Do you have one? If so, what is it that you like about it?

I have a sample box of perfume from Saltworks. It's clever marketing, but the idea is that you buy sample boxes at varying prices. Each box comes with little vials of scent - ten per box, plus a voucher with a value that depends on how much you paid for the samples - the more you pay, the higher the discount. You try them out and decide which you prefer, and then trade in your voucher for ether a full bottle of your favourite, or a few travel sizes. They make good gifts if you don't know what the recipient would like, and there is a booklet with notes about each of the scents - a bit like wine tasting cards grin.

I'm working through the scents now to see which one to order, and it's got me thinking of favourites over the years. I loved Chanel 19 for a long time, and Jo Malone's Pomegranate Noir, but tried a few different ones that I got as presents or in duty free shops.

I liked the freshness of the 19 when I was younger, and the deeper, woodier notes of the PN later on. I've always liked patchouli/musky/vanilla scents, and am veering towards those with those notes in my sample box.

What about you? Do you stick to a particular scent, or chop and change as you find new ones?

My scent is Pomelo by Jo Loves. The feel good factor is incredible. A tiny squirt lasts all day and has regularly been favourably commented on by friends and strangers alike. Love it.

My other favourite perfumes are Jo Malone dark amber and ginger lily for evening and JM Tuberose Angelica for day.
I also use an oud oil ,Rose Oud .

I love and always have a bottle Chanel Allure on the go but also like Jo Malone perfumes and at the moment using Orange Blossom but had for Christmas and really like the Wood Sage and Sea Salt,
Recently someone recommended the M&as Apothecary range of perfumes, one is supposed to be a dupe of a very very expensive perfume.
Might have a look next time I am in M&S.

It’s the apothecary range called warmth and it’s a copy of Le labo a very expensive range of perfumes . I love it , but it doesn’t last long . However it’s £19 a bottle and I get so many compliments about it .

My all-time favourite is Clinique Wrappings - but it's been discontinued for a few years now, so I have settled on Estee Lauder Private Collection which is very similar. Also loved Dior's Dioressence, which has also recently been discontinued. Still wear Guerlain's Mitsouko, and finally always have a bottle of Chanel No 5 on the go.

My signature scent is basically
Dog, mud, hunger & ruddy frustration with DH! 🤗

White Linen by Estée Lauder for me after having it bought as a gift 30 years ago. Never wear anything else.

TwiceAsNice Sun 26-Jan-25 18:23:37

I alternate several and use perfume every day .

Clinique Happy
Elizabeth Arden Blue Grass
Body Shop White Musk
M&S Florentyna

They are all quite different and I’ve used them all off and on through the most recent years although Blue Grass is an old favourite

Past perfumes when I was much younger have been:
Anais Anais Nina Ricci
Arpege by Lanvin
Rive Gauche by Yves St Laurent

I think you can still buy them all

J52 Sun 26-Jan-25 18:23:16

If only we had smellytext, we could try each others scents.

Beechnut Sun 26-Jan-25 18:08:16

I’ve worn various ones throughout my life. The one I’ve used most over the last ten years is Inis.

Gwyllt Sun 26-Jan-25 17:41:19

Scents provoke strong memories
I met someone I hadn’t seen for many years and they commented I was wearing the same perfume. Which is Estée Lauder “Private Collection “. obviously not a popular one as I don’t think anyone else has mentioned it

Washerwoman Sun 26-Jan-25 17:23:57

I don't like strong perfumes and only use scent when I'm dressed to go out socially. Then often forget !But I still love Eau de Lancome as its very light and fresh. And it makes me feel younger as I've used it since my early 20s.

Yuk Youth Dew...

I have to agree there. I worked in a small office with a woman who seemed to use it by the gallon! That put me off ever trying it. It might be ok in small quantities but I was put off for life.

I've worn Mary Quant's Havoc since I was 17
....it was discontinued years ago and I eeked it out as I thought when this goes probably so will I.....then some 30+ years ago I found 3 bottles at a table top sale....I panicked a bit when the last of them got very low and then found it's still available in India ( through eBay). I told my new DH about not wanting it to run out in case I did too and now he makes sure there are always at least 2 bottles in the drawer...Bless him.

I wear perfume ( and lipstick) every day...as well as Havoc ( very aptly named those who know me say) I wear

Paloma Picasso
Agent Provocateur
Estée Lauder's Azure
and in the past
Nu
Chloe ( box unopened in the drawer for last 30 years).
Charlie
Anaïs Anais

I wore Havoc for years.. and still have some though I find it too heavy now..

JamesandJon33 Sun 26-Jan-25 16:38:21

J52 I absolutely hate Youth Dew. It literally makes me retch. Heavy and cloying.

In my youth it was Anais Anais or Miss Dior

I prefer fresher/citrus scents
Chanel - Cristalle eau verte (must be the citrus eau verte rather than the ordinary Cristalle that smells like a grassy field)
Elizabeth Arden - Eau Fraiche - spring flowers especially lily of the valley
Eau Jeune - Senteurs Fraiches

Used to like the Body Shop Fuji Green Tea but it seems discontinued

J52 Sun 26-Jan-25 15:12:55

Youth Dew smelt like disinfectant on me! I think the acidity or not of your skin alters some perfumes.

Who else remembers Youth Dew? A housemate decades ago used to douse herself in the stuff! 😩

My favourite by far back then was Je Reviens, and I’d still love it - if I could ever find it. I’ve found the cologne on Amazon but not the actual perfume, and it doesn’t smell quite the same.

Don’t remind me about ‘youth dew’. Years ago, my daughter and I worked in the same office as a woman who liberally splashed herself with ‘Youth Dew’. My daughter used to make me laugh when she saw this woman come into the office. ‘Here comes ‘you’ve spewed’, she’d whisper to me. Always creased me up.

B9 Wasn’t it in a little pot?

Crossstitchfan Sun 26-Jan-25 14:53:02

Elizabeth Arden: Blue Grass in winter, it has such a warm sweet smell
Dior: Diorissimo in summer. It is the closest sent I know to the smell of lily-in-the-valley.

I adored Diorissimo and Miss Dior for years but after I had a hysterectomy, they both made me smell revolting! They somehow reacted on me and smelt a bit like cats’ pee! It was unfortunate because my lovely husband had bought me a bottle of each of them for my birthday the month before. I had to give them to my daughter. I have never heard of that happening to anyone else.

B9exchange Sun 26-Jan-25 14:39:40

As a teenager it was Avon Topaze, anyone remember that one?
Now I wear Channel Allure when given some, it is so expensive.

NonGrannyMoll Sun 26-Jan-25 14:22:02

I went through several "favourites" in my teens (I loved Tweed, for some baffling reason, but soon grew out of it!). Finally, aged 23, I settled on Je Reviens by Worth (nose by Maurice Blanchet). I developed a love for France in my 20s but didn't go for Chanel, Dior, Geurlain, etc, just because every other girl and her sister was wearing those at the time! I need cheering up while plodding through the housework, I'll give myself a little dab on the neck pulses. Divine!

We don t have a dog or a cat, visiting houses that do have pets we really notice the scent of the house.

How supercritical can you get - you might not be asked back a second time.
