Just seen this.

Her husband of 60 or so years.

Carl Dean, 82.

He was the inspiration for her hit ‘Jolene’, apparently, about a bank teller who fancied him.

A very private marriage out of the public spotlight, but I hope it was a happy one.

Well said Grandmabatty. I think only one person has been indulging in tasteless gossip, but at a time like this that’s one too many.

Thanks Grandmadinosaur

That’s exactly what I thought.

I’ve asked for the thread to be removed though, as it’s deemed of no interest.

It’s of no interest to that particular poster perhaps. That doesn’t mean it isn’t of interest to others, so I hope your post stays active.
It’s sad news.

I just read it on Facebook and it saddened me. I believe that she is having problems with the government as they have withdrawn their contribution to her book charity. I have a lot of respect for her.

They stayed married but Dolly did her own thing throughout the relationship, its well known she had other relationships as well as a very tolerant husband.

Is it? I didn’t know that, and to be honest, question it as fact.

A lady who has done so much to help people less fortunate; she seems wise, kind, intelligent and has a sharp business mind. I am sorry to read of her husband's death as she spoke so positively about him, and their happiness together.

rafichagran Tue 04-Mar-25 14:43:02

The big news channels deemed it news, and Dolly is a big star, the tasteless gossip by one poster should be ignored.
Dolly Parton stated they had 60 happy years, anything else is irrelevant. Respect should be shown on this thread, as some people like Dolly and her music and want to pass in their respects.

I’ve just been pottering about in the garden thinking about this. How many songs have been knowingly written about a particular person? Patti Boyd had several, Layla, the one that George Harrison wrote about her ( can’t remember what it’s called). Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands; Sarah, Bob Dylan’s wife ( what I’d give to have someone write a song like that about me envy).Mind you, none of them ended well. And how many songs have women written about men, in which we know exactly who they’re referring to? Most have been written in an anonymous way after a break up. So to have one of the best songs ever to be written about you in such a positive way and for that relationship to have survived so many years is pretty special. I do wonder who Jolene actually was, though hmm.

Calendargirl Tue 04-Mar-25 16:27:10

The George Harrison one he wrote for Patti Boyd was ‘Wonderful Tonight’.

And John Denver’s ‘Annie’s Song’.

Always wondered what it would be like to have a song written for you?

Well, no one will ever write one for me.

sad

NotAGran55 Tue 04-Mar-25 16:33:59

Eric Clapton wrote Wonderful Tonight, not George Harrison.
Eric also wrote Bell Bottom Blues for Pattie.

The one I’m most envious of was when I read about the girl Syd Barrett’s ‘ See Emily Play’ was written about. I loved him so much.

There is, of course, Carly Simon’s ‘ You’re so Vain’. I saw a programme on Sky Arts the other night explaining who it was written about but, it was late at night and I’ve forgotten ( I don’t think it was Warren Beatty).

Jaxjacky Tue 04-Mar-25 16:56:47

Clapton wrote Tears in Heaven for his 4 year old son

She always absolutely denied it.

Thanks NotAGran for pointing out my daft mistake.

I meant Eric, of course, not George,

Duh!

(Getting mixed up as of course Patti was the ‘amour’ of both of them).

We seem rather short of good people in 2025, lies, broken promises, not caring for vulnerable folk etc, but Dolly, whose dad couldn't read, www.openculture.com/2022/08/dolly-partons-imagination-library-has-given-away-186-million-free-books-to-kids.html
started working on illiteracy in her home area, then state, until it went international. And her foundation sends out a million age-appropriate books every month.
Imo she's an inspiration. So yes, I'm sorry when sad things happen to good people

George’s beautiful ode to Pattie was ‘ Something’

I am sad to hear about the death of Dolly's husband. 60 years is a long time! I think people are interested because Dolly is such an interesting woman and loved by many. She has given £1000' s to charity. The gossip about Dolly is disrespectful at this sad time.

In an interview some time ok. Dolly always credited her love for her husband and the bond they shared plus their faith for a long and happy marriage but also about the sadness of not being able to have children . But she said it brought them closer together .

Mt61 Tue 04-Mar-25 18:38:47

My mum has just lost my dad after a wonderful 60 yr marriage- plenty of people commented on their wonderful marriage, which gave great comfort to my mum.. Sounds like Dolly had the same wonderful marriage from some of the interviews she gave.

jenpax Tue 04-Mar-25 19:04:17

I only know of what I have read, but her charitable work and down to earth attitude has endeared her to me. She came from a huge very poor family and has worked her socks off to not only help her large family of nieces and nephews but a vast number of other people. I love that every child in het state starts school with a gift of a book from her charitable foundation because she knows how important education is in lifting people out of poverty

Why bring that into the conversation 🤷‍♀️

I have no idea whether she had other relationships but I do know this is not the time or place to speak as you have David. Have some respect.

I agree.

I do like Dolly 🙂
He was always there for her but did have Alzheimer's in his final years. Condolences to Dolly.

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 04-Mar-25 20:28:23

She wrote many fine songs , too : I love" Love is Like a Butterfly ".

MayBee70 Tue 04-Mar-25 21:26:54

She wrote I Will Always Love You too.
