Totally agree Calendargirl . I too hope that Diana would have found happiness. We all deserve that. Sadly too, had she not died, we might well not have been where we are with Prince Harry and this particular tragedy avoided. We'll never know that of course, but it does almost seem that one tragedy led to the other.

I didn't say people who had busy parents were unloved. I do think Charles had a harsh upbringing which resulted in a rather damaged human being.

Following on from Jaberwok’s post, we shall never know, of course, but if Diana hadn’t been killed in that dreadful accident all those years ago, I like to think she would now be either happily remarried or in a lasting relationship, still attending certain Royal events as mother and grandmother of future kings, and she, Charles and Camilla able to maintain an amicable, civilised relationship.

And being there for both her sons and their families.

Well as far as I'm concerned, it was all a long time ago now and yes there were many mistakes on both sides concerning that marriage from different people who should perhaps have known better, but who are now dead. It was a tragedy for both Diana and Charles, making both of them extremely unhappy which was very sad. You cannot alter the faults of the past, but you can hope for a brighter, happier future. Charles and Camilla adore each other, which is wonderful to see. I don't think the good Lord or anyone else could begrudge them that.

Actually, it's rather upsetting to think that people believe because a parent is extremely busy with their job and have to travel overseas for months at a time, that the children aren't loved.

That would mean that servicemen and women, parted from their families, don't love them which is just plain wrong.

That would include me then, as my father was away at sea for long periods of time and my mother’s job included shifts, so we were cared for by our grandparents.
I never felt unloved, but maybe some people thought I was. That’s upsetting. 😥😥

Mollygo it’s what happened in families, today we have childcare because mothers are working. It was the norm for me, I lived in a South Wales mining village, aged 11 my parents moved to Mid Wales, I was so distressed and angry, why didn’t they leave me with my our extended family not make me move to that awful strange place.

Charles spent much time with his grandmother because his mother was Queen, he has spoken of his love for her, all children in their circle went to boarding school, Charles and his brothers attended the same school, which was at that time
boys only, Anne went to a girls boarding school, her two children went to the same school as Charles and his brothers

I don't believe Charles was unloved but certainly had a different upbringing from most because of 'the system'. His father was probably very strict and no-nonsense too.

Agree Pantglas her sister Sarah had dated Charles, the Queen was godmother to her brother, her grandmother was lady in waiting and close friend of the Queen Mother, she handled the press so well walking too her car, her brother in law worked for the Queen and he was first cousin to Sarah Ferguson father

I disagree that Diana was a naive teenager - no girl with two older sisters is that foolish and whilst she may not have been academic she was a smarter cookie than many gave her credit for!

I suspect Charles was her chance to shine as the third daughter of an earl and was prepared to overlook his infidelity while it suited her. When it didn't, she soon found a way to let us all know...

Charles was the heir MOnica, which is why ‘they’ were keen for him to marry and have children.

If he had remained childless, it wouldn’t have been the same, Andrew would have succeeded on C’s death, (Aagh) and then it would have been his offspring, I assume.

That was one of the reasons the earlier Prince of Wales, David, later Edward V111 caused concern, still a bachelor in his 40’s.

Princess Diana was 18/19 when she was wooed by Prince Charles, just the at the when one has pashes on sophisticated older men and of course the idea of being Princess of Wales must have been attractive because he was the Prince of Wales. Cinderella marrying her handsome Prince, but for most of us, thankfully, it is love unrequited and we grow up. She was a not very clever rather naive girl from a troubled back ground.

I think this talk about Prince Charles being pressured into marriage to have an heir ridiulous. He has 2 brothers, and a sister who already had children, there was no dynastic pressure and a man of his age should be quite capable of standing up to the pressures of being pushed into something he did not want to do. Especially when he had a favourite mistress with an accomodating husband.

My brother married several times before he met his wife - he's finally happily married. Amongst ourselves, my husband and I have commented, favourably, to his 3 years of happiness.

1973 having coffee with a friend discussing the church fete, she had recently been to a wedding of her cousin Camilla. Showed me some photographs, I had no idea who Camilla was , in the course of conversation the cousin spoke of her hoping they would be happy and he had calmed over his very flirtatious happenings . She did say her cousin was so in love with him.

I'm probably on the wrong thread with that, Mollygo but I'm sure you know who I meant, because I think that neither King Charles nor Camilla would have chosen to live in the glare of publicity, nor did HM Queen Elizabeth. It was thrust upon them or came with the love of the man and marriage in Camilla's case.

I’m fascinated by the differing views of Charles first and second marriages as I didn’t believe in the fairytale version of the first nor the Kismet label of this one!

Diana knew she wasn’t the midnight mystery blonde on the train during their courtship and yet she married him! Who does that?

I reckon it was a transactional marriage by them both (as many are in so many circles). He needed an heir and spare and she actually divulged to Penny Mountbatten that she wished to become Princess of Wales - who thought it strange that she’d used those words rather than Charles’ bride.

Regardless, neither behaved well and went on to happier relationships albeit shortlived in Diana’s case.
