A favourite in our family was Ever Decreasing Circles with the wonderful Richard Briers. Loved everything he was in. This series had our DD’s in fits as they thought his character was so like their dad, putting the phone back in the “correct” position every time he passed it! The ironic thing was that their dad was an Army Officer who thought the neighbour, an Army Officer played by Peter Egan was more like him 😄 My girls would be in fits!!

How could I have forgotten to mention Waiting for God? I always said she owed me for all the ideas of mine that she used!! I lived abroad and travelled a great deal, passed my driving test in London and 3 weeks later drove to Yugoslavia, sailed my own boat, went to all sorts of odds and sods places on my own, not nannied by Lonely Planet etc Did my own research and learnt enough basic language for courtesy. So when idiots (usually men!!) look at my white hair (used to be a redhead!) and talk down to me they get quite a shock. The man, who when I was studying a computer, asked me in a patronising tone if I needed him to show me how to switch it on!! was somewhat taken aback when I informed him that I had run a computerised telecommunications system before he was born and would he like me to explain it to him in french, german, portuguese or arabic!!! He looked rather stunned and I stalked off!!

Lyndsey DePaul sang the theme song, I presume. (Or maybe yes, honestly)

Was it a spin off from upstairs downstairs?
Or totally different?

Anyone remember No Honestly - Pauline Collins and John Alderton - in 1974/75?

MissAdventure Sun 02-Feb-25 18:13:35

smile
Oh good!!
All I can really remember is that the lead character seemed to somehow make events happen, as if by magic.

Brush Strokes?
Dexy's Midnight Runners sang the theme tune.
A beautiful, gentle song.

Yes!! Thank you, that's it!

I loved early episodes of Benidorm too . So funny x

Generally I find people do things because they want to. smile
We are allowed to talk about what we want.

Why are people talking about dramas and soaps. I thought the thread was about sitcoms. Ena Sharples, for crying out loud. The best sitcoms were made by the BBC, without a doubt. ITV didn't get a look in. On The Buses and Mind Your Language were garbage. Those two are better than the dreadful Mrs Browns Boys a BBC series. How the mighty has fallen.

All gas and gaiters made my father howl with laughter.

There was one that started with a song playing as a young guy painted a wall, wearing overalls. It was about his life, but can't remember the name!

Ena Sharples, Minnie Caldwell, and Martha Longhurst in the early Corrie episodes reminded me of my great aunts in Oldham. Real Northern matriarchs, tough women who didn't suffer fools gladly. Alan Bennett would bear testimony to the same.
I can recall being scared of my great aunt Mary who constantly sucked cough sweets and told me not to stand on her corns.

Enjoyed many of the above.

There was one which involved garden gnomes coming to life.
If I sat very quietly as a child and not bring attentsion to myself I could sometimes get away with watching it as it was past my bedtime.

Does anyone remember My Wife Next Door? I liked that show a lot. Starred John Alderton and Hannah Gordon.

I liked that one too. A nice gentle comedy.
Also liked 'please sir' with John Alderton.

Wish they would put the old version of Coronation Street with Nora Batty and Minnie Caldwell on again

Ena Sharples, Minnie Caldwell and the sour-faced one I think was Martha Longhurst... A witty twist on Shakespeare's witches ("When shall we three meet again...?"). Ah, they don't take that much trouble in soaps any more.

By chance while having lunch I saw 'Bless this house' was on. We howled from beginning to end!!!

I am currently watching Jam & Jerusalem and really enjoying it. I love Ever Decreasing Circles as well. There are so many old ones that were so good

Musicgirl Sun 02-Feb-25 16:13:14

@Cold, Ever Decreasing Circles is one of my all-time favourite sitcoms. A gentle, grown up comedy, with a cast of stars. Although I enjoyed The Good Life, I actually prefer Richard Briars' character in Ever Decreasing Circles (as, l believe, did he). He portrayed a character with Asperger's Syndrome to a tee and with great sympathy, at a time before there was a name for it.
I also enjoyed Dear John, with its cast of misfits at the 1-2-1 club.

MissAdventure Sun 02-Feb-25 16:04:58

Was there a sit com called 'Nanny'?
She wore a plaid poncho type thing and a hat to match, I seem to think.

Randall and Hopkirk (deceased)

I loved watching the original series of The Larkins starring Peggy Mount and David Kossoff, also Charlie Drake in The Worker.
Wendy Craig and Geoffrey Palmer in Butterflies, Patrick Cargill in Father, Dear Father and Sid James and Diana Coupland in Bless This House to name just a few.

MissAdventure Sun 02-Feb-25 15:40:30

Father dear Father?
I didn't watch it, just remember the name.
