Do you leave a light on?

We live in a first floor flat and our hall which connects the living room/dining/kitchen area to the bedrooms and bathroom are internal. The bathroom and our en-suite are also internal. Our solution was to have battery operated, motion sensor lights in the hall and both bathrooms.

I don’t use what my mother called the big light in our living room, as we have table lamps which go on when the light fades and it’s difficult to read. I have a motion sensor light in the hall. As we often have our DGDs to stay and it’s useful if they need the loo after bedtime. We put the cooker hood light after we’ve had dinner and cleaned up as our back garden is quite dark and I also need it as my eyesight can get a bit blurred if I’m tired and I’ve missed the step down into the kitchen too often. We don’t have any lights on upstairs as we no longer use the upstairs rooms. OurAC’s seem to think it’s a storage area for all their things.

I get up in the dark and virtually never turn a light on until it is essential as I pull the curtains shortly before bedtime. Never a light at night. Too many years at sea when damaging one’s night vision before going on watch on the Bridge was disastrous

I have motion sensor lights on the landing and stairs for bathroom visits at night. I am reminded to turn off and unplug the electric blanket as it has lights on the control that are very bright.

Me too. Have to have a very low night light in the hallway as I like others visit the loo several times at night. We have only LED lights and a LED light in the garden so the garden is always well lit. Out front we have a light that comes on if anyone comes near the car, our neighbour is the same as one year we had unwanted visitors and after that the lights went up on both houses.

I’m afraid of the dark too, and I’m also afraid that this house looks like an ocean-going liner after dark. Porch light left on if we go out as otherwise it takes DH an hour and a half to find the right key. Landing light on all night.
As for the planet, we don’t have an electric car, is there no moral high ground change out of that?

None are left on when I go to bed. Some of the lights are on timers great when I'm away.

Having fallen downstairs in the dark and broken my arm (could’ve been my neck) some years ago, I make no apologies for my overnight lights.
According to Octopus my overnight useage after I’ve gone to bed is between 1 and 2 pence an hour and that includes the outdoor lights, hall light and 3 fridge/freezers etc.

We don't leave lights on at night, but we have a sensor night light in the bathroom, which is very handy if you need a visit in the middle of the night. Enough light to see your way, but not too bright so as it would wake you up.

though our stairs are in the lounge we still leave landing light on all evening no lights when we go to bed though
our house is quite dark so have the lounge and kitchen light on from when we get up until we go to bed. I must admit if we go out then I will turn the lights off but partner just ignores them
I do remember at home years ago always had the hall light on in the evening but if you went upstairs soon as you were you had to turn off light. great stumbling about in the dark trying to find the loo or your bedroom! wonder we did not fall down the stairs!
hall light had to stay on if we went out in the evening sure it was a major burglar put off!

Interesting to read of people’s habits. We don’t have overnight lights here as dh claims he can’t sleep if there’s a light on. I’ve noted that several of you have mentioned motion-activated lights. Could someone do a link to the kind of thing they mean? We have motion activated outdoor lights but I’m not sure what indoor ones are.

I’ve always been afraid of the dark Still am at 67.
So I have a small light on in my dressing room that shines into my bedroom I don’t like pitch black

we have motion sensor light bulbs in normal light fittings. Just search motion sensor light bulbs. They are cheap to buy and last a long time

I leave lights on dim and one on the upstairs landing but only when I go out and I'm not coming back until its dark. I dont like coming into a dark house on my own. Also I like to think that and burglars might think someone is in and not bother.
At night all my lights are out but there is a light from my extension lead where my lamp and phone charger are. Plus there's a street light that shines into my bathroom that is never off as its on the corner of a main road.

But on the other hand, if an intruder got in, you've made it light for them to easily see around. If it's dark, you can find your way around as you know your own house. Just saying!

Hopefully, my burglar alarm system would wake me and scare the living daylights out of them meddijess after the PIR outdoor lights had come on like St James’s Park!

I keep a dim light on over the stairs for safety reasons in case I need to leave my bedroom in the night. Those of you who are a bit worried about electric costs, be aware that today's LED bulbs are very frugal, especially if you choose the lowest wattage available which should easily be bright enough for night time use.

No lights left on overnight, but we sleep with bedroom curtains wide open. One reason I couldn't sleep in a bungalow.
I love to watch the sky just before I sleep, seeing the moon and stars on a clear night.

Thank you, Notthecatsmother. I’ll look for those. I do have a lightbulb in a lamp in the sittingroom which I can control from my phone but I hadn’t known about the motion bulbs.

I’m afraid of the dark so always have the landing light on. I start to panic if it’s pitch black.

I suffer from claustrophobia, it’s mild but I start to panic if it’s pitch black indoors. Outside I can cope, it’s being enclosed I can’t stand. Oddly had no problems travelling to work by tube for many years!

We have a light on the landing on all the time as we have no window.
We leave a light on downstairs for our dog overnight.

We leave a plug in light on on the landing for visitors as there are three steps down followed by three steps up between bedroom and bathroom. The joys of old houses

When we've had long term visitors a light was on in upstairs hall. My brother is quite fit, very tall - I'd not want him to fall.
