‘The headteacher of Norwood Primary School has written to parents to confirm that Easter is being marked at the school, following days of controversy and national media attention over the decision not to hold a ‘traditional’ Easter bonnet parade or attend a church service this year.
In a new letter to families, Miss Mander said children would continue learning about Easter and taking part in seasonal activities across the term.
“To be clear, we are marking Easter in school,” she wrote. “Children continue to learn about and celebrate Easter both educationally in our R.E. lessons and in our assemblies across the whole half term. Children will also continue to take part in much-enjoyed Easter craft activities as we approach the end of the term.”
She thanked parents who had sent messages of support and said these reflected the school’s strong community spirit.
The head also acknowledged concerns about planned protest activity and confirmed that the school is working with the police to monitor the situation. A Christian activist group, which has accused the school of attacking Christianity, has threatened “direct action” in response to the decision to drop the Easter bonnet parade and church visit this year.’
