Behaviour of Celtic fans, should it be tolerated?

I was appalled to read this morning about the disgraceful behaviour of Celtic fans at last evenings Aston Villa/Celtic game.

They sang “Lizzie’s in a box” and if you hate the Royal Family clap your hands they also had banners glorifying the man who broke into Buckingham Palace decades ago.

HRH Prince of Wales was present.

This behaviour should not be tolerated, the FA and UEFA should take robust measures.

I would love to see the club severely punished for this, perhaps a big fine and no supporters allowed for so many games.

"Personally I support the Plantagenets" Shock! surely not French usurpers, playing fast and loose with our language, foisting their sewing on us, they can call it the Bayeux tapestry if they like, but it's really just a load of cartoon characters being violent, produced by French women who liked to stitch and bitch, and anyway we've got the "Sewing Bee" where people make nice non boastful garments that don't depict warfare. As if that wasn't bad enough that nosy so and so who called himself the Conqueror, came up with the Doomsday Book so he could spy on everybody and their assets., worse than the Chinese imo, just as well his reign wasn't too long, otherwise he'd have had an Alexa in every household as well as his bloody compilation of how many sheep, goats, groats and wide screen tvs there were throughout the land. Bring back Harold I say that would be one in the eye for the nation.

Very good Terribull.
Remember Ken Dodd's monologue on the BoH. 'Blink it out, H, blink it out'.
Just in passing, a relative at the Celtic/Villa Match last night said that Villa Supporters sang 'God Save the King' to counter the 'Lizzie' song.

Terribull thank you

Terribull 😁

Apparently Harold's mansion, as depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry, has just been discovered at Bosham.

Oh, he really was nosy then? That’s why we call him William The Conk, that explains it.🤭

How interesting, I’ve been to Bosham a couple of times, nearly got washed away by the tide.

Here's the address if you want to try and find the house when next down that way Oreo

Hardrada House,
Battle Field Farm,
Arrowhead Avenue
BishbashBosham

Don't forget to put the post code in your sat nav. AD 1066

Look out for the New King's Head on the corner of Hastings Highway, you'll find it.

I'm trying to remember when the behaviour of away fans resulted in their club being punished. Except in the event of a pitch invasion, I can't think of one.

I know several other gransnetters regularly go to football, but, in the grand scheme of things, I don't see singing a song as a big deal. And clubs with a strong religious or political history, will sing their songs.

But why did he call it Hardrada House after his enemy?
He lived there before he bish bash boshed him.

It was some weird sort of ancient deference towards an enemy Allira, he had intended to build a Stamford Bridge Statue after his victory in that battle to honour his fallen namesake, but he didn't have time to apply for the planning permission given he had to hot foot it down to Hastings, and well after that the rest is history as the saying goes.sad You might be interested to know Godwinsons Global Assets were recorded in The Doomsday Book under the newly formed Conqueror Acquisition Management Corporation.

Both sets of fans have a lot to answer for.
I watched this match and tbf, I did not see or hear any of the banners or songs you have mentioned.

I'm sure there will be some sort of sanctioned handed out.

Well, he'd have been ok if Miss Reeves and Miss Rayner had been in charge of planning, he'd have got planning consent for a statue in a couple of hours and any reluctant newts and bats would have been seen off in a flash.

He really should have worn a pair of goggles then none of this Domesday Acquisitions nonsense would have happened. Greed, plus ça change, plus c'est la meme chose!

It's football. There fans are there not only to support their team but to wind up the opposition team and fans though I thought this latest episode was too much. But what can you do?

Oreo Fri 31-Jan-25 12:59:43

😂

Oreo Fri 31-Jan-25 13:02:06

Fans have been sanctioned for certain chants that are horribly offensive but a general antiRoyal chant am not sure about, however crass those Celtic fans are.

wibblywobblywobblebottom Fri 31-Jan-25 13:43:04

I've been going to football matches for years without a problem. I've heard much worse songs during those years, including about the royal family. Nothing was done, nothing will be done. You read something in a newspaper, you weren't even there!! Pathetic. Don't get your knickers in a knot about something you didn't even witness. If you didn't like it, don't go to football matches. Of course, you don't.

Cateq Fri 31-Jan-25 13:46:59

My DH was a serving police officer in Scotland for 32+ years and came home regularly from being on duty at Ibrox with his coat covered in spit. I was appalled at the level of hatred shown towards the police inside the stadium. I’m not naive to think it did go on in other stadiums, but that strengthened my dislike of football. The sectarian aspect of Scottish football will never go away, it’s totally disgusting.

We took our youngest DS to a Scotland v Italy football match at Hampden then a short time later to a Scotland v Italy 6 nations rugby match at Murreyfield and after about 20 mins or so he turned to us and said rugby supporters were much nicer than football supporters as they don’t use bad language when shouting at the players. Out of the mouths of babes right enough.

When police have to form a line down a street to ensure football fans cannot come into contact with one another and ensure fans of one team don't go into a pub where there are fans of the other I feel there is something seriously wrong. I had professional footballers in my family, brother played for his country. He was 14 years older and me and even at a young age I saw the "glory" given to footballers and grew to despise anything to do with football. It's a lot lot worse nowadays. Wonder what fans would do if their favourite player refused to come out to play at a game due to their despicable behaviour. Players should be leading the way.

I agree. Quite honestly, is this the best use of a large amount of police resources?

missdeke Fri 31-Jan-25 14:22:51

It's absolutely disgraceful. I have not been to many football games, mainly in the 60s when the All Stars 11 were playing, that was mainly so I could see the stars of the day. But the best game I ever went to was an international game between Galatasary and Pogon in Antalya Turkey. There were different ways in for women and men, it was free entry for all women. At the men's gates all the men were searched and any possible weapon , lighters, coins, bpttles and cans etc., were confiscated. You could meet up with your male friends inside and sit together or you could sit in the segregated areas. And lastly the food was cheap and delicious. Couldn't fault it at all.

Lesley60 Fri 31-Jan-25 14:31:30

Absolutely disgusting people with cctv footage they should be recognised and banned for life from football games

Baggs Fri 31-Jan-25 14:44:52

It is not wrong to be anti-monarchy, nor to say so. Yobbishness is another matter but words are not violence.

Anniebach Fri 31-Jan-25 14:51:53

Words can feed violent actions and surly a spoken threat to kill
is violent

Baggs Fri 31-Jan-25 15:01:42

I agree that words can incite violence in some circumstances but the words quoted in the OP just goady.
