Midges

They seem to be on the rampage this spring as it's warmed up recently. I was in Barnard Castle and there was a blizzard of them near the river, and also loads of greenfly that were getting into your clothes. They're nowhere near as nasty as wasps, but I am itching quite a lot from midge bites and wonder if anyone else has been plagued by these little blighters.

Yes, they must have been breeding in a neighbour's pond, came in a swarm across the fence!

Do you have any standing water in or near your garden?

I only have a few in the garden as there are no ponds near me, but they were very active near the Tees today and people were saying the midges and greenfly have been a big issue as April was a lot warmer than last year.

I hate them. I'm a magnet for them (for any kind of wee biting beastie, actually!) and I react really badly to the bites. Haven't had any around here so far, but we're in Scotland.

Scottish friends recommended we use Avon’s Skin-so-Soft to ward off midges.

Yes, I've heard that's good.

We use Skin-so-Soft - as recommended by the local gamekeepers!

Midges love me . They cloud above my head and follow me . WHY ? I've been walking this evening by a river and know I shall start itchy stingy during the night . How do they get inside my trousers / leggings and bite my thighs? I have put Tiger balm on a few stings but after an hour or so the scratchy itch starts . The bites last for 4 days .

I wish I knew why they like my blood .
