A few times lately I have heard people say 'oh they shop in Sainsbury's' used in a dismissive way as though the person has more money than sense.
Is that how other grans see it?

I don't think anyone I know well would sneer at another person's choice of supermarket. It's either snobbery or inverted snobbery - their money, their choice.
To be honest I’ve usually heard that phrase attributed to Waitrose.
No. I use Sainsbury's (for deliveries) and don't have more money than sense - IMO anyway
. Others may take a different view of how much sense I display.
I use to use Tesco as they were the first to offer delivery in my area about 25 years ago. I changed to Sainsbury's as there is no Tesco near where we shop when we visit our lodge, and I was running 2 points cards, so I decided to amalgamate and switch to Sainsbury's for both. I didn't notice a difference in price or quality - they are much of a muchness.
If I run out of supplies, my husband tops up from Morrisons as that is the local supermarket. Again, pricewise it is similar, but they don't have the range of either Sainsbury's or Tesco. If I am in the town centre I use M&S, which has a better choice of ready to cook things, but is a small branch so I wouldn't do a week's shop there.
I don't see Sainsbury's as a fancy store - just a standard supermarket.
Oh, and of all of the available options I prefer Lidl for bakery products and fresh fruit.
Never heard that said about Sainsbury’s , thought it was the same as Tesco etc . Waitrose is the only one I’ve heard it said about.
I can’t say I’ve heard that - I like Sainsburys better than the other major supermarkets, as it’s very good for gluten free. I think a lot more people shop in Lidl and Aldi now though, so I suppose it is more expensive than they are, maybe that’s what was meant?
I have used Sainsbury’s for more years than I care to remember.
My H and I went every Friday morning for a big shop and then I would nip in mid week for top ups.
Since he became ill and then housebound I have had deliveries weekly and still do after he died.
I seldom have any issues, decent quality ,fair prices and have never once been let down with delivery.
I am happy and won’t change.
I used to always shop at Sainsbury's as it was the nearest big supermarket (only 17 miles away) but others have opened since then which are nearer.
It's just middle-of-the-road supermarket!

"Overheard in Waitrose" has its own Facebook page 😂
According to Which, based on a basket of 100 goods surveyed in February 2025, Sainsbury's (with Nectar) cost £213.46 and Aldi £182.64. Waitrose was £245.79.

There's an Ocado advert on tv currently which discusses supermarket snobbery.
I don't think Sainsburys is posh. I'd say average.
I use Sainsburys as my store of choice. I find the quality good, and the store is huge. They have a restaurant with concessions, a large clothing department, a homeware section and like many stores now a Argos in it.
People talk rubbish sometimes about people's personal preferences. I have been told I must have plenty of money as I also do a very small shop in Waitrose, there are a couple of things I like.
I am doomed
I shop between Aldi, M & S, Sainsbury’s in store and Waitrose for delivery!
Me too - I shop in Asda (leaves head on block)
My main shop is from Ocado and my top up from Sainsbury’s or M&S. The fashion seems to be that Lidl or Aldi are the places to go but I find the former offers more choice which are cheaper but lack the quality.
I suspect that most people shop where is convenient. Parking, proximity etc matter more than loyalty to a store. Yes, there are some price differentials, but nowhere near as much as the stores would like us to believe. Sainsbury's price matches with Aldi and Asda anyway, so it's not a consideration.
There is an advert where someone infers that Sainsbury’s is unaffordable, but shows that is wrong. I don’t watch ads so I’m not quite sure how it goes.
I shop wherever is convenient. When Aldi opened near me, I started to shop there. When DH was alive we had deliveries, either Morrisons or Sainsbury’s. There is only a small Sainsbury’s near me with not much choice. The nearby Co-op is better. My nearest big supermarket is Morrisons but I rarely go there. I’ve got used to Aldi and get overwhelmed by so much choice in bigger shops.
Waitrose is my nearest and I do shop there but I am price conscience and it is usually for a treat I fancy. I do online shopping at Morrisons. I used to use Sainsbirys until the driver had a supposed nervous breakdown in the street and I was left with half of my delivery. That put me off.

Tesco, Waitrose, M&S, Lidl and farm shop 😁
We used to get funny comments about Aldi but it is now the most popular supermarket where we live so everyone loves it now. My mum always shopped at Waitrose because it wasn’t as crowded as Sainsbury’s back in the day. She struggled with walking and balance.
I have always considered Sainsbury's to be middle of the road where supermarkets are concerned.
At the top end there is M&S and Waitrose and at the lower end you have Lidl, Aldi and Asda. The other supermarkets such as Sainsbury's and Morrisons are in-between.
Allira we have a very good local farm shop which I use for nearly all my fruit and veg, along with pork and beef.
It also has a very nice cafe, using its own produce.
I have shopped at Sainsbury's since 1981 when we got married . Had Sainsbury's delivery when my husband became terminal in 2003. Still have Sainsbury's delivery every 6-7weeks but do a top up stop either at my local Sainsbury's or Aldi as they are both close to where I live . Never lived where there was a large Tesco or Asda and I don't drive.
Where I used to live I did my top up shop at Waitrose as it was the closest supermarket to where I used to live .
You can get your bargains at all supermarkets I just shop where it's convenient for me. But I do like Sainsbury's own brands over other supermarket's but saying that there are are few things at Aldi I like as well.
I think it's a case of shopping where its convenient for you .
I’ve only heard that related to Waitrose. I do like Sainsburys but spend far too much in there. In the early days of Aldi lots of people were very sniffy about it, including my nephew’s wife who said she wouldn’t be seen dead in there. I now run into her there regularly😂. DD shops at Sainsburys but is not averse to popping across to Aldi “for a few bits” now and then. I wish we had a Lidl nearer to us - I really like Lidl.
