Oil-seed rape

Cough, cough. Splutter, splutter, sneeeeze!
Is it just me or has anyone else noticed how early the oil-seed rape has flowered this year? In the past seven days, vast tracts of Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire are suddenly covered in swathes of the yellow menace. Pass the tissues, somebody, please. 🤧

There’s so much of it, too.

Sorry you have an allergy but don’t think it’s out early this year. I am South east and it’s always in full bloom here in April. ?
I rather like to see the bright yellow fields, but am luckily not allergic.
You have my sympathy.

It’s not early here - just bits of yellow, but not in full bloom. I don’t have hay fever, so to me, it smells heavenly - just like honey. I’ve ditched olive oil for rapeseed oil too.

Being in the countryside here, the fields are full of it.
Worse luck.
I've been allergic for the last 30 years.
Before the rapeseed the fields used to have blue stuff in them but I don't know what that was. Corn and wheat.
The weather man on Anglian news said that it's a bad year for pollen. The bees will be happy though.smile
Antihistamine and nasal spray help.

Love to see it, though it smells like wet knickers

I use largely rapeseed now, but only U.K. grown, cold pressed, in glass.

I think the blue stuff was flax, Sharon . I remember seeing beautiful fields of it in north Essex and Cambridgeshire 20 to 30 years ago. Now, I wonder where the weavers of linen get it from. 🤷

It's quite beautiful, but I prefer olive oil.

The blue flowers are linseed which is the same crop as flax but shorter stemmed, grown in the UK for Linseed oil

Sorry about the allergies, I have different ones, but I do think the yellow and blue are lovely!

I noticed a granny’s bonnet nearly in flower, seems amazingly early.

Hay fever sufferers are having a terrible time this year.

British produced rapeseed oil is lovely however.

Mollygo Thu 24-Apr-25 18:37:12

Sorry for hay fever sufferers that are affected.
Mine is triggered by Laburnum-fortunately not as widespread as oilseed rape.

Scribbles lots of flax grown near me. I live in rural northern Lincolnshire and the rape isn't out yet round here.

BlueBelle Thu 24-Apr-25 22:12:11

Isn’t it Rapeseed not Oilseed rape ?

Absolutely, it smells vile. It’s also a virulent shade of yellow and very jarring on the eye. While the blue fields of my Essex childhood were beautiful. 😀

(I always thought those fields were flax)

Casdon Thu 24-Apr-25 22:18:19

I avoid it, because it affects my hayfever, it makes my eyes stream and makes me wheezy. I switch the aircon and blowers off in the car if I’m driving past fields. One plus though is that it’s easy to avoid as it’s so bright you can’t miss it.

BlueBelle Thu 24-Apr-25 22:20:56

I love the colour and seeing it so brightly shining amongst the greens of the countryside stands out so boldly

Taichinan Thu 24-Apr-25 22:31:59

I'm laughing at the different perceptions of colour and smell! I love the cheery yellow, and to me it smells lovely and fresh. Though I'm sure if I was a hay fever sufferer I'd hate it.

seadragon Thu 24-Apr-25 22:39:07

I was badly affected by rapeseed pollen when we lived surrounded by fields of the stuff. I remember DH looking from me sitting with wodges of toilet roll up both nostrils and streaming eyes to the TV where Miss World was being televised......We no longer watch it now of course..
