sw Scotland. Am staying in my static caravan but it is in a fairly sheltered spot so fingers crossed ...

Patrick in Cork has messaged LBC to report that they have 120 kph winds currently.
Not sure what that is in English money but it sounds alarming.
Take care everyone.

I did a big food shop then a big shop in Boots just in case .
So plenty of essentials are at hand .
I can hear the wind whistling and can't sleep .

I wish you all well.
I’m just about to fly home from Sydney and praying the wind has abated by the time we land in the UK early on Saturday 🙏🏻. There have been some tremendous storms here over the past days with trees uprooted and trucks overturned and wild seas. It seems that the weather worldwide is causing problems be it storms or fire.

How is everyone?
The wind has woken me this morning. Trees are swaying.
I'm just south of Edinburgh.

Oopsadaisy1 Fri 24-Jan-25 06:32:56

I’m in Oxfordshire where we have an Amber warning, the winds woke me up at 5 am, we are quite sheltered here so the wind must be strong if I can hear it.

Looks like it’s Ireland and Scotland that will be expecting really bad weather, ok here just some rain.
Will drive to work later rather than cycle, not a fan of arriving wet through.
Enjoy the theatre today RosiesMaw2😃

I was woken at 3.30 am by the wind roaring and the rain sounding like hailstones hitting the windows. I'm in South Gloucestershire - amber warning here. My house is not remote or exposed and the windows were closed so it must have been very noisy to wake me up.

Stay safe, warm and dry everyone.

M0nica Fri 24-Jan-25 07:55:48

In south Oxfordshire, in a single glazed house and I slept through everything, assuming something happened.

Woken to heavy rain and windy but nothing exceptional.

Maggiemaybe Fri 24-Jan-25 07:56:34

Well the blooming wind woke me up just after 4am, and once awake that’s it for me. It’s still at it, no doubt some of the recycling that’s been out awaiting collection since before Christmas’ll need chasing up this morning!

Babs03 Fri 24-Jan-25 07:58:44

Very rainy with gale force winds here but nothing out of the ordinary. The south east doesn’t seem to be at risk. Take care those of you being battered with very high winds today. Did we ever get storms like this years ago??
It feels like we get them so regularly now.

Kilometres to miles- Divide by 8 and times by 5
So 15x5 = 75 mph

That's where I am too - very wild here just now. Neighbour's garden shed has been blown over and looks wrecked. No buses or trains, even many of the shops and supermarkets are closed today. Stay safe everyone.

I'm in Cambridgeshire, close to Cambridge. We are very lucky here. Winds only 37km. I have just got back from walking my elderly dog and we were fine just wet.

I hope everything stays safe and sound.

Cabbie21 Fri 24-Jan-25 08:43:35

It is a bit windy here, that’s all. But I wish the BBC could talk about something other than the weather. Whilst it is crucial in some areas, there is other news.

Grannynannywanny Fri 24-Jan-25 09:00:29

Ireland is currently taking a battering with the entire country in the red zone. Record wind speeds of 113mph were recorded on the west coast of Galway and over half a million homes are without power. It’s sweeping across the country and heading for the red alert areas in Scotland.

Lovetopaint037 Fri 24-Jan-25 09:24:07

Do you remember Michael Fish, the Weather forecaster in the eighties. He famously closed his item with a little joke about a woman who had been concerned about a hurricane on its way. He told her there was nothing to be worried about!!!In the morning I couldn’t get out of my driveway as a tree was across it, no electricity, trees down everywhere, Seven Oaks no longer had seven oaks, tiles off roofs everywhere, looked like the blitz, schools closed everywhere, fences down, cars damaged. Ever since then I have been afraid when I hear wind forecasted. This was in Bromley. I think this is why they don’t take any chances now but as said it is more than likely that things change and hopefully things won’t be bad enough to disrupt arrangements. I have been concerned about my dd and family returning from Sri Lanka sometime yesterday as not sure about the time differences.

Aveline Fri 24-Jan-25 09:39:26

It's scary here. Our flat is wobbling! Ornaments tinkling. Luckily, the cat is sleeping soundly. When he panics I will!

jusnoneed Fri 24-Jan-25 09:50:37

I have washing out on the line, blowing nicely! Sun is showing at the moment.
It did get wet and windy in the small hours but it was dry when I got up just after 6am.
In Dorset, just over the border from Somerset.

Take care up North, hope nobody has any damage to property etc.

Our surgery and Tesco are now closed!
