I sort of see the parallels with Charlie Hebdo FriedGreenTomatoes. Charlie's mission is to polarise public opinion and to feed the debate about the freedom of expression.
It's been 10 years now, January 2015, since the attack at Charlie's offices, yet it has risen back again and still going strong. A bit like Monsieur Trump!

A reminder ..

Je suis Charlie" is a French phrase that translates to "I am Charlie". It gained widespread popularity as a slogan of solidarity following the 2015 terrorist attack on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. The phrase was used to express support for freedom of speech and press, and to show solidarity with the victims of the attack.

I thought the Charlie Hebdo cartoons were disgraceful, unbelievably puerile, provocative and not worth the outcome. Free speech I know, but with free speech should come some responsibility. Having said that, I think whilst Christians may often feel insulted in instances that may have equated to the insults dished out by Charlie Hebdo, they don't, and are expected not to kick off in quite the same way.

It's faintly embarassing somehow.

AGAA4 Sun 04-May-25 16:57:04

I'm not offended but many Catholics may be. It's just schoolchild humour that should be beneath the president of the US.

Luckygirl3 Sun 04-May-25 15:04:41

He hasn't got a clue has he? Where does he find the time to produce this rubbish?
I have no sympathy with catholicism ( grandfather raised in a catholic boys orphanage ... need I say more?) but do try to respect the feelings of others of a different mind.
How anyone can say he does nor have the classic psychotic symptom of delusions of grandeur I do not know ....

So do you think it’s acceptable for Trump, as president of the USA , to post a picture of himself as the Pope FGT2?

He’s joined in with a world-wide meme Casdon.
He didn’t START it or instigate it as some on here seem to think.

Whether or not it was a good idea or not - depends on (a) your sense of humour (b) how deep your hatred of Trump goes I suppose.

I've a sense of humour - this is not humorous.

Wyllow3 Sun 04-May-25 14:56:53

Respect has to be earnt

Casdon Sun 04-May-25 14:54:34

Posting a picture of yourself as the pope is the act of an immature idiot with zero self awareness, not of a president of the USA. Somebody who is the self styled leader of the free world? I like a joke as much as anybody, but this isn’t a joke at all. Why you defend him for this I cannot understand.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 04-May-25 14:50:45

It wasn’t ‘satire’ Wyllow it was disrespect showing its face.
(The baby blimp).
And that’s okay.
As this is.

Hi Countess ,
I'm really glad that you also feel strongly enough to begin a thread on the disgusting behaviour of Trump .
Mine is on News .

flowers smile thanks

Well I’m not religious so it didn’t offend me. Each to their own I can understand that. And for those who might be tempted to say “have respect for the office”…. well Sadiq Khan allowed the orange baby in a nappy balloon over London during Trump’s visit here, remember? 🤷‍♀️

I don't think Sadiq Khan is responsible for abusing people he doesn't like the look of?

Correct me please if I am wrong.

Wyllow3 Sun 04-May-25 14:17:06

I wrote 'is there no respect for other people's religions'.
Apparently not.
I found it offensive, equally the 'baby blimp' of Trump that Sadiq Khan allowed, although that was not mocking his religion.

The baby blimp was satire in the realm of "spitting image" territory - ie distorted features, greatly orange, et al.

But Trump represented himself as the Pope, as in a world religious leader. He's already claimed to be the chosen one of God, justifying all the appalling things he is saying and doing, I suppose this is just an extension.

‘Je suis Charlie’ anyone? 10 years ago now but still relevant surely!

Iam64 Sun 04-May-25 13:57:49

I’m capable of enjoying or being offended by more than one thing at once
I’m not Catholic, the pope did some positive things but covered up abuse by priests at the same time
For me the cover up outweighs the good
but I’m still offended not by ordinary folk and this meme but by the Potus behaving badly as ever

I am a humanist, but I know enough not to make fun of what for many people on this planet is fundamental to their way of life.

Utterly vulgar and showing such ignorance - made 1000 times worse because he is the leader of a country which should know better.

I’m an atheist and I agree. Whilst I may not believe in God, I do not poke fun at others beliefs. It just shows how ill suited he is to be POTUS. What a vile person!

Trump joined in with this viral meme.
He didn’t start it. It’s ’doing the rounds’.
Perhaps he ought not to have considering his position as POTUS. Bad judgement but other than that I’m not offended.

What does offend me are some of the practices enforced by religious groups. Misogyny on steroids.

I won’t go into them on this thread but we all know who they are.

Yes, just look what is happening in the USA - certainly misogyny on steroids.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 04-May-25 13:44:02

I agree with you Baggs on this.
‘Trump is BAD … whatever he does’ bandwagon.

And you could see the funny side too escaped of my sister’s dog’s face under the mitre!

It’s a meme doing the rounds (while there’s no Pope).
“I could be a great Pope”.
I got one the day before yesterday - it was my sister’s dog wearing the mitre and vestments.

That's funny!
A bit like Larry the Cat was portrayed as the next PM.

Just so.

The outpourings of outrage are really quite amusing, especially as Trump can't do anything without outraging half the world. I think people just like being outraged and expressing it.

escaped Sun 04-May-25 13:39:58

Personally I wouldn't choose to see Trump in religious attire. It's not a good look.
