Watching Gardeners World, what a load of complete rubbish!
What do others think please or am I just ratty?? 🄓

here in the UK they have become something of a sad fashion statement, particularly for those of a pretentious disposition

Oh No! I’ve got a faded black one. I had no idea I’ve been wearing a pretentious fashion statement around Aldi. šŸ˜‚

Monty Don reminds me of my mums old window cleaner. It is that blue jacket thingy he often wears.
I haven’t really enjoyed it much since Alan Titchmarsh left.
Not as practical and too aspirational.

Also in his first foray at presenting Gardeners World, Monty said something to the effect of ā€œpeople who rent there homes are unlikely look after their gardensā€ which got a lot of peoples backs up.
Did used to love it when Ground Force was shown just before it back in the dayšŸ™‚

Oh Granmarderby10, That blue jacket that Monty has been sporting a lot of lately is in fact very on trend now!
It's called a French chore coat People in France pop them over their good clothes whilst doing their chores or pottering.
It's a bit like a poncy apron!
Chore coats are also popular in China but here in the UK they have become something of a sad fashion statement, particularly for those of a pretentious disposition. šŸ¤”

Mary Berry is quite 'posh' but not a member of the aristocracy.

I do remember that when she was in hospital with polio as a young girl her father walked her pony in to visit her when the patients were allowed outdoors.

Calendargirl Fri 21-Mar-25 08:35:54

Listening to Mary Berry chatting to an old friend on a cookery/documentary show a while ago, Mary said, (in horror), ā€œOh goodness, I sound like the Queen!ā€ when they were watching a very old show of hers.

And she did! Mary still comes across as a bit ā€˜posh’, but back then, she sounded unbelievably, well, stuck up, to be honest.

She has definitely changed her presenting voice and style over the years.

It always makes me smile when I hear the voices on old TV documentaries. At least we hear accents that are reflective of our different regions these days but there's still so much snobbery.

Allira Thu 20-Mar-25 22:32:43

Well said, Ziplok, Casdon, Churchview and some other posters.

🤐 Oh Allira, ignore me, my mouth runs away with joy of typing!
Good advice, I will try, Ilovedogs

Ziplok Thu 20-Mar-25 22:25:33

Oh dear, I’m not sure what Monty Don, Frances Tophill, Adam Frost, Rachel de Thame, Carol Kline or Alan Titchmarsh has done to some of you when I read the comments made about them that some of you have posted.

They seem quite personable individuals to me (though I’ve never met any of them, of course, so can only judge them by what I’ve seen of them on the tv). They certainly don’t strike me as the unpleasant individuals some of you seem to think they are.

Their accents and background are what they are - all part of the rich tapestry of life here in the UK, and they shouldn’t be judged negatively for them, which I sense some of you are doing, sadly.

If I don’t enjoy watching something, I don’t. To continue to watch it and then moan seems rather daft.

Churchview Thu 20-Mar-25 20:47:32

I'm beginning to think that *Ilovedogs22" was unsuccessful in her application to be a presenter on Gardeners World.

Casdon Thu 20-Mar-25 20:31:56

What do you mean Ilovedogs22? Most women use their married name, so why is it exceptional in any way for Rachel to do so? You seem determined to make cutting remarks about virtually all the gardening presenters, I don’t know why.

Ilovedogs22 Thu 20-Mar-25 20:25:21

Defo Carol Klein, not Rachel ---whose name is not originally so posh?

SparklyGrandma Thu 20-Mar-25 19:51:06

I’d rather have Carol Klein or Rachel de Thane as a replacement, if Monty is to leave GW.

Better to be a lover than a hater Ilovedogs22. Much easier on the blood pressure.

Oh Churchview, a bit of fire in the belly never hurt anyone!
Also, I'm not a hater, I just can't understand why some TV personalities rise to the top, for no obvious, conceivable reason.
Such as the truly dreadful Mr Titchmarch.šŸ¤”

Ilovedogs22 Thu 20-Mar-25 17:35:38

Yes Esmay, Gardener's World has sort of morphed through various incarnations with various presenters & topics of relevance over the years. Some good old standard pracical stuff & a smattering of inspirational magic.
However, of late there has been far too much really poncy & pretentious stuff featured!
Huge massive country piles & organic dells and grottoes & the like! In addition there has been lots of re-hashed ideas, which we all probably know anyway.
Gardeners World started to go downhill maybe 2-3 years ago & I no longer look forward to it each week, as I used to.
Ohh don't get me going on some of the presenters. Get rid of Francis and give Toby Buckland more airtime.šŸ¤”

I was enjoying watching Gardener's World yesterday until a viewer's garden was featured .
I switched over .
I want to see professional techniques not amateur gardens .
It has become formulaic .

"Gosh so many of you worshiping at the alter of old Titchmarsh "

Never been accused of that before, Ilovedogs22 tbh I can take him or leave him and as I said up thread I don't even watch GW! Now I am rather fond of Stanley Tucci and Italian food! I watched all his travels round Italy.

Ilovedogs22 Thu 20-Mar-25 14:14:27

"(unlike snivelling, horribly nasal, common Titchmarsh!"
Wow, so you don't like him then, "Ilovedogs22". Nothing to do with his knowledge of gardening but all to do with his accent and social class. "Snivelling"! How on earth does someone "snivel" on a gardening programme?

Mr Titchmarsh does snivel foxie48,
He's very nasal & whiny when he speaks. Gosh so many of you worshiping at the alter of old Titchmarsh
Unbelievable!😳

merlotgran Thu 20-Mar-25 14:05:15

Definition of ā€˜jumped up:

Somebody who considers themselves to be more important than they really are, or who has suddenly and undeservedly risen in status

I can understand the first bit might apply to AT but he has worked hard for many years, since his days at Pebble Mill, to become a successful presenter. If the powers that be didn’t like his style he wouldn’t be where he is now.

common - sounded like a blast from the past!

Hyacinth Bucket made me say the C word!
How very remiss of me but I still think Titchmarsh is a jumped-up little twit! šŸ¤”

Churchview Thu 20-Mar-25 13:35:57

"are we not allowed to speak freely? To express likes and dislikes equally?"

Yes of course. We are allowed to ask questions and express agreement or disagreement in return.

Ooh er, common! How dreadful.

I think writing posts like that about people who have never done you any harm is somewhat creepy.

Yet, are we not allowed to speak freely? To express likes and dislikes equally?
I'm sure that worse things have been said on GN, far worst than .... ......common or God forbid creepy. šŸ¤”

Alan's been friends with the King for decades. That makes him posh in my book.

Yes, he had been dining with the King the night before the late Queen died.

Something to tell your GC, I suppose.

ā€œWell, The King and I were eating profiteroles…..ā€
