Plans to make contact less payments with no maximum limit on what you purchase, not a good move me thinks.

Jaxjacky Thu 20-Mar-25 16:32:18

The Financial Conuct Authority are investigating multiple options, nothing is a given yet.

If you lose your credit cards and report the loss straight away your bank won’t charge you for fraudulent transactions.

LOUISA1523 Thu 20-Mar-25 18:01:37

I froze my card immediately I lost it last year ....its an easy option with online banking ....obviously you need to know you have lost it

Mollygo Thu 20-Mar-25 18:08:53

I prefer to have a limit to what can be spent.

J52 Thu 20-Mar-25 18:54:08

We’ve always found that our bank, one of the usual ones, is always pretty hot on unusual activity.
DH bought something on line, from Amazon and the seller took the money 3 times. DH was unaware, but the bank stopped the payment, contacted DH and blocked any money ever going to that person.

I pay on my phone

NotAGran55 Thu 20-Mar-25 21:09:00

Much safer to use Apple Pay with face identification than a card.

I'm in favour of keeping the current limit. If card is lost or stolen it's good to think there's a limit on what could be taken.

Greennana Fri 21-Mar-25 13:58:30

I've lowered my contactless limit on my banking app. Then I forget my pin when I'm spending more than my limit 🤣

Earthmother9 Fri 21-Mar-25 14:02:22

Use cash.........problem solved.

123gran Fri 21-Mar-25 14:04:08

Ooh, I know that could be done Greennana. Thanks.

I rarely carry cash but it really is not a tragedy if you need to insert card etc. That said I do think maybe it should increase to a sensiblr amount for 2025 considering the cost of living now. But, no limits ? No way.

Homestead62 Fri 21-Mar-25 14:14:14

It should be up to us to set our own limits. Everybody has different incomes.

Susieq62 Fri 21-Mar-25 14:18:52

Easy to set a limit on all of your cards so you are in control again

jocork Fri 21-Mar-25 14:23:17

The limit is perfectly big enough for me as I live alone and do lots of small shops, but a big family shop may exceed the limit for many. I struggle to remember my pins since using contactless all the time and have been caught out when the card needs to be inserted occasionally. I need to change all my pins to the same one so I can remember it.

4allweknow Fri 21-Mar-25 14:33:44

If you use a banking App you can already spend over £100 at a time.

orly Fri 21-Mar-25 15:59:53

We just traded in for a new car and had to put £7,900 on our debit card for the difference. We were not inconvenienced at all by having to input a PIN - in fact I would vote to keep the contactless limit at £100. Card theft is going to be even more attractive now and with the increased threat of violence too.

Greciangirl Fri 21-Mar-25 18:56:52

I don’t trust Apple Pay.
Much prefer to tap and pay or enter PIN number.

Huia Fri 21-Mar-25 19:35:59

We have this in NZ and I have concluded it is better to keep cards on my phone and keep actual cards at home. It’s harder to get into a phone’s security system even if you lose your phone. I use my phone for all my cards in an app called Stocard. (Of course the UK apps will be different.) and can use them from there. .

SuperTinny Sat 22-Mar-25 00:15:47

I've been completely wedded to Apple Pay (no limit on spending, but its not a credit card, just using your debit card via a third party) since I started using it during Covid.

The upside is I no longer forget to take my phone out and about with me, the downside ..... ? I sometimes forget to take my purse with me and the world hasn't caught up yet!

SuperTinny Sat 22-Mar-25 00:22:26

Huia

Stocard is available here in the UK too. I put all my loyalty cards into it as well as my driving licence, gym membership card, library card etc.

Some shop chains took a little while to catch on and their loyalty cards wouldn't work through a third party app initially, but I think they have all caught up now.

Besides there is no way I could carry every loyalty card I have in my purse, there are just too many!

Of course Apple wallet can do the same but I prefer to reserve that for tickets and my bank cards.

Don’t stop using cash. Computers go down.

nanna8 Sat 22-Mar-25 01:49:12

We deliberately set a low limit on credit cards in case they get lost or stolen. Madness not to really these days.

25Avalon Sat 22-Mar-25 12:46:31

Contactless payments can only be made a number of times before your card will not be accepted and you have to chip and pin before you can use the card contactlessly again. This is not a faulty card reader as some think but protection from your bank so if you lose your card or it is stolen it can only be used a number of times.

ATM the limit for each transaction is £100 which I would have thought is a reasonable amount but I would not like to see it exceeded. The problem I have is remembering my PIN number as it gets asked for infrequently. Then I feel like people will think I’m a criminal.
