Is this necessary??

Then you are very fortunate. There has already been a lot of damage here in Scotland and it's showing no signs of abating so far. Thinking of everyone who is worried about the storm and hoping everyone stays safe with no damage, or as little as possible.

The weather here in South Oxfordshire has been really quite mellow. I understood that a eal hooley blew through in the night, but I slept though it

Today and yesterday afternoon the sky has been blue an sunny and the weather has been breezy, but that is all.

I did all my ahopping as usual this morning and riving aorund I saw no trees, or fences down or any physical signs of storms.

We have often commented upon this - during a news bulletin a few years ago a reporter stood outside a closed and shuttered facility in the middle of nowhere, in almost total darkness, in order to tell viewers that this was where police had thought someone might be hiding; they weren't, and never had been. What did it cost the licence payers to ship a camera crew and reporter, pointlessly, to offer a non story? I would be interested to know who makes these silly decisions.

I saw a reporter on the news earlier standing on a hill overlooking the harbour of my son’s coastal town. The waves were washing over the 30 feet high sea wall.

I suspect by the time she’d finished talking the local half wits were on their way to the harbour for a selfie.

Here in SW Wales we were awake at 3 o’clock because of the noise of the rain and wind. Bit better now though. Quite sunny but extremely windy. We live quite near the sea and we can hear it thundering .

Why did Sophie Rayworth have to zip over to Washington to report on the inauguration?

Sarah Smith is the main USA reporter for the BBC, and could easily have told us all we needed to know.

So why she and Sophie had to chat to each other, I don’t know.

Hope Sophie flew Economy!

Not only are the reporters in danger but they are setting such a bad example , in the last storm a few months ago we had been warned to stay away from the beach, a Southern TV crew arrived and filmed on the beach and within a few minutes a whole group of boys joined them hoping to get on TV!

He did have the option to say to management ^are you having a laugh^🤷‍♀️

Baggs Fri 24-Jan-25 12:30:29

And people are still stupid.

Baggs Fri 24-Jan-25 12:29:36

A poor man in NI was literally being blown physically several yards whilst reporting.

It's not necessary but it does make the point rather dramatically. And that's why they do it. Shrug.

What also annoys me is the bloke who promotes a competition on ITV in the mornings He was in Cyprus this week. He was in Australia a few weeks ago.

I assume the people entering the competition are inadvertently paying for his 'holidays'

I agree about reporters being sent out, particularly when it’s dangerous or if they are just going to stand about outside some court or other building. There’s a photo on the BBC news app of where a reporter and cameraman in Northern Ireland are in a tunnel looking out on a car park, rather than outside in the wind. At least that shows some sense!

Parsley3 Fri 24-Jan-25 12:07:09

I am of the same mind as Babs about this. Why put a reporter across the road from Buckingham Palace or outside a building? And nobody wants to see a poor soul delivering a piece to camera while being soaked and battered by the weather. Sometimes, the roving reporter is not necessary.
Meanwhile, here in Central Scotland, the wind has picked up to an alarming gust level and is blowing the rain in through my patio doors.

Grammaretto

The plasterer who was going to be working at mine today, is on duty as a part time fire fighter.
He'll have a story to tell.

On our local Facebook page people are asking which shops are open as they've run out of milk. This is a red weather alert area.

Exactly! It's not as if we didn't have any warning of this. I've just seen a post on one local FB group asking if the local card shop is open.

Here in Wales, it’s bright-ish. The air is very still . There are signs on the ground, of an overnight shower. Is this the calm before the storm, I wonder ?..

Where in Wales are you crazyH. I’m in the Beacons, and the wind is really strong here, I just had to swerve on my way into town to avoid a piece of barn roof that had blown into the road, and there are branches everywhere.

The thing is it is surely dangerous and irresponsible. If anything happened to the news team emergency services would have to come out and put their lives in danger.
I just hope the poor sod being blown away in NI is on danger money. 😳

Grammaretto Fri 24-Jan-25 11:47:19

I agree Babs . Have often wondered but it's presumably what we viewers want and expect.
Up to their knees in floodwater, battered by ice and snow, even too near the wildfires.
Mad

Lathyrus3

I was thinking the same thing Babs.

Actually I’ve never understood the News items when they go from the studio announcer to someone outside Downing Street or whatever, in order for them to say what could have just as easily been said in the studio. (Or not bothered with at all!!!!)

I agree with Babs03 too and with your second paragraph Lsthyrus.

NonGrannyMoll Fri 24-Jan-25 11:40:20

They've got to get rid of our licence fee money somehow....

rockgran Fri 24-Jan-25 11:11:48

I've always wondered why they bother.

Terrible weather conditions in certain parts of the UK but as always there are news teams posted to the worst areas with someone having to stand in front of the camera. A poor man in NI was literally being blown physically several yards whilst reporting.
Alerts for people to stay indoors surely apply to news teams as well. I for one will settle for footage taken from indoors of the terrible weather.
😳
