If you have children or elderly people living with you , a light at night is a necessity in my opinion. Accidents can be lethal and costly.

I was remembering when I lived with my grandparents and couldn't have the hall light on to go upstairs but the landing light had to serve both areas.
I don't know if that has given rise to our habits now but....
We always have lots of lights on. We have 2 lamps on the landing which are always on (day and night) and the overhead dining room light is always on. Similarly the light in the glass drinks cupboard in the lounge (!!!)
What about you?

I’m surprised anyone would confess to leaving lights on unnecessarily. It’s not only expensive but you’re burning fuel and contributing to global warming.
Shame on you!
Following up my own post on 11/02, I’ve now installed two motion activated bulbs in the hall and landing lights and am really pleased with them. They don’t come on when there’s enough day light, though my cats do sometimes trigger them.
Thanks for the tip.

I can find my way to the loo in the dark with my eyes shut so don’t bother with leaving a light on. Problems arise when on holiday…😂
Until someone leaves a slipper in your path, or a piece of carpet comes unstuck that you didn't notice earlier. At my age one fall could break a hip and reduce my mobility forever. I'm not taking any risks, the cost is too great.
Wouldn’t dream of leaving lights on when I’m asleep. Also hate any form of overhead lighting at any time, apart from kitchen/bedroom.
No, pitch black for me, but my adult daughters both have a light on in their room.
I think folks should put whatever lights on that they want or need.
There are so many different ways to illuminate our lives and homes that simply were not available when I was a kid.
A world away from the naked stark (unshaded) 60 watt or more ceiling lights that burned my eyeballs while my two elder (working) sisters argued over who nicked whose new tights at 7 am!… but oh the peace that descended when the front door closed behind them😴 until a more respectable 8 o’clock.

I still have memories of being scared stiff of the Humpty-back monster, that I was told by my Gran lived in the dark spaces in the hall! I always have to have a light on in the hall to this day! You have to be careful!
I’m also afraid of the dark and have been as long as I can remember. I have a low light on in my bedroom over night and if I get up in the night the bedroom light goes on and that lights the hall as well.
I have a light in the entrance hall, under the picture of Jesus. It also lights up the stairs…
I like to sleep in the dark, but I get up a couple of times in the night, and due to the high cost of electricity, I have put a motion sensor light onto the wall of my triple sliding door wardrobe.. I leave the end door open slightly, so if I sit up in bed the light comes on and shines into the room sufficiently well to guide me to the door, and in the hall I have yet another motion sensor light, and again in the bathroom... . I prefer to use those that take batteries because they last for months before needing changing or charging if using rechargeables, . USB ones are available and I have some of those, but they do need charging every couple of days, which is a bit of a nuisance
Yes, Babs03, always called the living room light 'the big light' as a child and still do now. Much to my husbands amusement
I remember a comedian cracking a joke about everyone leaving a hall light on when they went out in the evening as if the whole family gathered in the hall all night😁
We have a light on over the stairs at night because they are quite steep and narrow.

I’m afraid of the dark too, and I’m also afraid that this house looks like an ocean-going liner after dark. Porch light left on if we go out as otherwise it takes DH an hour and a half to find the right key. Landing light on all night.
As for the planet, we don’t have an electric car, is there no moral high ground change out of that? You don’t have an electric car? Isn’t an electric car a lot more eco friendly than a petrol or diesel one?
Not if you have to scrap a petrol/diesel car to buy one. I intend to keep my Yaris going for as long as possible but limit driving as much as possible.
No lights on unless I have to get up during the night. A street light sheds a little light into my bedroom, so it’s never totally dark. When it’s dark outside later in the day, I like bright lights in the living room and kitchen. Strange to think that many families watched tv in their living room with no light on at one time. I worry about leaving any kind of light on when away for any length of time - in case of fire. No reason, I think it’s an age thing. We used to go away for two weeks at a time with a lamp on a timer, and never gave it a second thought. No smoke or burglar alarms then either.
We leave a light on in the back bedroom to make it look as if someone's in there.
It makes us feel safer during the night following an increase in break-ins around here. 🤥
Just leave the bathroom light on at night with the door slightly ajar so DH can see where he's going - we have 3 steps down, a tiny half landing & 3 to go up between our room & the bathroom so we don't want any accidents! The house is around 500 years old & very quirky. Certainly would never leave any other lights on, why would you? You don't need light when you're asleep!!

I’m surprised that so many people think it’s a waste of electricity to leave a light on. I would think when most bulbs are energy saving it would be such a small amount it wouldn’t even be noticeable. I leave the landing light on every night. If thieves are around they’re going to go into houses that are in darkness.
i like a lamp if watching TV but like the dark when i want to go to bed. I find the dark reassuring and comforting.
My husband was an electrical engineer so absolutely wouldn’t waste electricity by leaving lights on unnecessarily. We live in a secluded area next to woods, no passing traffic or street lighting so at night we have a child’s plug in nightlight that give us enough light to find our way to the bathroom during the night.
We have little night lights plugged in which only come on when the room is dark. Perfect for finding your way to the bathroom in the middle of the night without having to put ‘big light on. lol. Also works well for guests too.
When we've had long term visitors a light was on in upstairs hall. My brother is quite fit, very tall - I'd not want him to fall.
