Do you leave a light on?

I was remembering when I lived with my grandparents and couldn't have the hall light on to go upstairs but the landing light had to serve both areas.

I don't know if that has given rise to our habits now but....

We always have lots of lights on. We have 2 lamps on the landing which are always on (day and night) and the overhead dining room light is always on. Similarly the light in the glass drinks cupboard in the lounge (!!!)

What about you?

Certainly not, I can’t afford to waste electricity. Even have by gradually changed to low wattage LED bulbs, I only switch a light on if I need it. I have motion-sensor USB rechargeable lights in the bathroom and halfway up the stairs.

Yes.
I like my bedroom dark, but there’s always a light in the downstairs landing, under a picture of Jesus

I like total darkness at night. As a child a light was never left on so I’m used to it. I like to watch tv without other lights on. Cosy.

I don’t like the dark and can’t sleep if the room is completely dark.
I have plug in night lights in the hall and upstairs landing so I can see my way to the bathroom in the night. When I stay at my DDs I leave the curtains open a bit. Going away for a weekend soon and will probably take one of the night lights with me.

Hall light on most of the time as the stairs are a bit on the steep side. How those Victorian women managed going up and down and carrying things managed wearing long skirts mystifies me.

I leave a lamp on in the hall for the dog smile

We have a dusk to dawn bulb in the porch, but otherwise all lights to off at night.

My dh ENT consultant advised him to always have a light on at night because of his ear problem.

The only lights on in the daytime are my display cabinet lights and the lights in my kitchen wall cupboards. However, I do leave the stairs light on all night, a legacy from Lynne, she slept in what used to be the front room, didn`t like complete darkness, so the stairs light was always left on all night. And now I don`t like to change things.

Mollygo Sun 23-Mar-25 12:22:56

I don’t leave a light on at home but we have a movement activated light in the bathroom which comes on as soon as we reach the landing.
In a hotel, we often leave a lamp on.

LaCrepescule Sun 23-Mar-25 12:18:06

And my dad was obsessed with switching lights off when no-one was in the room - I’m the same.

LaCrepescule Sun 23-Mar-25 12:15:58

No, pitch black at night for me. And I hate overhead lighting, apart from in the kitchen. As a child it used to drive me nuts when my parents left the landing light on and I could see a chunk of light over my bedroom door. I used to get up and turn it off!

I was locked in the coal cupboard as a very young child to prevent one parent leaving the other and taking me with them. I still can't sleep in complete darkness. I can go to sleep but will wake panicked and disorientated in the night. So unless we have a landing light on and bedroom door open I can't sleep through
I hope sharing this helps stop some people being very judgemental and shaming those who are afraid of the dark.

Using the Internet contributes to global warming, so nobody on here can be sanctimonious about that unless they are very hypocritical. Shame on us all!

🤣🤣🤣

The hall light is on! blush
And the telly.

We have the landing light on at night to make sure no one falls down the stairs on the way to the toilet! However it has a smart bulb connected to Alexa and I can dim it on my phone, or turn it up full on my phone :-) So at night it is just dimmed.

I wouldn't bother, tbh.

Just make sure the scarlet letter on your nightie isn't starting to fray grin

Well I'm about to sign off and go to bed. Should I polish my halo now or when I get up in the morning? grin

Doodledog Sun 16-Feb-25 00:55:35

Absolutely. Nobody has a right to 'shame' others. It's not 1600.

Leaving lights on can be safer and generally more convenient. We all live in different houses and have different priorities. Using the Internet contributes to global warming, so nobody on here can be sanctimonious about that unless they are very hypocritical. Shame on us all!

watermeadow no one is “confessing” to the use of lighting as and when they see fit.
It is not a crime. What’s with all this puritanical none sense!

Allira Sat 15-Feb-25 20:43:39

Low energy light bulbs such as LEDs use far less energy than conventional ones, watermeadow.

We changed all ours a long while ago.

Definitely the lights in the kitchen.

I’m surprised anyone would confess to leaving lights on unnecessarily. It’s not only expensive but you’re burning fuel and contributing to global warming.
Shame on you!

A light uses minimal power. I can monitor our power usage via our solar panels and individual lights make no discernible difference to consumption, unlike cookers or other white goods. One light bulb on overnight isn’t going to break the world.

Indeed.

Perhaps night lights may keep people from breaking Bones.

I can find my way to the loo in the dark with my eyes shut so don’t bother with leaving a light on. Problems arise when on holiday…😂

Until someone leaves a slipper in your path, or a piece of carpet comes unstuck that you didn't notice earlier. At my age one fall could break a hip and reduce my mobility forever. I'm not taking any risks, the cost is too great.

If you feel vulnerable with your walking surely you wouldn’t leave slippers ( or anything) in your pathways. The same goes with carpet coming up. Duck tape on it asap until it can be secured properly.

Someone else might, though. I tend to hold on to things as I edge my way round to the loo in the night, having stubbed my toe really badly on the door jamb.

I've had an accident that landed me in hospital because someone else left something in the direct path. It wasn't dark, in fact, but this was directly behind a door.
The hotel denied all knowledge and I was not in any state to take photos.
