Cuthbert, Dibble and Grub. Anyone remember these little firemen from Trumpton? For some reason I started thinking about them this morning and remember sitting to watch Trumpton, Camberwick Green and, I think the other one was Chigley, over the years with grandchildren. They were such lovely stories, personally think they were nicer than those they have these days.

I loved watching Trumpton and Chigley. I also enjoyed Tales of the Riverbank, The Wooden Tops, Andy Pandy and The Flowerpot Men. I can still sing the the songs and recite the fireman's names. I wasn't so impressed with the new digital versions of the children's programmes when my girls were small. How things change, not always for the better.

Noggin the Nog was devised by the lovely Oliver Postgate, who was also the source of the Clangers, my favourite.
My home town has a blue plaque outside his house, featuring the Clangers.

We didn’t have television when I was young. It was ‘Listen with Mother’ on the wireless.”Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin. “.
My son’ s favourite was always the Herbs, Parsley the lion especially.

I remember watching Tales of the Riverbank with my little sister. One day recently the tune popped into my head so I looked for it.
Here it is

My DD's favourite was Bagpus and DS loved Postman Pat.

"The Saga of Noggin the Nog".

I can still see it and I can still hear the voices.
Oliver Postern????

"This stuff gets in your head" as Derren Brown is wont to say.

Sarnia - it's from Chigley, happy memories!

Time flies by when I'm the driver of a train
And I ride on the footplate there and back again
Under bridges over bridges to our destination
Puffing through the countryside there's so much to be seen.
Passengers waving as we steam through a station.
Stoke up fireman for the signal is at green.

Time flies by when I'm the driver of a train
And I ride on the footplate there and back again
In the cutting, through the tunnel,
Rushing clanking on the track.
Wheezing pistons, smoking funnels,
Turning wheels go clickety clack.

Time flies by when I'm the driver of a train
And I ride on the footplate there and back again.

Or there's apparently another version:

Thank you so much for the words! I have been out and about this morning tidying up 3 family graves and snatches of this song have been coming back to me. Thanks for filling in the gaps.
An interesting alternative version. grin

Goodness Sarnia - well remembered! And your sailor memories are good - nostalgiacentral.com/television/tv-by-decade/tv-shows-1950s/prudence-kitten/

Now this is going back. Anyone else remember Prudence Kitten? We didn't have a TV at home but my grandparents did and I was enthralled with Prudence. I think she had an Uncle who was a sailor. Or am I muddling that up? I was around 5 at the time.
Lovely post awakening some happy memories.

Watch with Mother, I think, was in this order-

Monday - Picture Book
Tuesday - Andy Pandy
Wednesday - Bill & Ben
Thursday - Rag Tag & Bobtail
Friday - The Woodentops

I also loved Muffin the Mule and we then moved on to "Torchy, Torchy the battery boy" and Pinky & Perky.

Whack-o with Jimmy Edwards and not forgetting CRACKERJACK!!!

Grandmabatty Tue 11-Mar-25 12:35:12

"We love Muffin, Muffin the mule"
Topo Gigio
"This is a tale of Noggin the Nog"
OP you have awoken memories in me

Shinamae Tue 11-Mar-25 12:26:30

This is amazing because I remember loving Picture Book with Patricia Driscoll, I even remember her name and yet I can’t remember what happened the day before yesterday 😵‍💫😬

Calendargirl Tue 11-Mar-25 12:09:26

It would be Watch With Parent nowadays

No, the child will be watching it by themselves using their own mobile phone.

Very old brain mixing the programmes up but we loved them all and now no GC to watch with.
Although one GGC 14 months old and another due in August.

Greyduster Tue 11-Mar-25 11:46:54

I remembered from being a very small child, the music that opened Listen with Mother. The Berceuse from Faure’s Dolly Suite. Still a huge favourite. And Andy Pandy! Bagpuss was DD’s favourite. We introduced GS to Noggin the Nogg when he was small, but his favourites were always Postman Pat and Fireman Sam!

Shinamae Tue 11-Mar-25 11:41:13

The Wooden tops really used to freak me out as a child and I just watched them on YouTube and they still do 😜

Grannynannywanny Tue 11-Mar-25 11:39:17

Playschool was a firm favourite with my children in the 70’s. Floella Benjamin was a guest on Saturday Kitchen at the weekend.

The programme’s presenter Matt Tebbutt was star struck in her presence and looked emotional at times when he said how much it meant to him to have her on his programme.

She’s now 76 years old .

Grandmabatty Tue 11-Mar-25 11:32:42

Gingster 'and Emily loved Bagpuss .'
Button Moon and Postman Pat were my son's favourites while my daughter liked Rosie and Jim

Georgesgran Tue 11-Mar-25 11:25:31

Greenfinch Tue 11-Mar-25 11:23:46

Daddima my mother said I used to say.. No wait my brother's not ready!

I think that was 'Play School' Usedtobeblonde.

It was Play School. Watch with Mother opened with a white flower.
My mother always told me that I always answered, ‘Yes, I am’ when Listen with Mother asked ‘Are you sitting comfortably?’ before ‘ Then I’ll begin’!

It would be Watch with Parent nowadays.

Crossstitchfan Tue 11-Mar-25 10:45:47

My grandchildren adored Tobermory

Gingster Tue 11-Mar-25 10:40:32

Mr Ben was DS1’s favourite
Dd loved Bagpuss
DS2 love postman Pat.

Lovely gentle times
