Valentine’s’ theme at Playgroup!

Am I alone in thinking this is a tad ridiculous? One of the local playgroups is advertising a Valentine’s Day them for their activities on Friday.
I can only think it must be the sort of group where the Mums stay with their children and the craft , songs etc are for the Mums’ benefit. It is hardly relevant for a 2 year old.

Theme, not them

Theme, not them

The apostrophes were OK, then?

BigBertha1 Tue 11-Feb-25 14:59:30

Sigh!

Cabbie21 Tue 11-Feb-25 15:00:08

?

NonGrannyMoll, please explain.

I think a lot of stuff that's pushed at kids now isn't particularly appropriate. My personal list:
Make-up for little girls
Pink, pink and more pink for little girls
Provocative clothing for girls under the age of consent
Piercings/tattoos for any child under the age of consent
Hints at romance (eg, Valentine's Day) for pre-teens
Hallowe'en without telling them exactly what they're celebrating
And so forth... Children are not "small people"! We're supposed to be the adults, for crying out loud!

This is not Pedants’ Corner. Yes I can see there is an error in the title, but what about the topic? Those apostrophes are correct. Any thoughts on the topic, NotGrannyMoll?

NonGrannyMoll, please explain.

Look at the heading.

Rogue apostrophe detected!

I agree with all the items on your list, NonGrannyMoll. Thank you.

What is your objection Cabbie.

I think it’s harmless. My 3 year old DGS2 has already made a Valentine card for his Mummy at Nursery. It gives the little ones a craft/making task, no different from the Easter, Mothers/Fathers Day, or Christmas cards they make and bring home.

DGS1 (7) has a Valentine Ball for an hour after school - the £2 a ticket is going towards school funds.

On no, apostrophe police!
Good grief

Rula Tue 11-Feb-25 15:11:45

As for the topic I can't see any problem.

They'll probably be crafting hearts and flowers 💐

At that age they won't suddenly start thinking of romance.

They'll be fine

I've addressed the topic (sent 15 seconds before you sent this comment). My first comment was meant to be light-hearted - maybe I should have added a wink, so I apologise for any offence caused. Please don't be so defensive.

I worked in nurseries and playgroup over 25 years ago, we always had this as a theme. We made cards to send home, talked about the colours pink and red, made buns/cakes/biscuits

Really don't see the harm

OldFrill Tue 11-Feb-25 15:42:32

Super, sure my children did this decades ago.

loopyloo Tue 11-Feb-25 15:42:52

Only 1 apostrophe's wrong surely?

Yes, mine did too.

ViceVersa Tue 11-Feb-25 15:50:37

And what 'children' are getting tattoos?

escaped Tue 11-Feb-25 16:02:06

Agree with many of you.
I think I could get a lot of mileage out of a themed Valentine's Day for little kids - Art, Singing, biscuit making etc. They don't need to understand the origins of the day, just to have fun with sensory activities. ❤️

Yes!

One little girl I looked after years ago used to scribble all over her arms in biro, given half a chance.
She was copying her mummy's tattoos... 🤷

No offence taken, NonGrannyMoll. You and I seem to be in agreement on the topic! We are in the minority.
