Cuthbert, Dibble and Grub. Anyone remember these little firemen from Trumpton? For some reason I started thinking about them this morning and remember sitting to watch Trumpton, Camberwick Green and, I think the other one was Chigley, over the years with grandchildren. They were such lovely stories, personally think they were nicer than those they have these days.

I loved Trumpton and Camberwick Green. Windy Miller was another favourite character

ixion Tue 11-Mar-25 10:09:07

And Camberwick Green?

My DS used to watch in the hope that, one day, Windy Miller would misjudge his exit and the sails of his windmill would take his head off...

I now have the tune 'Time flies by when I'm the driver of a train' going around my head. I can't remember which of the 3 programmes it featured in. I hope someone will be able to tell me! Lovely little programmes. I wonder what today's tech savvy youngsters would make of them?

Usedtobeblonde Tue 11-Mar-25 10:14:13

So many happy hours watching these programmes.
My D is 60 this year and I can’t remember what I watched with her.
I remember the introduction to Watch with Mother when we had to guess which window shape we would be watching through that day.
Such very happy days I was , like most of my friends, a SAHM.
It won’t be the same for many children today.

Brings back happy memories of watching these programmes with grandchildren.

I think that was 'Play School' Usedtobeblonde.

Gingster Tue 11-Mar-25 10:40:32

Mr Ben was DS1’s favourite
Dd loved Bagpuss
DS2 love postman Pat.

Lovely gentle times

It was Play School. Watch with Mother opened with a white flower.
My mother always told me that I always answered, ‘Yes, I am’ when Listen with Mother asked ‘Are you sitting comfortably?’ before ‘ Then I’ll begin’!

It would be Watch with Parent nowadays.

Daddima my mother said I used to say.. No wait my brother's not ready!

Greenfinch Tue 11-Mar-25 11:23:46

I used to like Weed in Bill and Ben.

Georgesgran Tue 11-Mar-25 11:25:31

Bear in the Big Blue House anyone?

Grandmabatty Tue 11-Mar-25 11:32:42

Gingster 'and Emily loved Bagpuss .'
Button Moon and Postman Pat were my son's favourites while my daughter liked Rosie and Jim

Grannynannywanny Tue 11-Mar-25 11:39:17

Playschool was a firm favourite with my children in the 70’s. Floella Benjamin was a guest on Saturday Kitchen at the weekend.

The programme’s presenter Matt Tebbutt was star struck in her presence and looked emotional at times when he said how much it meant to him to have her on his programme.

She’s now 76 years old .

Shinamae Tue 11-Mar-25 11:41:13

The Wooden tops really used to freak me out as a child and I just watched them on YouTube and they still do 😜

Greyduster Tue 11-Mar-25 11:46:54

I remembered from being a very small child, the music that opened Listen with Mother. The Berceuse from Faure’s Dolly Suite. Still a huge favourite. And Andy Pandy! Bagpuss was DD’s favourite. We introduced GS to Noggin the Nogg when he was small, but his favourites were always Postman Pat and Fireman Sam!

Usedtobeblonde Tue 11-Mar-25 12:06:52

Very old brain mixing the programmes up but we loved them all and now no GC to watch with.
Although one GGC 14 months old and another due in August.

Calendargirl Tue 11-Mar-25 12:09:26

It would be Watch With Parent nowadays

No, the child will be watching it by themselves using their own mobile phone.

This is amazing because I remember loving Picture Book with Patricia Driscoll, I even remember her name and yet I can’t remember what happened the day before yesterday 😵‍💫😬

Grandmabatty Tue 11-Mar-25 12:35:12

"We love Muffin, Muffin the mule"
Topo Gigio
"This is a tale of Noggin the Nog"
OP you have awoken memories in me

ferry23 Tue 11-Mar-25 13:25:42

Watch with Mother, I think, was in this order-

Monday - Picture Book
Tuesday - Andy Pandy
Wednesday - Bill & Ben
Thursday - Rag Tag & Bobtail
Friday - The Woodentops

I also loved Muffin the Mule and we then moved on to "Torchy, Torchy the battery boy" and Pinky & Perky.

Whack-o with Jimmy Edwards and not forgetting CRACKERJACK!!!

Now this is going back. Anyone else remember Prudence Kitten? We didn't have a TV at home but my grandparents did and I was enthralled with Prudence. I think she had an Uncle who was a sailor. Or am I muddling that up? I was around 5 at the time.
Lovely post awakening some happy memories.

ferry23 Tue 11-Mar-25 13:46:16

Goodness Sarnia - well remembered! And your sailor memories are good - nostalgiacentral.com/television/tv-by-decade/tv-shows-1950s/prudence-kitten/

Sarnia - it's from Chigley, happy memories!

Time flies by when I'm the driver of a train
And I ride on the footplate there and back again
Under bridges over bridges to our destination
Puffing through the countryside there's so much to be seen.
Passengers waving as we steam through a station.
Stoke up fireman for the signal is at green.

Time flies by when I'm the driver of a train
And I ride on the footplate there and back again
In the cutting, through the tunnel,
Rushing clanking on the track.
Wheezing pistons, smoking funnels,
Turning wheels go clickety clack.

Time flies by when I'm the driver of a train
And I ride on the footplate there and back again.

Or there's apparently another version:
