Any more than 25 December is Santa Claus Day, that movable date in March/April,Chocolate Egg Day or Hot Cross Bun month.
It’s Shrove Tuesday

My vicar friend’s church is holding a Pancake Party today, not a Shrove Tuesday one. grin

I prefer caster sugar and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice on mine!

eazybee Tue 04-Mar-25 17:44:09

It is Shrove Tuesday and I always make pancakes, the batter is mixed already And I do try to give up sugar for Lent.

A friend of mine came round just now. She has just gone home to make her pancakes. Crepe de Chine , she said with chocolate sauce !!

Oops!
I hope she never tries to make a dress out of Crepes Suzette!

merlot, they were gf but I've used the recipe loads of times. I was using a new pan - I'll blame that.grin

If the flipping photo facility were working on GN, I'd show you mine from just now!

It's always been Pancake Day in this house!

And ours !

Three pancakes each with lemon juice and sugar here. Always brings back childhood memories of my Mum tossing pancakes in the kitchen with the dog waiting patiently for one to drop. They never did smile. My parents called it pancake day, so did Mr C’s church attending Ma as do we.

Never use a new pan for pancakes!

Three each, mi e with lemon and sugar and DH's with marmalade 🤔 every one tossed and caught!

Well, darn it, I forgot to buy a lemon so couldn't be bothered to make the pancakes. Does it matter if I make them a day or two late?

SueDonim Tue 04-Mar-25 23:53:10

We had pancakes this evening. Dh makes them while I get on with other things. Imagine my joy when I went to clear up afterwards and discovered that dh had accidentally left a pancake in the pan! Reader, I ate it. grin

No dinner this evening, just pancakes. I had mine with maple syrup, blueberries and Greek yogurt. DH had savoury ones with ham and peppers.

Can't remember the last time I made pan cakes on pan cake day. I haven't owned a frying pan for years . Much rather have Yorkshire pudding. Same mix different way of cooking but tastes so different. 😋

Mine were the lightest ever this year - and even the first one was perfect!
😇

We had stuffed pancakes first - cheesy garlic spinach baked in a slowly cooked tomato sauce. Yum!

Then honey and lemon ones... 🥞 🍯 🍋
...too full for any other toppings!

I wonder if they were so light and so perfect because I used 00 flour this year?
Maybe that's worth a go for Yourkshire puddings?

Ooh you little 😈 SueDonim 🤣.

Mr PG makes ours and he always eats the first one - he claims it sticks and is too misshapen to serve…🤨

It could be that you have too much butter or oil in the pan with the first attempt. Less is more.

escaped Wed 05-Mar-25 07:20:13

Though I'm guessing * lMrPantglas2* is fibbing a bit!

tanith Wed 05-Mar-25 07:31:17

Well I cooked 4 but ate 3 with sugar and lemon the first one always sticks for some reason. My neighbour text me saying got some spare milk? He does this every year as he doesn’t use milk much. After I said for pancakes? Yes, he was at the door looking sheepish!

V3ra Wed 05-Mar-25 07:46:41

We had ours made with wholemeal flour, served with cottage cheese, strawberries and mango. Very nice too 😋

Ash Wednesday, Lent starts today.sad

I always eat the test pancake while stood at the hob. It’s quality control.
I follow Delias’ recipe and I like nice thin ones not those fluffy/rubbery ones.

Marydoll Wed 05-Mar-25 08:58:18

We had Scotch pancakes for breakfast yesterday (DGD was here) and savoury crêpes for dinner. Overkill, perhaps?

Witzend Wed 05-Mar-25 08:58:48

For the big parties we used to throw decades ago, I used to make a lot of pancakes, filled with prawns in a cheese sauce and rolled up, packed together in a big dish with more cheese sauce on top. They used to go down extremely well.

Just couldn’t be bothered now, but I had help in the house (abroad) then. Someone to do all the clearing up - those were the days!

@#£%&%£#@

Here in Germany the traditional food on Ash Wednesday is pickled herrings, nice with potato salad or just potatoes (boiled in their skins). This is because it's not just Shrove Tuesday which is celebrated but it's traditionally a huge party of drinking and debauchery which goes from the Thursday for 6 days.

Any excuse will do JackyB 😀
