On a lighter note….we all need it! Here’s a question for you.

What have you purchased since January 1st that you didn’t need?

I’m asking as we’re moving (hopefully) so I am getting rid rather than buying, also I read an article about a woman who didn’t buy anything unnecessary for a year she saved a fortune.

I will go first, an Espa collagen mask and a shirt, both from TKMaxx, I think it came to about £30.

I didn’t need either but I was feeling pretty fed up on a cold drizzly day!

A sparkly top in Matalan's sale. I don't need it, but I like it.
A little shelf thing to under fridge shelves. Utterly useless.
I can't fit it anyway, and there's no room. Luckily it was cheap.
My punishment is to buy nothing unnecessary for a month at least. grin

A pack of Foxes half-coated dark chocolate cookies.........didn't NEED them but they sure tasted good grin

Half price Hotel Chocolat Christmas chocolates. Definitely not needed but they tasted delicious and didn’t last long.

Navy coat

Silk Dress

Silk blouse

Chocolate leather boots

Didn’t need any of these but the sale prices were sooo good.

Nothing, unless you count bird food which I don’t need but my little feathered friends do! And flowers for my parents’ and grandparents’ graves.

NotSpaghetti Thu 23-Jan-25 10:45:31

Crisps!
...and (just before Christmas) I bought a clever gadget I spotted in screwfix that measures screws.... I bought two of these and gave one to my son-in-law. I love it!

If it gives you joy then surely it's necessary
grin

A bar of chocolate that I convinced myself I needed but really didn't.

RosiesMaw2 Thu 23-Jan-25 10:54:35

A Seasalt jumper, down to £39.99 from £115, a shearling jacket also reduced, a lot of Kindle books (I convince myself they’re no more expensive than a coffee or a magazine, usually less and of course take up no space at all)

A joint of pork -half price- which has gone into the freezer , thus taking up useful space 😟😟 My freezer supplies are much ridiculed by my daughters but came in handy in the pandemic when we couldn’t get delivery slots.
But how do you (or I) define “necessary”
Do any of them bring me joy?
Yes 🤗🤗🤗
Job done

A Lino cutting kit (for making prints) that I may never get round to using, being the sort that starts off full of enthusiasm and then falls by the wayside. The box is nice though! At the moment excuses range along the lines of: it’s too cold in the conservatory; I need a bigger table; I need to buy proper paper; I need a special glove to protect my left hand from the cutting tools…… (the weakest of the lot, that one!).

Yes! only yesterday, I bought another handbag shock after contributing to the other thread on handbags with the comment, all my others languish in cupboards, whilst I only use a purse like cross the body bag. Well I bought another such across the body bag, one of those with the wide colourful multi coloured strap that everyone seems to have these days. It's slightly larger than my last one so it can accommodate my glasses I think. I absolutely didn't need it, but I wanted it want and need are not the same thing, as I used to say to my kids I needed it because it's purple, I love purple and that is picked up in the strap along with other vibrant colours.

Why do I buy clothes on line? They usually don’t fit, or if they do they look awful on me and always have to be sent back. The problem is though that shops (usually M&S ) never seem to have my size (I’m quite a common size) and the assistants then offer to order it on line for me. I always say that I could have done that myself. Very frustrating

Some Easter decorations. Don’t need them, could live without them, but I liked them, they’ll cheer the room up at Easter, plus they were heavily discounted (wouldn’t have paid the full price).

A box of No.. 7 potions and lotions down from £85 to £42. The contents individually add up to £136. I wouldn't normally buy anything like this but I thought 'Why not?'. I got my daughter one too.

Another new Cyberjammies nightie and Dressing gown this morning - they were in the sale.

nanna8 Thu 23-Jan-25 11:23:02

A doona cover, a sweater, chocolate, more chocolate.

Margiknot Thu 23-Jan-25 11:34:10

Another pair of warm lined trousers! Also a thermal T shirt both in grey.. I feel the cold and live in these in cold weather. Not needed really as these are extras for when originals ( black) are in the wash! I hope I will show up better in grey than black when out in the dark or rain- or so I convinced myself.!

Grannybags Thu 23-Jan-25 11:34:44

Boots with multi coloured flower design

A pair of green boots

Both very daring for me!

Redhead56 Thu 23-Jan-25 11:43:04

My son and daughter in law bought me a gorgeous black dress with a slight sparkle effect for Christmas from TK Maxx. It is a dress that can be worn any time not just Christmas. I like it so much I bought another one online so I have a spare for future wear.
It sounds extravagant but I have duplicated the odd outfit occasionally. I am generous with family and don’t often treat myself so it’s my treat for the new year.

Babs03 Thu 23-Jan-25 11:47:44

Too many woodland figurines for the top of my grandson’s first birthday cake which is a woodland scene. Ordered some from amazon then thought it wouldn’t be enough so ordered a bigger batch and I now have loads of badgers, foxes, deers, and rabbits etc.
Also felt trees to stick on top of green icing.
Am no ace baker btw will be more like junior bake-off 😆

J52 Thu 23-Jan-25 11:50:40

Cashmere sweater, full price, but it went with things I’ve got!
A 100% cotton oversized shirt, half price ready for spring.

Casdon Thu 23-Jan-25 11:51:14

I’m saving for a new car, hoping to get it in February, so I’ve been very disciplined this month. My only very small extravagance was some single source Amalfi lemon marmalade I bought in a deli. Very costly for what it is, but very delicious. 🍋

Beautiful teal coloured trainers, reduced, from Moshulu. Can’t wait to start wearing them…
