Do you leave a light on?

I was remembering when I lived with my grandparents and couldn't have the hall light on to go upstairs but the landing light had to serve both areas.

I don't know if that has given rise to our habits now but....

We always have lots of lights on. We have 2 lamps on the landing which are always on (day and night) and the overhead dining room light is always on. Similarly the light in the glass drinks cupboard in the lounge (!!!)

What about you?

Babs03 Mon 10-Feb-25 12:30:31

We don’t leave lights on when we go to bed but leave living room lights on when we go out anywhere n the evening so it looks like we are in
Btw might just be us and a few others we know but does anyone else call the main living room light ‘the big light?’
That is supposing you have a big light.

Crossstitchfan Mon 10-Feb-25 12:30:43

What an absolute waste of electricity! I think that is pretty irresponsible of you given the state of the planet. Lights must be on at times for safety, but ALL DAY??
I am appalled! Imagine if we all did that! There’d BE no planet!

We have two ‘big lights’ in the living room, and one in every other room, except kitchen and bathroom which have spotlights. But we also have two wall lights in the living room and in the dining room, and two lamps in the living room.

Oh dear, Crosspatchfan!
It was my turn to be berated yesterday, now it's kittylester's

There are ways of asking and answering politely.

Allira Mon 10-Feb-25 12:51:32

No kittylester, they all go off at night. If an animal walks through the garden at midnight the security lights go on and that wakes me up.

Just as I started to type this post, DH said "I'm just going to turn the light on, can't see to do this calculation" 😁

Allira Mon 10-Feb-25 12:52:14

midnight?
Night - could be any time during the night.

Devorgilla Mon 10-Feb-25 12:54:52

I only leave a light on if other people are staying with me and are coming in late. I think it welcomes them home. They know to turn it off when they go to bed.

Astitchintime Mon 10-Feb-25 12:59:48

No lights left on here! Totally unnecessary and a complete waste of energy.........got better things to spend my pension on.

crazyH Mon 10-Feb-25 13:02:50

Yes in the entrance hall, under a picture of Jesus …

Calendargirl Mon 10-Feb-25 13:12:38

Don’t have any lights on in the day.

Only have lights on in the room we are in in the evening.

In the night, we have a plug in light in the hall so I can see to go to the loo in the middle of the night.

Yes, wasteful maybe, but better a few pence on the electricity bill than the hassle if I tripped and broke my leg because I couldn’t see where I was going!

I was perfectly polite! I am absolutely fed up though, of being berated every time I disagree or query something someone has said. I am entitled to my opinion, but the ‘politely critical’ comments of some people in response are putting me off posting. I might just leave you all to it!

To be fair Crossstitchfan use of capitals is considered 'shouty' which doesn't quite fit with 'polite' does it? If you were speaking face to face would you really have shouted those words at kittylester?

No lights during the day unless it's really gloomy weather, my kitchen can be a bit dark then. Only put table lamp on in the sitting room during the evening, that goes on after it's getting dark outside. My son has his bedroom light on during the evening when he's home, he spends most of his time on his computer up there. My OH has a small side table light on in his room if needed. I tend to just switch on my iPad and can easily see enough to get undressed and into bed, then I read on it for a while. When I get up during the night I don't put any lights on, even though we only have downstairs loo.

Roll on brighter evenings when they won't be needed at all.

pascal30 Mon 10-Feb-25 13:40:26

was that a deliberate change of name Allira.. I agree with Crossstitchfan's post but not the need to use capital letters..

we do tend to squander resources in this country.. not nearly as much as companies with large city buildings who leave all the lights on at night.. I've never understood that..

Chocolatelovinggran Mon 10-Feb-25 13:42:47

I prefer darkness, and sleep less well when the grandchildren stay and the landing light is on.
However, lights use very little power, and are unlikely to be gas (?!) , so are likely to use renewable energy sources.

GrannyIvy Mon 10-Feb-25 13:45:18

I don’t leave lights on at night but do like lots of light when I am up and about. My kitchen light is always on unless it is very bright and sunny. Today is very grey and dull so a standard floor lamp is on in the lounge.
When the GC stay I use a night light that comes on if anyone moves into that area

We are all different and everyone should do what they are comfortable with.

JamesandJon33 Mon 10-Feb-25 13:45:22

We very rarely use overhead lights. We have one table lamp on all night on the upstairs landing. In the evening we have three table lamps and one standard lamp on in the living room. Other than that we put various other lights on around the house when needed.

petra Mon 10-Feb-25 13:50:36

Crosspatchfan That’s got to be your best one yet 😂 Keep them coming.

Georgesgran Mon 10-Feb-25 13:51:16

I have quite a dark hall with a gallery landing. I have a table lamp in the hall on (eco bulb) permanently all year, except Summer. I also have dusk to dawn lights placed around the house and PIR security lights.
I’m in the top (dark) corner of my development and feel the expense is worth it.

GrannySomerset Mon 10-Feb-25 13:51:36

I bought a skirting board light when DH was getting up at night and have just kept it - it means that there is just enough light to navigate from bed to bathroom and as it is LED its energy consumption is minimal.

Homestead62 Mon 10-Feb-25 13:52:38

I have two battery operated candles in my hall at night. Started when grandchild stayed, but also our bathroom is very near the stairs so it means we can see where the bathroom is during the night. No worries about not seeing the stairs. I just place one near bedroom door and the other just before the bathroom door. Gives some comfort to grandchild who can see the light from their room when they stay over.

Helenlouise3 Mon 10-Feb-25 13:56:53

W used to leave a small night light on when the children were very small, just so they could come in to us if needs be. Now we switch everything off. If I'm knitting or reading of an evening then I have a small lamp next to me. If we're just watching tv, then we do so in the dark. If we're in a hotel then I leave the bathroom light on, but the door almost shut, for the first night or two until we get used to the layout of our room

NonGrannyMoll Mon 10-Feb-25 13:57:14

Which energy company are you with? I'd like to switch to them as their tariffs are obviously very cheap!
