Just seen this.

Her husband of 60 or so years.

Carl Dean, 82.

He was the inspiration for her hit ‘Jolene’, apparently, about a bank teller who fancied him.

A very private marriage out of the public spotlight, but I hope it was a happy one.

People do, especially after 60 year marriages.
He wasn’t a public figure so why should this be of any interest to anybody other than we may be (and I am) sorry to hear it.

I think Dolly is a much loved entertainer and people will feel for her losing her husband. I for one was sorry to read this news today.

Thanks Grandmadinosaur

That’s exactly what I thought.

I’ve asked for the thread to be removed though, as it’s deemed of no interest.

That’s just one persons opinion Calendargirl

No need to have the thread removed. It will fizzle out if nobody is interested.

It was a long and happy marriage it seems so Dolly has my condolences.

Sixty years together must be celebrated, surely- whoever the couple.
I have huge admiration and affection for Dolly Parton, who uses her wealth to good effect.

Grandmabatty Tue 04-Mar-25 08:08:37

It is very sad for Dolly and her wider family. A long time together.

M0nica Tue 04-Mar-25 08:40:26

I know Dolly Parton, only as the news portrays her. I thought this was both a sad and wonderful story.

Sad for Dolly Parton and those near to both her and her husband. But also wonderful at a time when so many show biz marriages seem to be over before they begin, that they should be together for 60 years, during which he continued earning his living in his very different day job, never seeking to be famous himself, even if only as DP's husband.

I am sure much of her success must lie with that normal stable husband back home, laying tarmac and paving slabs, who was always there for her, the person she really was, under the showbiz shell.

I feel sad for anyone losing a much loved husband after 60 years of marriage.

I hope in time that fond memories will bring Dolly much comfort.

I am minded of a phrase that brings me comfort grief is the price we pay for having loved

Her husband may not be a public figure but Dolly certainly is. Even people who don't especially like her music often appreciate what a genuinely warm, caring person she is. Many, like me, will feel for her in her grief.

Jaxjacky Tue 04-Mar-25 08:47:22

Described well MOnica although not a great fan of her music, I quietly admired her attitude and in that world of glitz respected the longevity of their marriage

David49 Tue 04-Mar-25 08:54:13

They stayed married but Dolly did her own thing throughout the relationship, its well known she had other relationships as well as a very tolerant husband.

Jane43 Tue 04-Mar-25 09:02:52

We celebrated our 60th wedding anniversary last Thursday and my DH is 82 in May so I feel very sad for Dolly, I’m not particularly a fan of her music but I love what she does for charity.

Barleyfields Tue 04-Mar-25 09:03:04

I have no idea whether she had other relationships but I do know this is not the time or place to speak as you have David. Have some respect.

Others are lauding a faithful relationship, on his part yes not hers.

Smileless2012 Tue 04-Mar-25 09:31:53

The only one to mention a faithful relationship is you David. They were married for 60 years and it obviously worked for them both.

She has said that no words can describe the love they shared.

Rosie51 Tue 04-Mar-25 09:34:04

David49 you have no idea of the faithfulness of either party. I think what is being lauded is a 60 year marriage, and the inevitable grief when one partner dies. Would you voice such opinions to anyone's face in real life, how disdainful that would be?

Babs03 Tue 04-Mar-25 09:35:24

No marriage is the same, but if it works it works, and after sixty years it certainly must have worked for them.
Sad that as well as losing siblings over the past few years Dolly has now lost her husband.

Such sad news.

Primrose53 Tue 04-Mar-25 10:18:44

I think it’s very sad. I saw her talking on TV a while back about how she left home to find fame as a singer aged 16. She got off a bus at some big place and was standing there wondering which way to go when her husband to be drove up and asked her if she was lost. He took her under his wing and the rest is history.

Indigo8 Tue 04-Mar-25 10:29:57

Why is there any need to get minty about a famous celebrity losing her husband of 60 years? Of course it is news, she is a big star.

She deserves sympathy just like anyone else.

Shinamae Tue 04-Mar-25 10:34:28

Apparently, she met him outside the laundromat when she first arrived in Nashville when she was 18 years old…..
I feel very sad for her…💐💐💐

henetha Tue 04-Mar-25 10:39:41

I have great respect for Dolly, a good person and a great entertainer. I'm sad for her losing her husband of 60 years.

Grandmabatty Tue 04-Mar-25 10:41:47

I find the prurient gossip about Dolly by a few on here inappropriate and distasteful. She's lost her husband and is presumably very sad.
