Watching this program and hadn’t heard of this expression before..trading standards person stated that if you’ve ever been added to a mailing list eg a gardening / motor/ wine magazine and they all seem to have ‘sister’ websites, you could unknowingly be on a suckers list …OMG horrible name…but this is what the trading standards call them

So it’s a warning to all of us and especially the vulnerable and elderly especially- one lady who handles her elderly father’s finances was asking him what certain monthly payments were that were being made and he had no idea but further investigation revealed he had ordered an item/service and as he hadn’t ticked a box, further payments were being taken as his data had been sold onto other websites…
I’ve often been targeted for a special one off reward and have been tempted but now after hearing/seeing this fraud am not going to…anyone else feel they’ve been put on such a list?

People who enter the TV competitions, for instance, Word Search, are also put on the 'suckers' list.

I’m always very careful what I order and from whom, I also check my bank accounts, including direct debits online at least weekly.
But I understand how it can easily be done.

Yes, DH entered one of those competitions Aldom and then came the phone call telling him he was a lucky winner, only one of three in the country.
Scam.

Now heard QR Codes are not always genuine.. how are WE to know if they’re authentic or not…I recently had to re-pair my ITVx access using a QR code to use on 2 tvs in house - both of which already had ITVx ….this was a random request on Tv screen - had to text DD as becoming a bit it paranoid when asked to do something… she just said - yes she gets Netflix asking her for the account details from time to time…

But it doesn’t bother me her ..Only anxious Annie here🤔

We all need to be on our guard these days, don’t we as it seems the scammers are always one step ahead of us.

Most of us I expect are aware of the well publicised common scams such as being urged to move our money to a safe account, and the request to assist in trapping a suspected inside job at the bank, amongst others but new ones are popping up all the time.

That’s why I have a lot of respect for folk who have been scammed yet are willing to come on sites like this and tell their tale as a warning to others.

Word search …😕..

Word Search, comes on during the programme break, afternoon TV.
You have to find a flower and maybe a town. Always very obvious. There's a small fee to enter. That way they get your bank details. Pass you on to people who are out to scam you. Be aware, be careful.

They phone, tell you you're a lucky winner, say oh no, they don't need your bank details 😁 then try to sell you a monthly competition scam.

I wish people would realise that you don’t have to give your phone number to any sites
The only people who have my number are O2 obviously 😉 my bank and my Dr.
When the sites asks for a telephone number just put your code and any made up number.
And please, please, dont leave your card on any site

I paid for something on a genealogy site, not a subscription but a one-off purchase and had extreme difficulty in getting my card details removed.

It was FindmyPast if anyone uses that site.

I’m convinced that a neighbour’s who was scammed out of a huge amount of money, was on a suckers’ list because of her addiction to Wordsearch ‘competitions’. I read about suckers’ lists when researching scams on the vulnerable at the time.
She was just very naive and trusting, so when someone phoned and said she worked for NayWest, and neighbour had won £1m in a lottery she hadn’t even entered…..

NatWest!

The QR codes to be very wary of are those in public spaces. There have been cases of fraudsters covering a genuine one with their own scam one. I'd not use them, I'll always just type in the website address myself. They may be quick easy shortcuts in some circumstances, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

It really irritates me if a phone number is demanded when I’m just buying something online. I just enter a fake one now.

The one time the company should have phoned me - I’d given my number - was when I’d ordered something for next day delivery. I waited in all day - it didn’t arrive.
When I phoned to ask why, ‘It was unexpectedly out of stock.’
So why the hell didn’t you ring me?
I wrote a very 🤬letter of complaint, and did get a hefty gift voucher for my pains.

I am sick to death of all these cheating pigs. They seem to be increasing across the world. No punishments, no sanctions, the pigs get off Scot free. No, on second thoughts, that is an insult to pigs which are fine animals.

Good advice. Provided the number you put starts with 0 and has 11 digits, it will probably be accepted without question. For example 09876543210

On the bright side I heard recently that scammers regulary clear numbers where they never get any reply or are always seen off.

I think we have been cleared off a lot of lists because we always put the phone down, so we now get very few scammer phone calls,
