Are you an early bird or a night owl?

I tend to get up fairly early but stay in bed and do wordle and quordle whilst having a cuppa, fact is I can’t just jump out of bed bright eyed and bushy tailed in the morning, I need to take my time. So am not really an early bird and never have been. I much prefer staying up late at night to read or watch something on Netflix.
So what do you prefer, early mornings or late nights?

Another night owl here. Married to a lark. I now work evenings which suits me fine. Later this week i have a 5.30/6am start to get to a hospital appt for 8am! eeek

That is brutal. Whenever I have to get up at stupid o’ clock for anything I can’t eat or drink and will fall asleep in the car/train/bus, then generally feel out of sorts for several hours.

Definitely a lark

That's almost the middle of the night!

I’ve always been a night owl, hated mornings, even as a child. Now I get into bed around 11:30 pm, read/Wordle for an hour, sleep for 9 hours solid, so wake at 9:30, but then scroll on phone/read emails for an hour. Listen to PopMaster on Greatest Hits Radio at 10:30 and actually leave my bed at 10:45. Don’t do breakfast, have a brunchy thing around noon. I love being retired so much!

It sounds like you have the perfect balance.

An early bird, Awake anything between 6 and 7. We have a coffee 7ish, read the news online, chat about that, then I'll get on GN, check emails, Whats App, bank account, Ancestry, Duolingo, French first then German, all that can take anything up to 2 hours, I'm definitely not a night owl, I might have been once, not anymore, I'll be off to bed soon, I like to read for a while until I drop off, but I'm often awake again early hours, damn annoying!

My routine is very similar although I live alone. Wake up at 6.45 each morning. Read newspapers online, check accounts, Doulingo/ French practise for 30 minutes or so as off to Paris in three days time, coffee. Meet a friend and take a 30 minute walk then home for breakfast. Each night I'm in bed by 10 and sleep like a log. I always feel full of energy after a night's sleep and raring to go.

I usually go to bed around 10, but am a scrabble fiend, so usually do a couple of games before light out around 11. I usually wake around 3 so might listen to podcast or sleep meditation. I wake around 6.30 to 7, read the news, exercise then breakfast. If it's cold, I can be tempted to stay in bed and scrabble

I am definitely a night owl. I find it very difficult to get going in the morning unless there is somewhere important to be.
I stay up late playing word games on my iPad and then read for at leadt an hour in bed.

Always been a Night Owl, tho until the last child eventually left home was never able to be one. Now I am in a severe swing state with insomnia most nights and today I woke at 5.15 PM,!
Needless to say I live alone.
I will improve but unless I have an appointment almost never awake til c. 11/12 am.
I must be unusual reading of everyone else’s getting up habits!

Night owl, always have been.

Allsaints55 Sun 02-Feb-25 17:09:30

I like to stay up to about 12.30 watching tv . Take makeup off clean teeth etc moisturiser.
Look at news on my phone in bed till 1am then 7 hours sleep . My husband has been snoring in bed since 9pm . 😂Up about 7.30 hes up at 6 x

Night owl, though not as late as when I was younger. Whatever time I go to bed I seem to wake about 7.30 and having scoliosis I get up immediately and sometimes nod off again at the kitchen table. DH sleeps for about ten hours nowadays.

Definitely a night owl now.. especially when it's so cold. Read til about 1 or 2 and then don't get up til 9ish.. my electric blanket makes being in bed very attractive

Definitely a lark!

Having t children ensured we got up early or they wouldn't have made it to school.

We still wake up at 5.30 and have two in bed until about 7.30. We watch Breakfast news, keep in touch with the family, do word games and chat.

We are often in bed by 9 and read for an hour or so.

My goodness! I wouldn’t be impressed if my family rang me around 5.30 to 7.30, much as I love them! My daughters MIL used to wake at about 5am and would text me. I eventually had to ask her not to contact me before 9am.

I'm a night owl seldom in bed before midnight and sleep until 8/9 in the morning. Hubby is seldom awake after 10pm but is up at silly o'clock in the mornings.

I have read somewhere that the night owl/lark tendencies depend on the time one was born.

I think I was born in the afternoon, though, so I'm not sure how that pans out.

Oh that's interesting !

I was born at 2am which could explain my night owl tendencies

Musicgirl Sun 02-Feb-25 16:22:21

I am naturally more of an owl than a lark, but would rather be a lark as I get my best music practise in early rather than late. I would rather do most of my household chores in the morning. The thing I find is that many larks seem to feel superior to owls in real life.

Definitely an early bird, usually up around 7am but 5 o clock is not uncommon. If I'm awake i like get up maybe lay around a bit longer if it's really cold but not too long. I have 2 little furry friends wanting their breakfast.

homefarm Sun 02-Feb-25 15:34:41

Night owl. I do my best work in the evenings when no one distracts me and wants me to do other stuff.

Gingster Sun 02-Feb-25 15:28:52

I’m a bit of both.
Go to bed around 11 even if I’ve been dozing in the chair. Read or I pad for an hour and then up by 7 am for a cuppa and snuggle with the dog.

4allweknow Sun 02-Feb-25 15:15:44

Bit of both. Rarely in bed before 1 am then I read until I feel ready to sleep - about 30/40mins. Can be awake again before six and that's me but not out of bed until near 8 am unless I have to get up earlier. I don't have naps or 40 winks during the day. Wush I could go to be earlier, have tried

missdeke Sun 02-Feb-25 15:13:22

In Summer I am an earlier bird, around 7.30, but Winter definitely a Night Lark and frequently am not up before nine, even then it's a reluctant get out of bed.

NonGrannyMoll Sun 02-Feb-25 14:30:37

Definitely a night owl. I HATE mornings! To be fair, I was trained to be this way from an early age - Dad was a musician, ex was a musician, current DH is a musician. They don't keep normal hours! I love to go out for walks in the dark, I feel more alive then than at any other time. Weirdo...
