Are you an early bird or a night owl?

I tend to get up fairly early but stay in bed and do wordle and quordle whilst having a cuppa, fact is I can’t just jump out of bed bright eyed and bushy tailed in the morning, I need to take my time. So am not really an early bird and never have been. I much prefer staying up late at night to read or watch something on Netflix.
So what do you prefer, early mornings or late nights?

I’m an early bird, wake around 4.30…5ish, take a cup of tea back to bed , get up 6.45 ish then go for a run, that’s the start of my day, early to bed in the week, stay up later at a weekend.

Late nights and late mornings here. Everyone knows not to ring me before 9 a.m. My daughter is exactly like me, despite the fact she has to get up early for work. I worry about her . I never worked, except for a year or two after my divorce, and that was part time. So it was ok for me.
You’re not alone Babs03

I have to say that I also feel most able to sleep in the morning whereas I am rarely sleepy late at night.

I am more like a knackered pigeon at the moment, its been a loooong January and I am afraid the January blues have hit me this week.

Normally I am a lark .

kittylester Thu 30-Jan-25 21:14:26

Definitely a lark!

Having t children ensured we got up early or they wouldn't have made it to school.

We still wake up at 5.30 and have two in bed until about 7.30. We watch Breakfast news, keep in touch with the family, do word games and chat.

We are often in bed by 9 and read for an hour or so.

Am same as you.
Need time to come round in the mornings, which is why being a shift worker suits me.I prefer later hours and differing shifts.

I tend to wake early and feel ready for the day and I want to go to bed earlier than most other people. I read the paper online in the morning while I have a few cups of tea, then a coffee and then my porridge with the radio on. Breakfast is my fave meal of the day.

I'm a lark but a sleepy one. I don't wake till about 7.15 but then I'm energetic & optimistic, in the evenings I'm a sloth.

Grandma70s Thu 30-Jan-25 21:32:28

My brain functions best in the morning, but I don’t get up as early as I used to. I wake early but stay in bed looking at my iPad until about 8.30.

By four or five pm I am starting to flag.:

Calendargirl Thu 30-Jan-25 21:32:52

Definite lark.

Often awake 5ish, waiting to get up about 6.

But ready for bed by 10.

Georgesgran Thu 30-Jan-25 21:42:28

I’m a bit of both, because I only need 4/5 hours sleep - so often up until 1 or 2am but wide awake before 6am. Once I’m up, I’m up and I don’t nap during the day, unless I’m poorly. I have times, when I’m still up at 4 and then just stay up - not worth trekking upstairs!

tanith Thu 30-Jan-25 21:43:09

Usually awake before 6 but I get a cuppa, read my book watch the news in bed till around 8 but in Summer I get up much earlier.

Washerwoman Thu 30-Jan-25 21:44:37

A lark.I didn't used to be but now Iam retired I love mornings.Wake 5 to 6 ish.Have a bath and read with a coffee. Feed the dogs and garden birds.Leisurely breakfast about 8 with crossword and other puzzles. Then I'm set for the day.Bed by 10 at the latest unless we're out socially.I sleep better with this routine.

TerriBull Thu 30-Jan-25 21:55:32

An early bird, Awake anything between 6 and 7. We have a coffee 7ish, read the news online, chat about that, then I'll get on GN, check emails, Whats App, bank account, Ancestry, Duolingo, French first then German, all that can take anything up to 2 hours, I'm definitely not a night owl, I might have been once, not anymore, I'll be off to bed soon, I like to read for a while until I drop off, but I'm often awake again early hours, damn annoying!

I used to have to get up early to get children to school and myself to work but I am not a natural lark so had to go to bed at a reasonable time.

Now I can be a night owl and not a lark unless absolutely necessary.
DH is the opposite!

Allira Thu 30-Jan-25 22:01:35

5 am is the middle of the night 😯

MiniMoon Thu 30-Jan-25 22:03:57

I'm a night owl. I rarely go to bed before 11pm, and then I play word games and read often until 1am. I usually rise about 9am. DH is the opposite. We have separate bedrooms these days.

twiglet77 Thu 30-Jan-25 22:06:46

The only thing I want to do in bed is sleep - not read, or use my phone, definitely not eat or drink. I stir around 7am when I hear the boiler start, then Alexa wakes me with the radio at 8. I never get up earlier if I can avoid it, the bliss of retirement is relief from early starts.

I go to bed around midnight or up to an hour either side, depending whether I fell asleep on the sofa through the evening.

JudyBloom Thu 30-Jan-25 22:16:57

Sometimes I do stay up late, but mostly I am an early bird. On a few occasions I have got up to catch some beautiful sunrises.

jusnoneed Thu 30-Jan-25 22:37:15

Early riser here. I'm usually awake around 5am, lie in bed until about 5.45. Up, shower and first of my two daily coffees around 6am. Go to bed about 10pm and read for a while. Then usually drop off straight away.

Grandyma Thu 30-Jan-25 22:46:17

I’m definitely a night owl. My OH is the opposite. I rarely go to bed before midnight and don’t get up before 9am. My OH is in bed by 10pm and up around 6am.
