What have you purchased since January 1st that you didn’t need?

I’m asking as we’re moving (hopefully) so I am getting rid rather than buying, also I read an article about a woman who didn’t buy anything unnecessary for a year she saved a fortune.

I will go first, an Espa collagen mask and a shirt, both from TKMaxx, I think it came to about £30.

I didn’t need either but I was feeling pretty fed up on a cold drizzly day!

A White Stuff jumper on line and another one in John Lewis.

Two jigsaws. 500 pieces.

I got a Christmas one last December. Such a pretty festive picture. By the time we'd done it I was ready to hurl it out of the window. I don't have the patience. Mr Louella kindly finished it for me. And he's no jigsaw fan.

So I've got 2 now. I didn't need them. But I have them. Will they get done? Who knows 🤷‍♂️

So not telling...

Two Home magazines, £10 as a treat, but they were complete rubbish, full of pretentious design and expensive adverts.
£ 22,000 for a kitchen cupboard in which to keep your (white) wine.

For a minute I thought you'd bought one! 😁

A roll of rather dramatic high-end wallpaper (giant bamboo & silver trellis pattern). I wasn't even sure I wanted it when I bought it (I was redecorating the shower room and wanted a "feature half-wall"). It's now in my top cupboard, where I keep all the other decorating mistakes I've bought over the years.

A pack of 4 hot cross buns.
It’s too early, my body doesn’t need them but ooh, we enjoyed them so much I might do it again!

Absolutely nothing, but Amazon will have noticed a difference in its bank account. I am suffering from withdrawal symptoms.

Just go on there, you know you want to😄have a browse

I've had toy bargains from Tesco to keep as presents.
Nothing for me.
I'm determined this year that I won't buy on impulse.
We would all be better of if it weren't for internet shopping.
How many of us have bought something online and the next day wish we hadn't and end up sending it back.
If you see something, leave it, think about it and if you really need it, buy the day after.
I will try to take my own advice. smile

Three pairs of warm lined walking trousers. I only meant to buy 2, but the third was reduced to £14.99 and I couldn’t resist.

M0nica Thu 23-Jan-25 14:30:09

Nothing, I live in a rural location and go to the local town and supermarket once a week, with a shopping list. So I rarely see any shops where I could be tempted.

I never browse through shopping sites online unless I am looking to buy something spcific.

The weirdoagain59 are you usually thirsty all the time ? Just in case this is a new thing it’s a red flag for high blood sugar (I’m type 2 diabetic) . I hope you don’t mind me mentioning this but you may need to be checked out

Sago Thu 23-Jan-25 14:27:14

Oh this is great everyone!
I’m feeling very virtuous with my face cream and shirt!
I do normally buy a cashmere jumper every year in the sales but have resisted this year.
My husband treated me to a Holbrook knot so I feel I cannot justify another sweater.

A pair of Teal coloured tights to go with a rarely worn dress; how daft it that when my long black boots would have done the trick. Don't even like tights but have a soft spot for Teal.

TwiceAsNice Thu 23-Jan-25 14:22:32

Some Pyjamas from M&S full price but reasonable .

2 pieces of China that my daughter collects 50% in their sale , usually quite expensive but obviously much cheaper reduced to half price. I’ll put them away for her birthday

Puzzle book for me don’t need it but I love doing it , find it very relaxing and that was cheap too.

Takeaway coffee and pasty for my lunch from our local farm shop. Called in for some milk and treated myself to the rest. We have builders in and I can’t get easily into my kitchen at the moment. That’s my excuse anyway !

I bought a new tile scrubber online for the shower room tiles, how boring is that?I didn’t really need it as I already have one🥴

Oreo Thu 23-Jan-25 14:13:58

Maggiemaybe

I’ve got me some bargains. smile

A No 7 skincare set from Boots to put away, a box of various Christmas chocolate novelties from Hotel Chocolat (supposedly for the grandsons, but I’ve already made an inroad on the penguins), an Audible and an Ancestry subscription, all massively reduced.

Wow, think how much you’ve saved grin

Why are people saying chocolate is not needed?

It is an everyday essential.

Chocolate is addictive so the more you eat the more you want,
Step away from the Snickers!

I’m saving for a new car, hoping to get it in February, so I’ve been very disciplined this month. My only very small extravagance was some single source Amalfi lemon marmalade I bought in a deli. Very costly for what it is, but very delicious. 🍋

It’s funny how we read ahead of ourselves and make sense of a sentence before we finish reading it, cos I saw:I’m saving for a new car hoping to get a Ferrari.😄
I’m a marmalade aficionado so the lemon one sounds great.

Battery operated de-fuzzer from Must Have Ideas which has proved so effective on various sad looking sweaters that I have given one to a friend who is also delighted.

Another drinks bottle! I'm obsessed with metal drinks bottles and the plastic sort with straws dangling from the lid.

I have 3 on my bedside table - water, juice and fizzy pop - which I keep constantly as I'm always thirsty, refilled one for water on my livingroom desk, a fizzy one on my works desk and a trillion in a cupboard at home!

I paid £7.00 for the latest one!

I’ve now thought again and yes I have about 5 of these! Never drink anywhere near enough! Would be good to put some water etc in them!

tanith Thu 23-Jan-25 12:44:30

Some reduced cotton t-towels I have loads but noticed even after a 60* wash some are still stained so I want to replace perfectly usable but stained t-towels with nice new ones. Bonkers really!!

Cossy Thu 23-Jan-25 12:42:59

Too many things to list them all, but top few

Online!

Towels that are too thin and too small
Bags for packing away surplus clothes still in their wrapping (the bags)
A weird cleaning thing I like the look of from “Must Have Ideas” which is still in its box (actually their boxes! I bought 3!)
