The Lady magazine has apparently ‘gone into liquidation’ despite there being an April issue apparently.

I remember going into the dark gloomy office to buy a copy think it was Monday? before Tuesday when it was on the stands and shops, to get ahead, when I was job hunting.
Then Ms Johnson took over.

I recall, albeit many years ago, pages and pages of jobs, holiday cottages, London flats to share, another time wasn’t it, life was simpler. Now this news has made me remember so much.

Does anyone else have a The Lady story to tell?

Yes! My friend and I got our au pair jobs in Italy through The Lady. This was decades ago and the only way of getting such jobs. Believe it or not it was considered very brave- if not a bit crazy to do such a thing in "those days". It was a huge adventure for us before university. Today I speak Italian and have never forgotten that first of many adventures abroad. The Lady was a means to an end; I rarely bought it just to read. I always felt nostalgic to see it though.

I thought it had gone long since. Not seen it for years. Many magazines are finding it hard to carry on, but if you do not advertise your existence, then only themselves to blame

I've got 11 old copies of The Lady, dating mainly from the 50s, but a couple in the early 60s. Lovely to read - such nostalgia, although I never took the magazine when I was young. I was about to tie them up to give them to a charity shop, but if anyone on Gransnet would like them, send me a private message with an address I can send them to. If you want to repay postage, just donate it to your favourite charity. Here's a photo - hope it transfers. First

Oh dear, My post just says 'Image coming soon'. Let's hope it does, you you can see all 11 copies of The Lady. The last sentence was meant to say 'First time I have posted a photo on here'. Which doesn't seem to have worked!

Many years ago I worked at WHSmith and we had a number of ladies who ordered this weekly. It always fascinated me just a little bit. I also remember Lady Grantham advertising in The Lady for a new ladies maid! When my daughter was re-watching Downton Abbey recently (in preparation for the third film), I did find myself wondering if The Lady was still even going. It very much does feel like it belonged to a very different time.

I recommended the magazine to a friend of mine who was looking for a job. She landed a job as house mother in a posh naval school for boys in Oxfordshire. It worked out for her as she ended up meeting her future husband down there!

I’m sure it’s still online. I get an email from The Lady monthly advertising hired help etc.

I wrote some short stories for The Lady, many years ago. Out of all the women's magazines, I think that it was my favourite because they gave you space and didn't expect stories always to be short and snappy.

I think Boris Johnson's sister got rid of the stories, but I had ditched the women's mags market by then.

I've heard from a member who would like the early copies of The Lady I offered for free, so they're no longer available.

Yes many years ago aged 18 I was desperate to leave home, abusive stepmother and bought the Lady to look for an au pair job. On the back page an advertisement saying do like children if so why don’t you train to be a children’s nurse. I applied, accepted and started training 1 month later! Thank you Lady one of the best decisions I ever made!

I got a job from The Lady, when I was about 16, as an Assistant at a non-residential Inn at Friday Street, near Abinger Hammer, Dorking Way. Made friends with a girl who lived near Mumbles Beach, Swansea, and we were friends for years!
