What have you purchased since January 1st that you didn’t need?

I’m asking as we’re moving (hopefully) so I am getting rid rather than buying, also I read an article about a woman who didn’t buy anything unnecessary for a year she saved a fortune.

I will go first, an Espa collagen mask and a shirt, both from TKMaxx, I think it came to about £30.

I didn’t need either but I was feeling pretty fed up on a cold drizzly day!

I bought a mattress, smaller than my not very old double bed, telling myself that i can always buy the smaller bed frame when/if i get to move house BUT it just slides around so i caved in & purchased the smaller bed frame as well, which is waiting to be put up- probably a good idea really seeing as my bedroom is the size of a shoebox now.

I also have bought so many things that I don't need, can't even remember them all so here are those that I can remember:
Glass tealight holders artificial ferns on pots (2), book like storage boxes, an ornament (lion head) an Easter decoration...to name but some and all since 1 January!

I thought I'd treat myself to a guitar pickup for when I need amplification. Sadly, I didn't realise it didn't work for nylon strings until after I had modified it to fit so I can't send it back! Fortunately it was only £11!! (DS has steel strings on his guitar!!)

Then, yesterday, Aldi had some lovely yarn in stock, so I thought it would be a great opportunity to stock up for the crochet sunflower blanket design which has been on my radar for a while. Heaven only knows when I'll even start it!!

A visit to a National Trust property gave me the chance to buy some pink and blue garden twine... Well, it was very pretty and gives me joy. Not sure how it will look on my allotment, though!

I'm not even going to mention Kindle!!

3 lego kits for myself. Those eyebrow stampers that are advertised on Facebook and Instagram (they actually work really well) as I basically don't have eyebrows since my cancer treatment 15 years ago.

A Ninja soup maker.

My old, well-used, non-Ninja one just gave up blending, and soup was getting burnt on the base.

No, I don't need a soup maker of any kind, as I have plenty of pans, and two stick blenders.

But Ninja had a sale on, I got cashback via TopCashback, and used my Tesco credit card, so also got Clubcard points. So practically free.

And it looks very at home in Ninja Corner, next to my other Ninja products

A pair of black cowboy boots that called in a siren voice across the wilds of our John Lewis store....

I bought a brightly coloured jacket - I call it my multi-coloured dream coat. I've only worn it twice so far but it's been greatly admired each time . I love it! But did I need it? .......

loopyloo Fri 24-Jan-25 19:15:04

It would be shorter to say what I have bought that I really needed.

Several beautiful summer dresses and a few new tops, as I am going to Australia for my annual three month visit next week and I can’t keep taking the same clothes with me every year, can I?!

I bought some mixed bags of gemstones/crystals as I enjoy trying to identify the different sorts. I have a small collection of them which I love, such as rose quartz, blue lace agate, and jade. What fascinates me is that they are thousands of years old, much older than revered antiques and much cheaper (€2.50 per item from my local garden centre, or special ones online which cost not much more). Many collectors use them for crystal healing etc. about which I confess to being sceptical, but the colours and feel of them are so enchanting, they're woreth every penny. However, do I NEED them?...hmm. as someone said above, if they bring joy, surely they are necessary.

Two tops and pair of pjs, an umbrella and a bobble hat all in the sale and some new make up. Also some very lovely Russell and atwell dark chocolates if anyone is looking for good quality chocolates. It’s my third order from them and they have all been delicious!

Oxtail from the farm shop that has opened in our town centre. I do want to support it, but it worked out expensive and must have cost a fair amount in electricity to cook in the oven for hours.
Delicious though, and appreciated by my overnight guest.
I wanted to see if I could

Redhead56 Sat 25-Jan-25 00:31:47

Oxtail is wonderful cooked in a slow cooker and it’s more economical.

Before the end of Jan I will be buying a box (not cheap) of different coloured yarns to go with a bag of light grey yarn that I recently discovered lurking in the garage. I think I bought it years ago to crochet a cardigan but got bored with it. I've now found a pattern for a blanket I want to try using the coloured yarn as hearts. The more I try to use up my stash, the more yarn I end up buying and so it goes.

Oh dear. I’ve just come across a weird object stuffed in a cupboard, and realised it’s the Hotel Chocolat coffee pod recycler. We haven’t used the coffee pod machine for years, but I thought we might resurrect it if we got one of these, and it was only £3 odd in the sale. And of course then I had to buy all those 75% off chocolate novelties, to make the delivery charge worthwhile…

Marthjolly1 Sat 25-Jan-25 09:40:50

I honestly haven't bought anything yet this year, wanted or unwanted. I'm on a mission for no need - no buy. So far so good. I must be very boring.....

HousePlantQueen Sat 25-Jan-25 10:16:14

What a lovely thread this is! My only purchases so far have been from Vinted and as I sold some stuff as well, I like to see this as exchange rather than purchase. I spent hours perfecting that excuse. Oh, and I bought a new Pyrex jug from Dunelm.

Does the cruise I booked last weekend count? I have categorised it as essential purchase.

Allira Sat 25-Jan-25 10:22:03

I'm planning on buying some new mugs and a few bits and bobs for my new kitchen
No, we don't need them but I do want them.

Yes, a trip to Dunelm is planned - exciting!! 😁
Other shops are nearby too and might get a visit.

Is that the Emma's Hearts blanket?
I made one before Christmas 🙂
Might make another one in a different colourway.

‘Pre-loved’ boots, a bag and a book from Vinted! I’ve also sold some items on there.
A jigsaw from the Barnardo’s shop for my husband.
PJs from Aldi.
Nothing expensive! (I’ve just paid £300+ for a crown at the dentist.😳 An essential, not a luxury!)

NotSpaghetti Sat 25-Jan-25 14:17:01

Ha ha Sago - I assume that was a Holebrook knit?
grin
Knotty question.... but how lovely 😍
