Plans to make contact less payments with no maximum limit on what you purchase, not a good move me thinks.

Some bank apps allow you to look up the card pin. The nice lady in my bank showed me how to do this. Unfortunately I can’t remember the sequence of steps to retrieve the pin!

I have recently been out to lunch on 2 occasions with the same small group of friends.
One is getting very forgetful and in fact lets her son do most things for her, certainly where finances are concerned.
When the time came for us to pay, her card would not “tap” and she should have inserted it and used her PIN. Unfortunately she had no idea of the number as her son gets cash out of the ATM when she needs it .She didn’t have enough cash on her so one of us paid. The son transferred the money a day or so later when he learned of this but did not take the hint of either telling his mum her PIN or perhaps providing a way of remembering it, because the following week the same thing happened again. I felt very sorry for her .
Many places no longer take cash and it seems to be a case of “use it or lose (forget) it” with one’s PIN.

Don’t stop using cash. Computers go down.

Cash or card when the bar code scanner stops you can’t use cash either, when the cash machine stops you can’t get cash.

There have been a couple of times in the last two years when I was only able to complete my purchase because I had cash on me - once in Aldi and once in The Works - because they were having Internet problems.

I have no idea whether their bar code scanners were working, or not, but I was able to pay cash, and if I hadn't had any on me, I would have had to leave empty-handed like all the non-cash-carrying customers were having to do.

I much prefer a limit. I lost my phone but luckily my bank cards were not inside the phone wallet.

I am frequently asked to enter my
pin so know it well.

I volunteer on the till of a community shop.
Occasionally people can't pay on their phones, and don't carry cash. Sometimes the till fails but we are happy to take either cards or cash.

Ofcourse we get charged for the cards and the fees which run to thousands annually, doesn't go into the local economy, unlike cash.

I do wish we could reply on this forum or at least have like!

Nearly everyone here in NZ has stopped using cash. We don’t even live in the same area as our bank -it’s several hundred miles away and we haven’t had any issues. We keep some cash in case of problems that affect the money machines. (Such as earthquakes!😳)

I shall be making my limit smaller than they put it at, in case of cards lost or stolen. I want to be able to use my money as I choose and not be told I can only use a card by shops or cafes etc. You could have thousands in the bank and the latest posh phone, but if you are up in the Dales the reception is nil in some places and you need cash there.

Also I support our local markets and use cash there. If you use a card they have to pay for it and so eventually the prices will go up, or the markets will disappear and then you will be at the mercy of the supermarkets. I want choice, and intend to spend my money in the way I choose, and it is coin of the realm so do not see why they refuse it. Of course, shops may choose to only take cards and I may choose not to use those shops!! I am usually quite an organised person, and when I visit garden shows etc etc, get smiled upon by grateful stall holders as I give them the correct money. There have also been a couple of occasions lately when there was a problem with card machines in the supermarket and so of course I had no problem paying for my goods and off. If you are a reasonably intelligent person it should be your choice how and in which way you spend your money. The idea that cards would be quicker is proved to be quite wrong as people messing about at check outs show!!

For those who use Stocard - it has recently been taken over by Klarna. I had to download the Klarna app and the cards all transferred over. However, so far as I can see, you can only use Klarna for storecards (I used Stocard for all sorts including library cards, bank cards, National Trust etc.) When I tried to add a new one it looks as if you can only choose from the storecards that have been set up (unless I'm missing something....)

We do card only at our small sports club bar primarily because all the banks have closed in our town so taking cash out and paying it in is not easy plus we don’t want to trudge around carrying cash from a security angle. We do keep a small float in case the till goes down or somebody doesn’t own a card.

Moth62 Sat 22-Mar-25 17:18:47

When I was in a large city recently, I was as amazed at the number of establishments that said they were Card Only. I always have cash as well as a card.

25Avalon Sat 22-Mar-25 12:46:31

Contactless payments can only be made a number of times before your card will not be accepted and you have to chip and pin before you can use the card contactlessly again. This is not a faulty card reader as some think but protection from your bank so if you lose your card or it is stolen it can only be used a number of times.

ATM the limit for each transaction is £100 which I would have thought is a reasonable amount but I would not like to see it exceeded. The problem I have is remembering my PIN number as it gets asked for infrequently. Then I feel like people will think I’m a criminal.

nanna8 Sat 22-Mar-25 01:49:12

We deliberately set a low limit on credit cards in case they get lost or stolen. Madness not to really these days.

Stocard is available here in the UK too. I put all my loyalty cards into it as well as my driving licence, gym membership card, library card etc.

Some shop chains took a little while to catch on and their loyalty cards wouldn't work through a third party app initially, but I think they have all caught up now.

Besides there is no way I could carry every loyalty card I have in my purse, there are just too many!

Of course Apple wallet can do the same but I prefer to reserve that for tickets and my bank cards.

SuperTinny Sat 22-Mar-25 00:15:47

I've been completely wedded to Apple Pay (no limit on spending, but its not a credit card, just using your debit card via a third party) since I started using it during Covid.

The upside is I no longer forget to take my phone out and about with me, the downside ..... ? I sometimes forget to take my purse with me and the world hasn't caught up yet!

Huia Fri 21-Mar-25 19:35:59

We have this in NZ and I have concluded it is better to keep cards on my phone and keep actual cards at home. It’s harder to get into a phone’s security system even if you lose your phone. I use my phone for all my cards in an app called Stocard. (Of course the UK apps will be different.) and can use them from there. .

Greciangirl Fri 21-Mar-25 18:56:52

I don’t trust Apple Pay.
Much prefer to tap and pay or enter PIN number.

orly Fri 21-Mar-25 15:59:53

We just traded in for a new car and had to put £7,900 on our debit card for the difference. We were not inconvenienced at all by having to input a PIN - in fact I would vote to keep the contactless limit at £100. Card theft is going to be even more attractive now and with the increased threat of violence too.

4allweknow Fri 21-Mar-25 14:33:44

If you use a banking App you can already spend over £100 at a time.

jocork Fri 21-Mar-25 14:23:17

The limit is perfectly big enough for me as I live alone and do lots of small shops, but a big family shop may exceed the limit for many. I struggle to remember my pins since using contactless all the time and have been caught out when the card needs to be inserted occasionally. I need to change all my pins to the same one so I can remember it.

Susieq62 Fri 21-Mar-25 14:18:52

Easy to set a limit on all of your cards so you are in control again
