Unsung Australian hero

From The Times this morning
James Harrison, who was 88, gave blood more than a thousand times to protect infants from a potentially fatal condition — despite his fear of needles

An Australian blood donor celebrated for helping to save the lives of more than two million babies has died at the age of 88
James Harrison died in his sleep at a nursing home in New South Wales on February 17. Known as the man with the golden arm, his blood contained a rare antibody known as Anti-D
It is used to make a treatment given to pregnant mothers whose own blood is at risk of attacking their unborn babies — a potentially fatal condition known as Rhesus disease or haemolytic disease of the foetus and newborn (HDFN)
I am pretty sure this was why my mother never went on to have more children after her miscarriage when I was about 3.
Had anybody ever heard about him? I am glad he has his recognition at last.

He was awarded The Medal of the Order of Australia in 1999, so was acknowledged for the wonderful gift he gave so many, a selfless man

I hadn't heard of him but perhaps I should have done. What a hero!

Many years ago I was found to be RhNeg when I was pregnant with my 2nd child, the first having been miscarried. However, the Consultant was relieved to know that DH was also RhNeg, consequently all our children are too.

Rhesus disease only happens when the mother has rhesus negative blood (RhD negative) and the baby in her womb has rhesus positive blood (RhD positive). The mother must have also been previously sensitised to RhD positive blood.

Sensitisation happens when a woman with RhD negative blood is exposed to RhD positive blood, usually during a previous pregnancy with an RhD positive baby. The woman’s body responds to the RhD positive blood by producing antibodies (infection-fighting molecules) that recognise the foreign blood cells and destroy them.

Interesting information. Is that what used to be called blue babies ? I remember my mother saying she couldn’t have any more children after me because she was RhNeg. She said it did not affect the first child but I don’t know if that is true.
I am O+ but my daughter is RhNeg and I remember her receiving an injection before her twins were born. They later said it was just precautionary as her husband was the same blood group and there wouldn’t be a problem.

I meant to add what a great man! Very many thanks to him.

R.I.P. My daughters are both A rhesus negative so had to have the anti D injection after their first pregnancies. My husband is also rhesus negative.

Yes, I read about this and was also so impressed.
My god-daughter had injections in her second pregnancy, due to Rhesus incompatibility.
It makes my blood donations seem pretty paltry by comparison!

RIP. Truly great person.
