I've just read that Brian Murphy, aka George from man about the house, has died.

The best sitcoms for me have to be Porridge, Dad’s Army, One Foot in the Grave and Fawlty Towers. All brilliantly written.
Also - the only American comedy I’ve ever liked - Home Improvement.
I’ve never understood Friends. Our daughter loved it. I wonder if it’s an age thing. 🤔

Didn’t really like Benny Hill or Dick Emery.
Was fond of Morecambe and Wise though.

I loved Kate and Allie. Very ahead of it’s time imo.

Another sitcom l have remembered is May to December from the early nineties. I enjoyed the humour and the theme tune was September Song; the music being composed by Kurt Weill. We also enjoyed Desmond's at around the same time, which was set in a West Indian barber's salon in south London.
I agree that many comedies of yesteryear were funnier than today's "comedies," as they did not rely on bad language for laughs. The characters were allowed to develop into rounded people that we grew to know and love. There was often a gentleness that is missing today and we laughed more at the ludicrous situations and foibles of the characters rather than poking fun. I think we were treated as sophisticated adults in the best sitcoms as there were so many levels to the comedy. Why the need for trigger warnings beforehand on these, goodness knows.
There were some dreadful, misogynistic and, to my mind, very silly, unfunny comedy full of innuendos back in the day. I particularly dislike slapstick and it amazes me that Russ Abbott, Benny Hill and Mr. Bean were so popular in their day.

We watch That’s TV.

DrWatson Mon 03-Feb-25 02:36:58

Goodness, some shows on this thread that I've never heard of! Presently the That's TV channel is showing a whole bunch of shows, Just Good Friends (Paul Nicholas, Jan Francis, and some skilled support), Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads, Three Up Two Down, the wonderful Rising Damp, Goodnight Sweetheart, You Rang M'Lord (a weird blend of Hi De Hi & the Indian Army one!), 2point4 children, the dreadful Some Mothers Do ave em, and lots more. Talking Pictures has that gentle comedy with Handl & Pickles (For the Love of Ada), and Going Straight is just starting a re-run on BBC 3 or 4. Drama and Gold channels also have old sitcoms of course.

One obvious point is that most of the old sitcoms are funnier than the present ones?!

Sorry, I got your name wrong Midgey I do apologise.

Foxyferret Sun 02-Feb-25 21:25:54

I just checked, he was Arte Johnson from rowan and Martin. It’s on YouTube.

Foxyferret Sun 02-Feb-25 21:23:25

Midget, I think it was the rowan and martins laugh in. He was dressed I think in a German helmet and used to pop up now and then with verrr interesting.

Babs03 Sun 02-Feb-25 21:19:32

Was it the Kenny Everett show?

midgey Sun 02-Feb-25 21:16:17

Babs03 Sun 02-Feb-25 21:14:21

Just watching Whatever happened to the Likeky lads", still very entertaining now!!

We also watch this, tonight’s ep was all about the wedding.
Know the song 🎵 to it off by heart as well as other catchy sit com songs from that era, my favourite is the song they sing at the beginning of Cheers, know that off by heart as well.

I loved most of them. Benidorm is a little bit special because I had a home there for 20 years, in the next village which is now rather touristy and the next village after that, Altea has remained pretty Spanish. The next part heading north is called Altea Hills, featured in the Cilla black episode.
I loved Rising Damp and had a crush on Don Warrington mainly because of his super posh accent. I now watch him in Death in Paradise.

I would love to know if anyone else remembers 'Chance in a Million'
Brenda Blethyn was a librarian and Simon Callow was her boyfriend I think. Really funny .

Yes I do! I mentioned it further up the thread. I liked it too.

MissAdventure Sun 02-Feb-25 20:26:12

Men behaving badly. smile

Foxyferret Sun 02-Feb-25 19:47:08

Rowan and Martins Laugh In or it could have been the Andy Williams Show, was a sketch every week with a bear knocking on the door, dressed in various disguises, begging for cookies. At the end of the sketch he never got the cookies and ending up collapsing backward.
